LARSON INfAPPRECIHTION The faculty and student body were sorry to learn last fall that Mr. Hearne was leaving Bowen for Gage Park High School. Mr. Hearne had been at Bowen for fourteen years and during that time had instituted many improvements at our school. All Bowenites hope that he is as well-loved at Gage Park as he was at Bowen. Mr. Larsen was an instructor in Art and Mechanical Drawing for many years. He was also one l was lil lil , AMB 1. W ly of the sponsors of the january Class and served as Faculty Marshal at the mid-year commencement exer- cises. Mrs. Ethel Selzer has served Bowen well as Attendance Officer. She was ever sympathetic with the problems of the students with who she dealt and impressed them with her willingness to help them as a friend. General Hillon presenls lhe Chamber of Commerce plaque lo Mr. Heurne os Ihe General Superinlendenl of Schools, Dr. Willis, looks on. Page Five Dr. Romberg speaks at the Football Banquet. To The Graduates of 1955 It is a happy circumstance that the yearbook to which I make my first contribution has as its theme The Student Bodyf, It is the object of the endeavors of the faculty and principal, in fact, the main reason for our being at Bowen High School. Moreover the theme is an appropriate one for the educational program in general. Simply expressed, education is but the interaction of students with the curriculum or activities provided for their complete social, moral, emotional, and intellectual development. With an additional vital factor, the teachers, the three constitute the heart of any school. Together they inject life and all its adventures into what otherwise would be a pile of bricks, stone, and mortar. Replete with pictures, the pages which follow unfold a comprehensive, modern, functional program 4. Page Six of regular and extra-class activities in operation. The former comprise the basic, prescribed subjects, while the latter are selective, carry no credit, and permit exploitation of individual interests. For every student, whether he has an interest in or a bent for music, athletics, science, or dramatics, there is a regular or extra-class activity to welcome his participation. Largely responsible for the successful program of activities is the cooperation of students, parents, busi- ness and industrial leaders, and faculty. The wholesome atmosphere is productive of superior educational achievement and affords a wellspring of opportunities for further progress. To have a part in this thriving, pulsating community of youth is indeed a privilege and honor of which, it is my earnest hope, the years ahead will prove me worthy. OUR PRINCIPHL DR. HILDEGARDE M. ROMBERG To the Classes of 195 : This book is your memento of the happy and active years you have spent at Bowen. Its pages, in the the years to come, will awaken in your memory the amusing incidents, the interesting events, the formal education to which you subscribed, and the close association you had with your fellow students and teachers. In the belief that in our society the schools con- tribute in no small measure to the total development Page High! MR. ELI J. GOLDBERG Assisfanl Principal of the person, it is our trust that you, too, have ref ceived an investment in ideals, hopes, and thoughts concerning the welfare of others, inspirations, apprecia- tions, and the wonders and mysteries of the earth. That has been our taskg you have been the instrument through which it has been unfolded. May you, through- out your wallcs in life, transmit to the generation to come an increased devotion to those fine and worthy principles that are now yours. ff MISS FRANCES CRAVEN MISS EDYTHE M. We had trouble finding rooms and remembering our locker Got lost around the building 'and went up,' the udownf, Bowen soon became familiar, all corners and nooks, 'Twasn't long before we carried Algebra and Science books. After six months we were Freshmen, We took it out on the Freshies we had been. We got used to riding buses and paying bus fares, In Biology hunted bugs, in Geometry studied squares. Every five weeks we would pray for no Dis, And envy the students who would get all E's. In our third year we joined clubs, went to games, And studied hard to fulfill all our aims. In History, Physics, and English we did our best, And, like everybody else hated the word test . Finally we were Seniors, we had reached the topg So many things we had learned-including the Bunny Hop! Election of our officers saw President as Tomg Soon after that, came the big night- Our Prom . Tuxedos and formals were the talk of the school, If I were only a Senior, we could hear the Freshies drool. We enjoyed the summers and each holiday, It was so grand to go to school in the U.S.A. Dr. Romberg took over our school in September, Mr. Hearne was someone we shall always remember. In the remaining days of each week, Into our future we would try to peek. We could hardly believe graduation's almost here, Thinking of this made us sort of shed a tear. And so the Class of january 55 sadly said good-bye, To a wonderful four years we had had at Bowen High. As freshies we learned many important facts. Lockers could be purchased with steam heat and mousetraps, elevator passes were scarce. After we discovered the truth, we thought the seniors were pretty mean, but someone had to initiate us. As time progressed and we became sopho- mores and juniors, we met new friends and started to take part in many of the school activi- ties. These years brought hard work for those striving to become members of the National Honor Society. Before we knew it, our senior year had arrived, starting a round of activities. Our first escapade was Senior Sloppy Day. It was our contribution to a wonderful April Fools Day, however we made up for it by having Senior Dress Up Day, on April 20th. That was the day we were measured for caps and gowns. Perhaps the most memorable day in our lives was the Senior prom, held on June 3rd, at the Edgewater Beach Hotel. We danced to the unfor- gettable tune, Stairway to the Stars , the theme of our prom. Graduation day finally arrived and as we walked down the aisle to the strains of the Recessional, carrying with us the knowledge we had acquired at Bowen, we entered the world, each one going to his chosen walk of life. Senior Class Play A few of the senior girls came up with a fine idea of having a senior class play. Along with Scholarship, high ideals of Character, Leadership, and Service must be upheld. These four important qualities are the basis for membership, and no honor conferred by the school excels that repre- sented by the National Honor Society. There were 46 members in the society during the current year. One of the highlights of the induction is that each mother of the inductee is presented with a rose. The Council is comprised of fourth year girls. One of the services which the Senior Girls Council Page Fifly-fight renders is to serve at the National Honor Tea. The Council made bows which were sold on Bow Day and, as usual, the sale proved to be very profitable. Under the capable direction of Miss Selzer they have participated in many school activities. In October they sponsored a clean-up slogan con- test to which there was great response. In February, posters featuring the senior class officers were displayed around school as their endorsement of the clean-up drive. April was a great month for the committee. They sponsored a Clean up the halls contest which the sophomore class won. The latter were awarded, for their efforts, the privilege of seeing the senior class play. A tag day was next on the agenda. On each tag appeared one of several slogans, the favorite of which was 'Tm a clean-up kid. The next enterprise was that of a booklet which contained a pledge, to be signed by each student, reading, A cleaner, brighter Bowen is our goalf' Every semester the committee decorates the show case on the first floor. The display this semester was especially attractive and was centered around catchy slogans. Attendance Office Every morning students rush into the Attendance Office just before their classes begin, to get reinstate' ments and later in the day more students come in for tardy slips. Up until the last semester, Miss Durkin who did a very fine job was in charge of the Attendance Office. In February the responsibilities were lifted from her shoulders to those of Mr. Lynch. The office is run very efficiently under his expert supervision. Each period four or five students donate their services by preparing reinstatements, putting them in order, filing, keeping records of cuts and early dis- missals, keeping duplicate attendance records of fresh- men and sophomores, preparing telephone calls for students who have to be contacted, and sending out attendance letters. Everything is kept in systematic order so that any necessary information is available at the moment it is needed. Mrs. Selzer, who was Attendance Officer for sev- eral years, retired in February. Mrs. Casper has taken over the position. Everyone working in the Attendance Office en- joys his work very much because he knows how im- portant it is to the school. The smooth functioning of the Attendance Office is just one more example of the results obtained by faculty-student cooperation. Is this right? At your service! The Boilermakers, headed by Coach Lou Wasserman, enjoyed considerable success during the 1954 season as they chalked up five wins and one loss against league foes. But this season Coach Wasserman was faced with a tremendous tlsk of rebuilding. Bowen opened up the season by losing a close 7-6 decision to Parker, Parker scored and kicked the P.A.T. in the final minute of play. Du Sable's Panthers proved to be a more rugged foe as they drubbed our boys 25-O. After bowing to Parker and DuSable the Boilermakers elxed out a scoreless tie with Harper. Bowen uned its first South Central Blue division vic- tory by defeating Hyde Park 26-7. The Boiler- makers led throughout the game. Touchdowns vsere scored by Tom Johnson, Jack Pettigrew, lack Micheletto and Ed Winkler. Our boys showed a lot of heart in the Englewood game. Trtiling l9-6 at half time, they rallied for two touchdowns, tying the game on a 5-yard TD plunge by fullback Jack Micheletto in the final quirter. Bill Gram and Al Massucci also scored for Bowen. Bowen concluded its season by beat- ing Farragut 18-6. Bowen led early in the first quarter when Micheletto, aided by splendid live play, pushed across for the touchdown. Tom Iohnson and Bill Gram tallied the final touch- downs for the Boilermakers. The lettermen re- turning from last year were Jack Micheletto, and Jaird Chasten. Prczcfice Session. Basketball Witli the graduation of the top men of the 1953-54 championship team, Bowenites looked for a dismal year in 55. The Boilermakers how- ever would not concede under the expert guidance of Coach Pritikin. They amassed a winning record of IO-8. Lack of height and experience, and a continuous plague of injuries proved too much for the boys in their bid for a city play-off berth. The Boilermakers boasted of one of the strongest scoring front lines in Chicago with forwards Paul Page Ninciy-four Kantzler, Bill Rozich and center Al O'Brien each scoring over lOO points in city league competi- tion. The back court tasks of the Boilermakers were assigned to guards jim Edwards and John Crotty. After the mid-season graduation of Ed- wards, Bob Zeisel, assumed the position. Reserves who saw much action were Jack Micheletto, Leroy Boyer, and Sal Barba. When young boys like these can be put under the tutoring of such a fine coach as Mr. Ptitikin for four years it is inevitable that by the time they are seniors they will have been molded into a power in the city basketball lague. Sophomores on the team who can be looked for on next year's varsity squad are P. Lakich, D.s'Brokop, M. Ran- dall, R. Belazi, and S. Ivy.
