Bwoifaw liao A s s -' o feel rather close to all of you. I have learned much in these four years, and c nlident that you also have progressed. I ha e n many examples of excellent citizenship in your service to the school, your c ration among yourselves in the varied doings of our numerous clubs and organi ns, in your unstinted support of school activities and in your many endeavors to ta advantage of all the opportunities offered to you. Now that you are leaving us, I would like you to ponder seriously what I consider a major objective of all education and that is living together in cooperation and peace. Remember that education is a life time undertaking. Because of this I urge you to con- tinue your participation in civic affairs, as you have done in school affairs. In this way you will exert an influence among your associates for better living, rather than per- mitting yourselves to follow poor examples. Your high school days have been during the war years. Now we can see hopes of the end of hostilities in the near future. You can feel justly proud in your support of all drives. Continue these same efforts to obtain and maintain a just peace and you will have done your share as a citizen. In closing, remember we can still be of service to you and you can be of service to us. I trust your most cherished aspirations will soon become realities. i My sincerest congratulations on your graduation and my very best wishes are extended to all of you. ' . D 0 -1 y .W e I , XY' L MMM History of Bowen High School Educational facilities in the Calumet region of Chicago multiplied rapidly from 1853-1884. In 1876 The Bowen Elementary School was built at 93rd Street and Houston Avenue. It contained 4 rooms, one of which was used for advanced high school work. From this modest beginning rose the South Chicago High School and its successor the james Harvey Bowen High School. The curriculum consisted of Latin, French, German, Greek, all branches of Mathe- matics, and all of our present sciences and social subjects. Very little technical work was offered, Business courses and science laboratory work were unheard of at this time. Gradually stenography and bookkeeping were introduced and a sewing class of 12 girls was organized in the basement in 1909. Commencement exercises took place once a year, so that failure of a subject meant the redoing of a year's work. Com- mencement exercises were held in the Calumet Theatre or at Becks Hall in the vicinity of 91st and 92nd and Commercial Avenue. In 1889 the need was felt for an addition to the school to take care of the increas- ing number of students. Charles I. Parker, Superintendent of Schools in South Chicago, became principal and was largely responsible for the present building which was con- structed in january, 1911. Pupils came to this new school from South Chicago, Pullman, Windsor Park, and even as far as Indiana. Carpenters continued to work in the school for weeks after it opened. XVhile the work continued, Mr. Parker had his office temporarily in 3ozA, Feeding on the grass on the front were chickens, geese, ducks, and goats. Roll was called in the auditorium because division rooms were not available during the first days. Both teachers and students carried their own lunches. A four piece orchestra was organized that played after school on Fridays. The money earned bought footlights and burlap curgtns for ther.-stage. The students were awarded J S500 library for obtaining so many subscrinfions for the Herald and Examiner. ,On school was named in honor of james Harvey Bowen. Mr. of all new and improved schools. To him, to Charles and to the pioneers cf the fifties is Bowen's record due .. th e school of the Calumet District, a' U1-M fyM, 'ik Zim MM 7L l fL f'P 'QQ4 g A Y. 72 Mfg? , ,,:1WA' IAQVQ-H-51-4-3... President r r - DORIS SANDERS BETTY MADSEN JOE VIDMAR BETTY HUTSON MARGARET PILCHARD September 6, 1941, we entered Bowen High School and began our high school life. We knew very little about it and were teased constantly by certain exalted personages called Seniors. However we managed the Freshman year and got acquainted with our associates, earned Tau Pi Alpha credits and ventured out to the various games. In our second and third years, we gathered speed and became active in the ' ' 're now a definite cog Chorus', the Gym Dcp in the machinery of Bowen High School. Q And soon that machinery rolled us on and over into our Senior year. Then came Senior Elections in 4B and in 4A, the Class Picnic, the Senior Prom, the Award Assembly, and Graduation Night. Slowly the book of our high school life began to close as we lomas and then walked down and out to the music of the recessional. 97- artment, and other organizations. Little did we realize on that day, that within ri few months our country would be plunged into a war that would greatly affect our future. As freshies we immediately tried to get into the Bowen spirit by joining clubs which were open to freshmen, attending the football games, and senior plays. By getting ' h into t e swing of things we hoped that we wouldn't appear so green. But I guess we didn't conceal our greenness for as we walked down the corridor looking for our classes we could hear Huh! Look at the freshies. As sophomores and juniors we realized the importance of education to a warring nation and seriously though of what the future held in store for us. We were seniors then and between acting dignified and keeping our heads out of the clouds we were kept quite busy. 'We did find time, however, for the serious things and some of us received Tau Pi Alpha Keys, Bowen Letters, and a few of us were inducted into the National Honor Society. After senior election our minds turned to thoughts of that wonderful night to come-Our Prom. Wie had a super time that night at the Knickerbocker Hotel in the Rainbow Room. Senior Class Day and Senior Award Assembly flew by and then the long awaited night-Graduation' We were V saddened graduation night by the conspicuous absence of many of the fellows from s class who-left to fight side by side with former Bowenites in the service of opt country. MARGARET PILCHARD MARGIE QZETICH February Editor' fum' brlrlur Bowenite Staff The Bowenite as we know it today is comparitively new, for it was first published in 19243 14 years after the establishment of Bowen High School. Circulating prior to 1924 was the Prep, published twice yearly. This small magazine reviewed the years events and operated in much the same manner as the Bowenite does now. As a larger variety of school events occurred, the need was felt for n larger condensed yearly publication. Thus, came into life, The Bowenitei' which has enjoyed 21 years of life in good health and will continue to do so with the generous and helpful aid of the sponsor, Miss Catherine M. Hartigan. The editors join in sincerely thanking her for hcr patience and understanding, also the February :md June staffs who worked tirelessly to the end to finally see the edition distributed. .,- ? Help came from various other channels-Bob Kasiske who wrote clever sketches lil S K . 0 .-V the Boys Sports Section-members of the faculty and sponsors of clubs who assisted in 5' putting across' the functions of their clubs - engrnvers and printers who came through ' in the middle of a labor and paper crisis - and the student body. It is a traditional Bowen club, having been in existence since the earliest Bowen days. The club, under the sponsorship of Miss Lynch, is run democratically through committees and is primarily a service club. Senior Girls Council members are active in war work. On Bow Day they sell bows to the students, the proceeds going to the Chicago Service Men's Centers. Green bows are for the Freshmen, red for the Sophomores, white for the Juniors, and purple for the Seniors. Servicemen visiting the school are given address books, with the compli- ments of the Senior Girls Council. Members of the council act as hostesses and waitresses at teas for the National Honor Society members and their parents and teachers after the induction eeremoniesg and at dinners given by Mr. Hearne for the P.T.A. or for special visitors. One of their social activities is giving a party for the graduates each semester. The girls are always willing to serve Bowen in these capacities. Wi Household Arts Departinent The foods I classes start out with simple lessons in the preparation of breakfasts. After mastering those, they learn to combine their lessons and make meals. The girls practice at home and report to the teacher on the success of their undertakings. Thorough training is given in meal planning and the nutritional value of different foods. In the Foods II classes the girls do advanced work in preparing and serving lunch- eons. Other instructions include manners, ettiquette, consumer-buyer problems, and food budgets. The girls in the Clothing and Advanced Dressmaking classes malte the garments they need, accessories for their costumes, and do renovating problems. A careful study is made of clothing, style, and personality developments. The Foods girls serve at teas and lunchcons and help entertain other clubsg while the Clothing classes have fashion shows and help make costumes for other entertainments. The planning and directing of these activities rests with Miss Barlow, Bowen's official NVar Co-ordinator. The most important of Bowens contributions toward the successful prosecution of the war is, of course, the selling of XVar Bonds and Stamps. Nve have won the Minute Man Flag, indicative of the fact that 9011, of the students have fulfilled their pledge to buy at least a Stamp a month. To date, we have purchased two 350,000 P51 Army Pursuit Planes fMustang Fighterj through Wai' Bonds and Stamps sales. Pur- chases of Stamps amount to about S500 weekly. Also important among Bowen's war activities are the waste paper, tin can, old clothes, and soap drives, conducted by Miss Barlow and successfully carried out by both students and faculty. Proceeds from the waste paper brought to Bowen every Wednesday have gone towards various causes. S250 of the money has gone to Service Men's Centers. a S100 Bond has been purchased for Bowen, and our lawn and school grounds have been improved through the planting of flowers also purchased with the money from the waste paper. A large part of the payment for Bowen's new curtains was made by Waste Paper proceeds. Posted in Bowcn's main hall is our Honor Roll, consisting of names of former Bowenites now in the services of our country. Although incomplete, the list is com- posed of over,1300 names. The twenty-eight gold stars on our Honor Roll are in memory of Bowen's twenty-eight servicemen who have given their lives for their country. The list is kept up to date by pupils who submit the names of their friends and relatives. Seeing the names of thosee they know on our Honor Roll perhaps is responsible for the way students have entered whole heartedly into our war activities. Bowen has made a record to be proud of in Red Cross, and Community and War Fund drives. Red Cross donations amounted to Sl,246,96g 5857.75 being the teachers contribution, and 5389.21 coming from the students. The teachers gave 5713.13 to the Community and War Fund drive, while the students gave 5336.-13g making a grand total of 51,0-49.56. These activities, which are essential to the winning of the war, have been success- ful because of the encouragement and co-operation of Mr. Hearne, the Faculty, and the students. , 'ws r' W 'egxbflh' 'N' ' f- , .X '.,:i, Q- M. Semester after semester we strive to carry out these objectives to the best of our ability. Our foreign correspondence has been hampered by the war, as our mail takes four months and even longer to complete its journey. However, in spite of this in- convenience, our members continue to correspond with their Spanish speaking friends and in this way we feel we are helping to further the good neighbor policy, and in turn are doing our bit for the war effort. Purchase of a War Bond, generous donation to the Polish Relief Soap Drive, turn- ing over the proceeds of a Victory Pin sale to the U.S.O., and compiling over three hundred scrap-books for the soldiers are some of the activities of which the members are well proud. Letters, which the soldiers have written to the students, attest to the fact that thc purpose of this project to entertain the soldiers was well fulfilled. The social functions included a picnic in Lincoln Park and group attendance of various musicals and art exhibits. The sponsor of the Polish Club is H. Orzechowski. ll Century of Progress ln Chicago Schools V Pioneers in education strived in the 1830's to improve facilities for educating the young people. Among these was Miss Eliza Chappel, Chicago's first public school teacher. She established a one room school at Wfacker Drive between State and Dear- born, and in the face of discouragement she managed to build it up until the faculty had to be increased to three. The school's success was eminent and the town held a meeting and decided to cooperate in financing the school. This, of course, made it a public school, financed by the public. It was the first of its kind in the city. Thus it grew and in 1845 was named the Dearborn School. From this humble beginning the Educational System of Chicago grew and improved, until now it is rec- ognized as having the best system of schooling the physically unfit. This includes special hospital schools, and schools for the blind and the crippled. Among other schools are the Vocational, Technical, and Trade High Schools. Each modern school building is equipped with a well trained faculty and tools for various subjects. And so in a century the Chicago school system has grown and thrived and progressed. . . . :Li INR' - SGT. DAVID W. SEAHOLM Dsll ,J fn KIIEJ' R. 0. T. C. C. unit of 1944-45 is the most determined organization of cadets, non-coms' and ollicers ever privileged to serve Bowen High School. No matter how great the odds or how great the task before them, this R. O. T. C. unit has never failed or faltered in its loyalty to its school. The cadets have drilled hard, worked long at many military projects and have suffered many a defeatg but to their eyes a defeat was a great victory because they did their best. Much of the splendid showing on the part of the cadets is due to the efiicient and capable leadership of the NCO'S and Ofliccrs. It is true that no one is perfect but one can honestly admit that the present staff of officers are the best Bowen has had in many semesters. At the top, where all the blame would go for an incllicient unit. are these mum leaders. well deserving of the congratulations for a job well doneg Sgt. David NV. Seaholm, Military Instruetnrg Lt. To these officers and some in particular go much of the credit for a great R. O. T. C. unit. They have accepted the motto, Ours is not to reason why. . . Ours is but to do or die. Our rifle team has placed 12th out of 29 schools in the Sixth Service Command Match and 14th in in the Hearst Trophy Match. The Picked Platoon was one of the best Bowen has put on the floor in 3 years. and having been defeated-through no fault of its own-is more determined to have a winning platoon next year. In service to the school, many of our best guard details, color details, and special exhibition squads, under the most capable leadership, were used in the service for Bowens programs any where, any place, any time. In service to our country, one only needs to see the R. O. T. C. Of course nut! If you put a little time and practice into each stunt you will get it sooner or later. Yes, the annual stunt time is here again and as usual the girls have to pass the ten of them in order to earn an S'.' XVhesi I said earn I really meant it because it sure takes plenty of hard work. Even though it is tough, the girls usually come out with flying colors. just as soon as stunts are over you will find everybody getting ready for the next thing on the girs gym program. You guessed right the first time. Posture! Those protruding tumrnies are pulled in, Droop shoulders just don't droop any more .und before you realize it all those forward heads are put back into place. They all compete for the title of Posture Queen but this fall they gave A's to the girls with the perfect posture, in spring they will resume the regular posture contest. An A is an honor, so girls let's all get on the merry-go-round and strive for the perfect goal in posture. Then before you know it. the pingspong tournament rolls around. Although it is an extra curricular activity, many girls came out to show their pin-pong ability. Some may be beginners while the others may be experienced players but no matter which, they all enjoy playing with each other. XVeek after week the ball keeps bouncing back and forth and while your head is still in circle some shy Miss comes up to the front and ranks as champ for another year. Facts The tournament between the classes is now in its final stages. The juniors and Seniors tilt, for the title of school champion will be a wow. By all means, the crowd is not silent and tense because there are cheers and echoes of encouragement throughout the whole game. Finally there is a cry of victory and the winners cheer triumphantly while the losers swallow a large lump and make a promise to do better next tin1e. Now for prohciency which is to be tougher than ever. The new national require- ments were set so the individual would benefit by the amount of time she has to spend in each particular event. Thus, practicing every night will increase your ability and eventually you'd pull up your score so as it would equal the S average. Your condition and your body will be less fatigued and you will attain a more perfect physical condition. Take me out to the Ball Park, take me out to the game! So dyou really want to go? Facts The basketball season flies in and before you know it the hasketballs are bouncing around the gym as the upper classmen play against each gym class for the basketball title. The lower classmcn struggle with each other for the captain basketball crown. Basketball season is over but we certainly did have loads of fun outside of those few minor injuries. Tell us more teacher, tcll us more! Yes, there is still a lot more to tell about the gym program because we have just Hnished the first semester activities, The five day gym program has passed the great test, for with all the war emergencies our bodies have to be trained and toned up to a T so that we can meet the strain of school plus wartime work. Spring fever is in the air and so is the volley-ball. XVith spring comes volleyball and now I guess I'm talking the language of the girls because they just love that game. Though some of the girls may have a little frog or hoarse in their throat they all hate to see the end of the season roll around. ,... . '. -- 9' fa K 114, J .-1 ,i ,ip -F ', dr. age -wr -.. Basketball A Due to graduation, Bowen's senior team was made up entirely of reserves from last year. With this and-other factors considered, Bowen's sixth place finish in the South Section race was very commendable. In the annual Holiday Tournament at the University of Chicago, Bowen entered a team composed of members from both the junior and senior teams. Unfortunately their first opponent was mighty Senn, winner of the tournament and later City League Champs. The game was very well played, with the score being 36 to 26 in Senn's favor. Directing the activities of the branch as Assistant Principal is Mrs. Mary E. Budasz. ' Since its' establishment the Branch has grown into a busy colony of students who enjoy the many activities it has to offer. Its various activities include an Honor Club, Hall Guard Organization, Student Board, and a group who contribute to the Bowen Arrow and are known as the Twigs from the Branch. Also ,in their midst are groups known as Paper Salvage Helpers, Cookie Bakers, and Entertainers. Their contribution to the War Effort has been a great one. Some of the girls assist the neighborhood hospital by working as Nurses Aides. The Home Economics depart- ment bakes cookies and sends the to the U.S.O. centers. War Bonds and Stamps sales are always high and the students co-operate to make salvage drives a success.
