Collins Dear Graduates of 1951: Most of you realize that your four years of high school have sped by rather rapidly, and that you are starting on a new phase: further schooling, business, or military service. You have been told that you are important because you are a human being and all that this includes. You are way above the animal kingdom and a little below the angels. For this reason each one of you is of more importance that the entire physical universe. The onl true basis of freedom rests on the fact that we are free to do the thin we ou ht to do. To be n y 4 n . . g g u faithful to your duties to God and to your Country is the primary end of education. The extent to which ou achieve this will be the true measure of 'our success. This is learnin how to live. Y 5 8 It is also important to learn how to make a living. Both aims can be accomplished but if the second is sought to the exclusion of the first, then secondary values usurp the place of primary values. In other words, our sense of values has been destroyed. Many sound thinkers today give this loss of putting first things first as the basic cause for the current ills of society. My advice, then, to each of you, is to continue to search for real values, to put first things first, to know what democracy means, and thus to prepare yourself to be active citizens in this grand land. Sincerely yours, Eight MR. HEARNE AT HIS DESK if 'A h ,' . 'Q xx -Q4 A X ix, - mv nf ' , gf Nine M ' - ' Wi 'UWf 'ff'.v 1 f F ':i!Y!V: i '1'- ! 'r Our New Assistant Principal Mr. Eli J. Goldberg In the years to come, on some occasional quiet evening, as you turn the pages of this book and recall the many incidents and activities of high school, you will relive the glorious and carefree high school days of your youth. The pictures and words of this annual will bring back with keen and knowing interest your former associates, favorite club, the teams on which you played, and perhaps a former charmer of the heart. You will see, also, through your powers of memory, the classroom setting, the little variations in your former teachers' mannerisms, and if you are with former classmates, you will discuss all the pet peeves which were so involved in your educational routine. Preserve this yearbook of 1951 for the remainder of your life, for it is the only recorded instrument through which you may continue to vividly retain the years you spent at Bowen. May your days ahead prove to be as fruitful, invigorating and thought-provoking as the time you spent at Bowen, and may they also be happy and prosperous ones as you journey through life. W! The representatives are elected by members of their divisions or organizations with the approval of the division teacher or sponsor. At the meetings, the Student Board discusses the various problems of the school such as Lunch Room conditions in relationship to students, cleanli- ness throughout the building and the surrounding grounds, and anything else that comes to the atten- tion of the board and must be accomplished by the students themselves. The Student Board also takes care of all collections conducted throughout the year. Among them are the Thanksgiving Fund, Memorial Day Flower Fund, the March of Dimes, Easter Seals and the Red Cross. These collections are carried out through the division representatives. Mr. Eli Goldberg was the faculty sponsor of the Student Board during the fall semester of 1950, and Miss Barlow is at present the sponsor of this organization. We all know that we can count on these boys to make the best of a pro- gram, whatever it may be, and once it has been Jim Wilen and Richard Zeh working behind the scenes. put into their hands, we begin to feel assured of its success. We are not disappointed when, later, we see the expression of our thought cross the foot- lights to inspire, amuse, or instruct, the audience is hardly aware of the timing, the integration, the effect, achieved by their management. The stage crew takes care of flood lights, spot lights, foot lights, house lights, special effects, micro- phones, sound controls, and flowers. They work under the leadership of Mr. H. Brandenberg. It strives to create an interest in photography and gives its members an opportunity to discuss problems and exchange ideas concerning picture taking. They have gone on field trips to points of interest and have enjoyed lectures on filters, lenses, film, color film, developing, good pictures, and different cameras. The lectures are given by guest speakers and by club members. Movies, tours and demonstrations are also a part of the activities of the Shutterbugs. Topics such as composition, lenses and lights are featured at meetings along with analyzing prints and dark room technique. The club also sponsors photo contests among its members. Sept.-Jan. Besides showing films. the equipment must be moved to the various rooms where needed and the machines must be oiled and kept in running condition. All of these jobs were done well and with enthusiasm by the mem- bers during this past year. The high point of the year's activities is the annual banquet when the members get together for a dinner and a general good time. The Visual Education Club trains its members to operate and care for the projectors. New members therefore do not need to know how to operate pro- jectors. and the most important requirement for membership is a desire to be of important service to the school. Mrs. Oleson, Office Workers Render Valuable Services The members of this most useful of organiza- tions have found a way to render service to our school and to widen their own experience at the same time. They assist the secretaries in carrying on the many activities centered in the Main Office. Messages are dispatched, supplies delivered, mail distributed. The daily bulletin is mimeographed. Faculty members often avail themselves of the ser- vices of this trained group, knowing that all com- missions will be accomplished with dispatch. Strangers entering Bowen on business are di- rected to the office of the particular counselor or administrator whom they are to see. Visitors are conducted through the building. The student office personnel thus becomes familiar with the administration of our school with its procedure similar to those in business offices. This type of activity helps in developing depend- ability, promptness and the ability to follow direc- tions. Office service is especially interesting to lower classmen, affording them an opportunity of meeting the different members of the faculty, the student body and becoming familiar with the different parts of the school. They present the National Honor Society pin to each member, to mention but two of their contribu- tions to our schoolis activities. The worth-while meetings, the faculty teas, the Fathers Night program all attest the seriousness of purpose and enthusiasm of our P.T.A. headed this year by Mr. Kosanke. All My Classes Are Open Bowen has every right to be proud of her regis- tration department because of its efficiency and be- cause the students themselves choose the subjects they want, the time they want them and their in- structors as well. It is not, however, something that just hap- pensf' Many hours of hard work are put into the preparation of a master program, issuing of election cards, program cards, registration slips, and the like. The master program is an immense project in itself. It lists each possible subject, the class number, room number, teacher and the period when it is offered. There is a choice of teachers for a certain subject at a designated period. An interesting fact behind the master program as we see it is that the schedule not only gives the teachers five class periods a day but usually gives them three periods that will not interfere with any sponsorship of clubs, counselling or anything else that requires a certain period or can be accomplished best at a given time. This is just one of the extra courtesies that are taken into consideration when the master program is made out. It is the duty of the assistant principal to compile this master program. In the past it has been done by Mr. William I-I. Collins but was taken over this February by Mr. Eli J. Goldberg upon Mr. Collins' retirement as Assistant Principal of Bowen High School. Both are to be commended for their excel- lent work in preparing, for the students conf venience, this guide to aid them in deciding upon a suitable program for each semester as it presents itself. Also, the work of the faculty students who help with registration should be ac- knowledged. The students take care of all of the filing of the election cards and the cards used by the class teachers for attendance the first two weeks of each semester, put programs in order and go over all registration material turned in by students to see that they are complete and satisfactory. The teachers under Miss Shea, Miss Brennan, Miss Fogelson, Miss McKinstry, Miss Kinsey and Miss Puder, have checked all programs as they were made out by the students to see that they register for the required courses when needed, the right lunch period for their grade in school, and to see that the program cor- responds with their electives as well as the master program. They perform a service that is seldom recognized but constantly appreciated by all the Bowenites. None of this, however would be possible if it were not for Mr. Fisher and the Print Shop who print all registration material for every student at Bowen, again serving the school in their same silent way. members and Thirty-five f .Q ,Q :QL . Bowen High School offers an extensive course in shop work for boys interested in doing things with their hands in a mechanical or creative way. Industrial Arts. an introductory course, helps them to decide which field they wish to study and should be taken in the freshman year. It offers work in five different units: housing, graphic arts, cer- amics, electricity, and metal. The students take up clay modeling, making things with glass, wood and metal. making tools, and some do work in electricity and basic printing. These boys, under the direction of Mr. O'Hare, receive a well-rounded background for shopwork. When they have chosen the phase of shopwork that they find most interesting, the students have the opportunity of studying and developing more skill in that line. For example, if printing is chosen, they can go on to the print shop and learn the basic printing techniques and advanced printing. The boys cover all work on platen and cylinder presses. The print shop, with Mr. Fisher, as instructor gives in- valuable service to the school by printing the school paper, the Bowen Arrow, various programs for all occasionsg tickets for dances and other functions where admission is chargedg all registration material and other printed materials needed at school. Another field for boys is auto shop. The ob- jective here is to inform them of the construction of the automobile to make better potential owners and drivers of cars in addition to auto mechanics. These students study parts, carburetors and car- buretion, ignition work, and equipment and have access to two i951 Pontiac 6-cylinder engines, one Pontiac chassis. and two jeep engines. The Board is composed of a representative from each of the JB divisions and the officers are chosen from the same class. Together they plan and carry out the various projects of the Council. The bows sold on Bow Day are made at a big party attended by all the members who gather in the Social Room during the final periods of the day. The funds thus raised are used to defray the ex- penses of the tea given following the National Honor Society Induction to honor the students newly initiated into that organization, their parents and members of the faculty. It pro- vides the students with all the latest news of the school and community. This year the Arrow received the International Honor Rating of the Quill and Scroll for the third consecutive year. The Bowen Arrow Staff is also a socially active organization. Each year they plan an outing at the Dunes besides holiday parties and the Scholastic Press Guild Luncheon which was attended by six staff members this year. It is possible to receive two awards through work on the Bowen Arrow. The first is a letter B which can be earned by writing a designated num- ber of printed inches and being generally reliable and industrious while doing Arrow service. The stu- dent must also maintain at least a G average in all major subjects. If a student on the staff is in the upper third of his class. and does excellent work in writing in addition to being recommended by the adviser and approved by the Executive Secretary of the Council, he may receive a Quill and Scroll pin in his senior year. The publication of the Arrow is only half of the story behind the scenes. There are also division representatives who take care of sales and distribu- tion of the paper. Typirt The Book of the Year Another Bowenite has come off the press! It is a product of much team work and cooperation on the part of every member of the February and June Bowenite staffs. Wtirk began early in Sept. l950 when a theme was chosen, a cover decided upon and general or- ganization of the book took place. It was established that Bowen's beautiful campus would be employed as a theme for the entire Bowenite and that this would be especially evident on the double page spread introducing each section. The February staff also scheduled picture taking for most of the activi- ties featured in the Bowenite. Then the June staff stepped in and carried on where they left off. Identification of the graduates was completed. Under the direction of Norman Wilson. editor-in-chief. and Francis Szromba, art editor. layouts were planned and actual mounting of pictures got under way. Witli the completion of this extensive task the attention was focussed on typed material and the dummy. Following that came the reading of galley and page proofs which finished the compository work of the Bowenite Staff and put it into the hands of the printers and binders. It took a lot of hard work, much of it being during after school hours, but it was truly worth while in view of the fact that something has been added to enrich Bowen High School and carry on the tradition of a year book put out entirely by the students. Lois Cornwell and Helen Guzman organize bulletin board. Ed Fischer, Joretta Boscardin and Ken Mendelson organize Shirley Richards washes our mascot. Rose Tomasich and Dorothy Wigsmoen type out copy. Herbie Lightfoot and Gordon Frank check over accounts. Mrs, Robinson and Ernest Koehler set dead-lines. gloss prints. John Royes and Eunice Siemanowska look at calendar for dead-line dates. Bob Gotovac works at lay-outs. Geraldine Baumann turns deposit ticket over to Mrs. Daly. DIVISIONS Fifteen minutes out of each high school day at Bowen are devoted to a division period. Here, students come every day and meet with their divi- sion teachers. Attendance for the day is taken, col- lections taken for various funds, voting carried out, and the daily bulletin is read. It is the duty of all division teachers to read the bulletin and the duty of every student to listen. If a teacher or club sponsor wishes to relay a message to all students at school or to a small num- ber of them, a notice in the bulletin is the most cer- tain way of getting the message through. There is also a section in the bulletin not read to the students but rather. is used only by the teachers. A division teacher keeps all high school records of every student in his division. He also serves as a counsellor to his students. The number in each division varies but usually is about 20 to 30 in membership. A pupil has thc same division teacher for three years or until his senior year when he is transferred to a senior division which meets either in the Auditorium or the Little Theater. An exception to this is the Band and Orches- zra. Here Mrs. Caldwell has 100 students in her division. all of whom are members of either the band or the orchestra or both. Pupils remain in this division for as long as they are members of the organizations. Division period at Bowen is not only a neces- sary part of school life. but is also an enjoyable and interesting time when we meet people we know and learn the latest news of the school and of the stu- dents and teachers here. Bowen Iron Men Win Four, Lose Three Bowenites were stunned this year when their football team broke a two-year 15 game losing streak with a 15-6 victory over South Shore. After this practice game victory, our much improved squad battled it's way out of the South Section cellar, winning three of its six league games. Coach Lou Wassermzin began rebuilding our team last year when he re-organized Bowen's frosh- soph team. The 1950 season began to show the value of frosh-soph training. In future years, this team will prove to be a reserve of power where varsity material will be developed. Assistant Coach George Podemski aided in training these boys. The ten lettermen that returned this year were: Louis Mau, Ralph Zachary, Paul Haller, Bill Ro- mans, im Stewart, Ca t. E. Lowery, Jack Massucci J P , Len Zabroski, Bob Dinkelman, and Charles Bland.
