S of 'v ,WML , Q, G3 was From the calendar of school events and activities too numerous to list, two have been selected as worthy of note. Though different in nature, both are significant in the life of the school. They are the change in school bound- aries and the approval of a school philosophy or creed. Once again our school district has contracted in size. Heretofore, the eastern boundary was Lake Michigan and the state line, now it is Lake Michi- gan and the Calumet River. The new Washington School occasioned che change. Regretfully Bowen accepts the loss of the East Side and Hegewisch communities. Students from these sections have always been a valuable asset in school activities. Beginning freshman students enrolled in the new school last February. In September, freshman and sophomore students currently attending Bowen and residing in these areas will be transferred. Our best wishes accom- pany their transfer to the modern, beautiful community school. Elsewhere in this Annual is printed the Bowen High School Creed. Dur- ing the year a faculty committee considered and approved the school philo- sophy or creed. Simply defined, a philosophy is a statement of belief. In this instance, it is what the faculty believes the educational program of the school should do for the students who participate in it. The philosophy serves as a measuring stick for evaluating the effectiveness of the educational program and as a reference frame for its revision. Never static, the school philosophy or creed responds to changes in the general aims of education resulting from progress in social, political, and economic living. fa- aiceaaaf ELI j. GOLDBERG EDYTHE M. LYNCH Assistant Principal Acting Assistant Principal To The Graduates With graduation, your dream of four years will have come to fruition. You, like hundreds before you, will join the company of those who have graduated from Bowen, a high school rich in tradition and one that has made an honored place for itself in the South Chicago Community. This book is the pictured record of your final year at Bowen. Today the faces of your friends and teachers are etched clearly in your mind's eye, but as the days grow into years, those mental images will become dimmer and dimmer as new people and experiences crowd into your lives. It is then that this book will become your treasure trove. Guard it well. May the ambitions and dreams that you have nurtured while here become a reality! May success and happiness be the larger share of your lives! But if failures should come, as they sometimes will, do not let them dim your spirits. Instead, let them be learning experiences. Then move on to better things with renewed effort and confidence. Remember that success does not come easily. It must be earned. If your high school days have stimulated, even to a small degree, your love of learning, your days at Bowen will have been well spent. May learning continue to be a part of your lives, and then may you, like Tennyson's Ulysses, Follow knowledge like a sinking siar, Beyond the utmost bound of bnfnan ilnozzgbff' eiriretnft g Twelve Ri '54 if YEAR ADVISORS MARIE A wh 'HTSZN g.:.- W 'Q L ' if' I ,,.,, dag JAMES CLARK Third-Year Aeiviyer M PUDER Flu!-Y em' Adwxor ELIYABETH MCKINSTRY 5ec0ml-Y ear Adwfer GENEVRA R. Page Fifty-six Acceptance into the society represents the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a student in our school. In the past year 68 members were inducted into the National Honor Society. Parents and friends are invited to the in- duction ceremony which is preceded by a luncheon for the officers and guests and followed by a tea given by the Senior Girls' Council for the members and their parents. Another highlight of the induction program is the address given to the members by a distin- guished guest speaker. Two such speakers this year were: Dean William E. So far, we have written an entirely new Constitution, approved and passed it. We have had a school-wide election of officers in which cam- paigning was allowed and officers elected from the four persons running for each office. Also, many assemblies have been held and conducted. The 1B Freshie Assembly is becoming a standard feature on Orientation Day. Bookcovers, in Bowen's colors, are sold each semester, and a movie is shown to the active members of the Student Council. Page Fifiy-seven THE HONOR CLUB SENIORS First row: S. Herbstmcn, D. All parliamentary procedure as well as the enter- tainment is conducted in French. Regular meetings feature group participation in games and singing. Films or slides of France are projectedg recordings are playedg reports are given. At the end of the semester the Cercle usually gives a comedy to which are invited other language students. One of the high points of the year is the Christmas party which the sponsor gives. At the time the program chairman and committee outdo themselves in the originality of their entertain- ment. Probably one reason for the student participation is the rule that when asked to perform a member must repeat the motto: Je serais enchante!
