C0 the graduates af I9 2 During your four years of high school you have studied many factors which have contrib- uted to good citizenship. Now that you are about to enter a wider field in which to practice good citizenship, it is well to focus your attention on some of the more salient aspects of this important phase of living,-human relations. The basis, the indispensable condition for successful human relations, is recognition of the dignity and worthwhileness of every human being. This recognition must have its roots deep in a spiritual soil. There must be a real study and understanding of the expression all men are created equal. From these thoughts comes the realization that every human being is of more worth than the entire physical universe. With these ideas as a starting point the road ahead seems more clear-human values be- come evident-action based on friendship ensues. The result is a community of cooperative persons striving for the common good of all. May each one of you, then, do his share in bringing about this much desired outcome. Sincerely, v I 5 n 9 1 ,T AA, 4, L CW pf Our Zfrinczpnl MR. WILLIAM P. HEARNE Seven U16 Assistant Priuczyfal MR ELI J. GOLDBERG The theme of your yearbook for 1952 is Program and Schedules in Our School Life. Not unlike such a theme for school life is also one for post-high school life and living, for that is the great venture upon which you are now embarking. This will prove to be a journey of vast and divergent avenues. For some of you, a program for the foreseeable future is well planned: further schooling, employment C travel and yes, marriage, tooj. For others, and probably just a few, only a mixture of thoughts and ideas without any fixed goals or definite plans for the present. However, as the years unfold those of you who have a program of life will gradually attain that for which you have plannedg and those whose programs have not as yet been formulated- will gradually develop thoughts and actions for the future, You will discover, as you travel this program of life and living, that problems will arise and answers must be given. Take these problems as a matter of course, 'and use your experiences, education and wisdom to formulate answers that will provide you with an abundance of contentment for your program through life and living. 57 Izzqhz Che Adminisfrafars RUTH V. Meetings are held about twice a month. At these meetings, the members often hear speakers on dif- ferent phases of photography, such as filters, lens speeds, lenses, color photography, and dark room techni- que. However, the various subjects are made easy enough to understand, so that all members, whether ad- vanced camera enthusiasts or merely beginners, can profit from the talks. Many times the members them- selves speak to the rest of the group on a certain topic in which they are interested. The highlight of this past year was the sponsoring a schoolwide photo contest. This contest inspired the young photographers to out-do themselves in taking good pictures, which in itself is far more important than the material gain. But all is not business-the club also takes field trips to points of interest in the Chicago area, and the members spend half a day or so snapping pictures. Shutterbugs is a fairly new club, having been founded in 1946 by Mr. William H. Collins, the former assistant principal. Mr. Arthur Larsen, an art teacher, very ably took over the job as sponsor upon Mr. Collins, retirement. Twenty- four Cla' Visual Saucafiaa glllb The Visual Education Club is ora ganized to show movies for classes throughout the school. Mr. Hurd, the sponsor, has helped shape our club since he replaced Mr. Kelly this semester. With our fleet of smooth running projectors and up-to-date films, the crew shows over 2500 movies per year. Membership in the club offers good experience for any- one who likes projectors and movies. Mr. Kelly, R. Lykins, D. Srepansky, L. Martin, T. Bernat, J.Brub:1ker. These girls and boys work together to create a skit and then display their talents in it. This play is held on Columbus Day and also on Pan-American Day. At this time the Club demonstrates to the students and faculty of Bowen High the real meaning of these days. The members not only enjoy themselves in this undertaking, but take great satisfaction in knowing that they put across to others the principles involved in these great days. During the Frolics of 1952, the Pan-American Club proudly presented a South-American skit with joe Garcia and Bill Dawson taking the parts of Dean Martin and jerry Lewis as the main characters. Carmen Miranda, the Beautiful Dancing Girls and the Singing Waitresses were a few of the many acts that were represented. Under the instruc- tion of Mr. Brandenburg, the' boys learn many important items about automobiles. Some of the things that they are taught are how the ignition system operates and what makes automatic trans- mission work. The boys also have access to other fine equipment which they may operate. The Chicago Board of Education has a build- ing budget in which a bill has been put through providing Bowen with a new auto shop. This shop will replace the one now standing in the school yard. The new shop will be furnished with all the latest equipment. Bowen hopes to have this new shop before 1955. Wayne Ober working on o carburetor. Robert Pacitti, Raul Carillo check a generator. We owe them and their leader, Mr. H. H. Brandenberg, many thanks for the fine Work they have done and are doing. Forty-six The Chess and Checker Club. Ure Hhess uru! Glzeckcr Klub Entering into league competition for the first time since its birth, the Bowen Chess and Checker Team gained much experience by their efforts. Playing a schedule of 12 checker games in the fall semes- ter, the checker team won 2 and lost 9 with 1 tie. Th's record was noticed by many chess and checker- minded underclassmen who apparently decided they would try to improve the team. Although three of the top chess players graduated in January, the beginning of the new chess season, they were replaced by skilled underclassmen who, after accepting a formal challenge, defeated the Blue Island Chess Club by a score of eight to two in each of two matches. Sixiy glfdfbllff The most successful football season in five years, was climaxed with the largest, and finest banquet in Boilermaker history. The principal speaker for the affair was Ray Eliot, genial mentor of the Rose-Bowl Cham- pions, the Fighting Illini, from the Univer- sity of Illinois. The banquet is an annual event spon- sored by the Bowen High Council to honor the people responsible for the success of the team. Some two hundred guests, parents, and interested citizens of the community were on hand to pay tribute to our gridders. The highlight of the entire evening was the presentation of awards to the athletes The graduating seniors who received minia- ture footballs for their service were: Carl Lar- son, Rodney Morris, Eli Grba, Harold Sanford, Charles Bland, James Stewert, Dean Pearson, James DeBolt, jack Massucci, and Robert Kelly. Those who received letters and are re- turning to next year's squad are: Fred Ban, john Galich, Ronald Moreland, Gordon Beau- doin, Paul Haller, Tom Wozniak, joe Skubicz, Andy jeanor, Ray Leyerle, Roger Ulaskas, Stanley Tinsley, Frank Pickett, Ron Bokowy, Ronald Mizwicki, Jerome Wyrobek, Paul Tanzillo, Ronald Walley, and Ronald Stone. This surge kept the Boilermakers in contention for a play-off berth until the final game, a 52-51 loss to Morgan Park. Jim Chengary, sharp shooting center, led the team in scoring followed closely by his brother, John, Eli Grba, and Gordon Beaudoin. Rick Herndobler, plagued by an ankle injury early in the season, turned in a creditable job at guard post along with Captain john Chengary. Gordon Beaudoin and Eli Grba, at forwards contributed several hot streaks in the winning spree the Boilermakers enjoyed. jim Chengary's rebound ability and scoring punch made the tangy sophomore an asset. With jim Chengary, Beaudoin, Ron Moreland, Wayne McGee and Glen Tews, all lanky candidates for the center post, returning prospects for a winning team next year look very bright. The Boilermakers racked up six consecutive games before meeting C.V.S. CCity Championsj and gave the Cavaliers their best game of the year. The next game brought the Bowenites another loss at the hands of the Fenger Five, striving for the play-offs. Victories over Carver and Morgan Park closed the regular season play. Entering the playoffs with an 8-2 record, Bowen engaged Lindblom of the Central Section and won a real thriller 53-52. Next was Wendell Phillips, first place team in the Central Section. Playing on the Phillip's home floor, before a partisan crowd, the Boilermakers were unable to play consistantly good basketball and were defeated 42-40. This ended the season for the Juniors who had closed a very successful year with a total record of 12-4. The Three Strikes and a Blown, con- sisting of Angelo Strazzante, Glenn Bingman, Paul Polovina and Dave Houser, gave Stearman and his boys a run for their money by finishing only one game behind. Since only nine boys are graduating, next year will be even better than this one. This year the Bowen Bowlers went downtown to engage in the City Prep Pin Crown Championship. Those who bowled were Harold Stearman, Frank Niekrasz, Hank Knerr, john Loumbas, and Angelo Strazzante. . Sixty-jwe 1952 Kascbul! Firsi Row: E. Grba, D. Barber, T. Galovich, R. Jingling, N. Starting from scratch at the first fall baseball practice in Bowen's history, Coach Harry Pritikin set out to make a team that would equal the 1951 squad, which was runner-up for city championship laurels. With All-City hurler Eli Grba and flashy fielding outfielder Nick Popravak to build around and returning lettermen Chengary, Napierkowski, and Herndobler, who were used mainly in utility roles last season, things did not look quite so dark. , Chip Jahnke, Ron Moreland, and Wayne McGee returned to bolster the pitching staff, and Bob jolly and Dick Jingling returned to the infield. The starting infield consisted of Herndobler, Gorence, jolly and Chengary, while Napierkowski, Popravak and Peterlin patrolled the pastures. In combining veterans and rookies, Coach Pritikin has created another fine diamond Crew. Sixty -sir 1952 Hassan!! 5 Since taking over the duties of Baseball mentor last year, Coach Harry Pritikin has led his teams through two very successful seasons. Last year his team went to the city finals in Comiskey Park, before falling before the Cavaliers from Chicago Vocational. Mr. Pritikin, besides building championship baseball teams, is also the basketball coach, and has tutored top-flight hoopsters. His junior teams for the past two years have gained city playoff berths, and he has built up the senior squad from scratch into a respected quintet. To prove his ability as a coach, 5 of last year's starting 9 are in college on scholarships, and 1 is playing professional ball in the Brooklyn Dodger farm chain. Some record! Coach Harry H.
