Pres. Eluss History af Sfcbruary 1944 As we, the seniors, turn the pages of this year's Bowenite, we likewise turn in our minds the memories of our high school years. It seems impossible to realize that four years have slipped by since our entrance into Bowen. ' February 1940, started our Freshman year, this year, rather dim in our memory now, was the one in which we first began to make the friendships which we were to keep during our school years, and perhaps all our lives. It was in this first year that we began to earn our Tau Pi Alpha credits, work for National Honor, and join the other organizations' open to freshmen. S As Sophomores we became more familiar with school life and began to venture opinions at Student Board meetings, attend football games, senior plays, and join the choruses. Yes, we were establishing ourselves on a firm base for our next two years. In our Junior year many of us had, the honor of being elected into the National Honor Society, we earned our Tau Pi Alpha keys, and began to hold offices in various clubs. Then came our senior year, and it was just as wonderful as we anticipated. There was the thrill and suspense of senior elections: our social committee sponsoring the senior hay ride, and as the end of the semester drew near, there was our Class Day Program, the Senior Award assembly, in which the outstanding students were honored, and last but not least, the highlight of,our' social events, the new and patriotic Victory Prom which was held in our school gym. We certainly have had a wonderful Senior year and now, as graduation draws near, the best wishes of our entire senior class go out to several of our fellow classmates who are now in the Armed Forces. It has no hearing on their 'character or personality or gfurther am- hitions, hut it is just a letter of make belie1I1e suppositions and remarks. I JEANETTE PEARSON I Class of january 1944 I January, 1954 MR. BO BOWEN I President Senior Class 3 Bowen High School, Chicago, Illinois I Dear Siri p Another year has rolled around, which means reunion time for the January 1944 class of Graduates. Each year has scattered odr group a little more, but, despite the distance same travelled, the affair was well attehded, and some even brought their fami ies. Dr. Horace Ivy, M D, acted as master of ceremonies, and, needless to say he did a very marvelous job. It pleased us all immenshly when Lucille Lindmark, Broad- way and Hollywood star, added her sparkling presenlze to the gathering. Let me see now who else of prominence was there? Oh, yes, Carol Nelson, and by the way she is more beautiful than ever, was present with Bernice Priggs, and Eunice Linden. Nancy Nors-trom, voted man hater, was there with her handsome hus- band and two beautiful children. Joe Tabone also cI1me later, and guess what, Edward Yuratovac and Joe are now stars of M.G.M. I thought they would gain Hollywood contracts some day. ' I Well of course our old class officers were sitting at the speakers table, Donna Vlaisavich, Helen Knezevich, who's medical accompyishments we have heard so much about, and Eleanor Lindgren, and the years have really been kind to them. Let me see, who else do I remember as bein I present? Claude Mazzaco, Shir- ley Dust, Matt Chadish, Shirley Guse, and Major George Cvejanovich, of the Army Intelligence Dept., with Gay Stuck, and Capt. Ricliard Chockul with Betty Conners occupied one table, and they really made a distinctive looking crowd. George Triplett, who by the way now has Ihis own well known band, had as his guest Lillian Vidovich, well-known journalist, and George Pavlos, concert violinist, with Cecilia Carlson made a beguilling looking foursdme. Also at one of ' the main tables, chatting away about old times were Elaine Dukas, Florence Hedges, and Model for Vogue, AudreIy Peterson, of course, as expected, the so voted class pals were together, namely Bob Schhfer and Jeanette Pearson. Above all the noise and clanking dishes colild be heard distinctive talking of June, most talkative Dust. It really surprised everyone, myself included, when Art Klug and Dorothy Baker came to the dinner together. Eagerly awaiting the dance music to start were Ethel Katz and Tom Ksiazek, yoted best dancers, they still top the list in my estimation. I I Always adding their witty remarks when thf: party seemed' drab made Adeline Difirancisco and Martin Pearson the center of attraction all evening. Bob Baker with Lillian Bingham, Gloria Hatlsler, Helen Zyluk, and Antionette Horn made a grand entrance in his eternal Baker Fli'l!6T!,, I Regarding well known celebraties, we were greatly honored to have in our presence Art Fata, star player on the Yankee Championship team. I ' I I I I I I I I I gp I Aldo Ganz, Ted Hyze, George Chanek, and Joseph Isek acted as waiters at our super dinner, and guess what, they didn't even break a dish. Of course, we needed- waitresses and dish washers so Jacqueline Blouin, Doris Siegel, Jonas Florez, Dan Martino, Ruth Baker, John Rebecchi, Dorothy Anderson and Olga Korich volunteered and from the noise that came from the kitchen I imagine they had a super time, even if it was washing dishes. To the following people we owe a sincere Thank You, for the splendid work they did in securing a place for our reunion producing the marvelous entertainment, and really planning and carrying out the whole party. Ann Bugos, Chairman, Sylvester Nymcek Co-Chairman, Charlene Hausler, Dorothy Jazinski, Dolores Joworski, Edward Schmidt, Agnes Rezac, Leonard Milewski, and Rose Szchrodrodrowski. Special thanks go to Leonard Mulcahey for the beautiful work and original design our menu covers carried. So not having any more to say about our grand reunion, I will close with the wish that you and your class will have as great a senior year as we have had, and that your reunions will be as memorable as ours have been. Glass flisfary af june 1944 Let your mind wander back four years to September 1940 and those first days at high school. Remember that sinking feeling you had when you opened the doors of Bowen with its long corridors and the endless stream of students. It seemed as though you'd never get into the swing of things, yet before you knew it you were part of Bowen life. We, were the fortunate class that first enjoyed our new addition with its sparkling swimming pool, bright spotless lunchroom and many modern class- rooms. The year passed quickly. We had settled down- to quiet existence as Sophomores when we were suddenly rudely awakened by our country becoming involved in war. The hush of air raid drills, the Red Cross Drives, the scrap drives, the sale of war bonds and stamps kept before our mind the catastrophe into which we had been plunged. December 7 will linger with us forever. Our third year arrived with equal speed. The more athletic became letter men and girls, and distinguished themselves in baseball, football, basketball, and track. The Girls Chorus gained city wide recognition for having won an Sn rating for three Vears in the Choral Contests. Many of us were to be honored with our T. P. A. key. The Honor Club was rapidly gaining new members and some achieved the coveted honor of becoming members of the National Honor Society. Before we knew it we were seniors. Yes, we were on top and mighty proud too. It was at this time that the U. S. Army began tqncall our eighteen year old class mates and many left our school to take an active part in the Great War. We have missed them and we know that they are bringing glory to our school by their participation in our fight for the ideals that Bowen has always held high. The election of officers provided excitement and soon after came preparation for the Prom. That night at the Medinah Club will linger in our memories as one of the grand experiences in our High School Career. Then came the big event, graduation on June 21, 1944. Complete in cap and gown we marched down that long aisle to the soft strains of Land of Hope and Glory'. The man power shortage certainly shows on this staff, for Gloria was compelled to take over the Boys' sports section while. Ruth Zobel had charge of the Girls' athletic activities. . The ideals which must be maintained by its members are charac- ter, leadership, and service combined with high scholarship. Membership in this society is the highest honor any student can be given: The entrance eligibility requires that a student has been a member of the school Honor Club for at least five semesters, that he has earned five service points, and has been approved by the faculty for high character. Symbolizing this great and honored society are the Keystone and the Flaming Torch. The Keystone is the symbol of high standards while the Flaming Torch recog- nizes the determination with which one goal of the desire for learning has been reached. Mrs. T. G. The Student Board has been actively working this year to fulfill its objective of serving the school. Each division and club has a representative who is the Student Board member for the semester. It is the duty of this representative to attend meetings when they are held and to discuss any problems that arise which are of concern to the student body. - One of the greatest feats accomplished through the years has been the CLEAN- UP CAMPAIGN which is supervised by the Student Board. Posters are distributed and all around effort is made to clean-up the school in the month of April. Also, dur- ing these past several years the Student Board has raised money on a voluntary contri- bution basis for the School Childrens' Aid Society. This year 5655.50 was forwarded to this Society, who furnish clothing free of charge to the school children of Chicago. They try to build up the morale of the school by emphasizing cleanliness and good citizenship throughout the school. . The club's aim is to carry on social as well as service activities. One of their new enterprises will be to give a tea for National Honor Society members at the time of their induction. A traditional social event is a party for the outgoing senior girls. Bow Day occurrs every semester. The money is used either for the benefits of the U. S. O. or to purchase some needed articles for the school. In the Words of the constitution, Our purpose in having a club is to increase' our knowledge of science, and to bring things of interest to Bowen for the student body to enjoy. Two greatest highlights of the club this year were the hanging of the picture in room 211, honoring Ma Kluge who had taught Biology for thirty years there. The annual visit of Sam Campbell with his beautiful colored movies and his in- spirational talk was the second highlight. The Biology Club was the first club in Bowen to buy a war bond. They did this in December, 1941. It has also contributed all its boy presidents to the Armed Forces. Miss Thelma Jones is the sponsor of the Biology Club. It's a bit difficult to visualize the months of work that are put into just one musical selection. At the band concerts that are given every year we, of the audience, sit back in relaxation enjoying the beautiful music being played. We never stop to think, My, every performer up on that stage had to prove to Miss Mildred Larsen, the band's able director, that he had the ability to play one of the band's many valuable musical instru- ments-clarinet, saxaphone, tuba, french horn, trumpet, oboe, flute, picalo, cornet, trombone, and drums. It must have been a proud day in his life when he f1rst donned that handsome purple and gold braided uniform, which is the envy of every student at Bowen who does not have the qualifications to possess one. Why, he spends on the average of two or three periods' a day in the sound proof Band Room practicing to en- tertain us with music that is always at the highest degree of perfection!! But he's amply rewarded for his untiring efforts on days such as April 17, 1944, when at the band competition held at Harrison High School he played an important part in the E that was awarded Bowen. Coach Lloyd Pekelsma did a very fine job of training the boys for league competition, due to this, a few of the boys placed in the city finals. - John Kurtz, tipping the scale at one hundred and five pounds, placed third, John Corich, at 125 pounds, and Charles Fattore, a 135 pounder, also deserve recogni- tion for their aggressiveness in the city meet. The team that seemed to give Bowen the most trouble was Blue Island's, but even then the score was closely contested. - The team nearly won the south section tittle but due to injuries of many of the members were not strong enough for title competition. Joe Cyborski, who has wrestled' for Bowen for two years, was unable to wrestle the latter part of the season due to a neck injury. Because of this he was forced to spend the rest of the season refereeing the matches. ' P Of the twenty-four wrestlers on the team, nine qualified for those coveted ath- letic letters. Baseball Bowen had another successful season last year, when they again took South Section Crown and engaged in the City Play-Offs. We are hoping for another success- ful team here at Bowen this year. - We went thru last year's season by losing only one game in league competition and disposed of Kelly in the quarter-final game, but lost to Harrison High in the Semi- Final game by a score of 2-0, which was played in Comiskey Park. Joe Baker-Chuck Koney--Art Fayta--and Casey Lewandowski were the main reason for Bowen's success. Harold Brodsky is a butcher! In Mario Castillo's grocery section Ruth Carlson is the cashier. I know that I wouldn't want such a nerve wracking job. 4Dorothy Ciserella is managing our cafeteria and you ought to taste some of the delicious concoctions that her chief chef scrambles up, Alice Bystrzycki isn't such a bad soda jerk either-yum, yum! When- ever someone in this city wants to have a good photograph of himself, he comes to Peek-In's picture takin' papa, Eugene Chmura.
