These youthful guardians of liberty and defenders of peace are heroes be- yond the call, for they are sacrificing their lives so thai the generations to come will be assured a peaceful life, tree from tyranny and oppres- sion. It is to each of these Soldiers. Sailors, Marines. and their respective Auxiliaries, individually, that we, the classes of Nineteen Hundred Forty- three, dedicate this edition of the Bowenite, as a token of qratitude for the great sacrifices made by them to brinq this qreat conflict to a success- ful end in ultimate Victory. ,-fffj, - 29' ?r5:,:Q:f:fzi'1i1um,fg1rsf., ff? 1 V V Ni ' ll is W . Rouih Although Miss Routh has retired after such a suc- cesstul teaching career at Bowen, the lovely Home Economics Department, which she modernized, will be an immense help to the tuture domestic science pupils at Bowen. She was a genial, kindly, alert teacher with such a lull knowledge other subject that she made it most interesting. She was always willing to help pupils as well as many teachers, plan wholesome, attrac- tive, and practical menus. To a lovable teacher, who is aiding in the war eltort by teaching Nutrition Classes lor the Red Cross, we wish all the luck and happiness that the tuture can possibly hold. Helen Loomis Kluge Alter Mrs. Kluge's retirement, there seemed to be an empty spot in Bowen. H Mrs. Kluge, or Ma , as she was aftectionally called by most ot her students, came to Bowen two years alter its openingl and spent thirty years teaching science in room 2ll. Her inspiring teaching and complete understanding ot human nature combined to send all her students away with knowledge ot the subject. To Ma , who lett such a sweet and sincere impression on all who have known her, we wish loads ot luck and sincere happiness in the years to come. We will always cherish the memory of her lovable character and are proud ot the many advantages Bowen has gained through hm sincere devotion to her work. Prisk With the passing of Miss Prisk, Bowen lost one ot the tinest teachers she has ever had. ln a tumultuous world her modesty and gentleness were rare and precious treasures. The lcindliness of her smile and the warmth of her interest in all with whom she came in contact endeared her to all of us, both teachers and students. The goodness ot her spirit made her see only the best in others. Injustice was a challenge to her. Her integ- rity she wore as a shiny armour, the brightness of which enlightened the ways of many and the strength of which brought courage to un- counted numbers in the years she spent at Bowen. Vice President Robert Dinnocenzo, President Eileen Ycxnuzzi, Treasurer Helen Andrich, Editor-in-Chief CLASS HISTORY OF FEBRUARY 1943 As we, the seniors, turn the paces oi this year's Bowenite, we likewise turn in our minds the memories of our high school years. It seems impossible to realize that four years have slipped by since our entrance into Bowen. February 1939, started our Freshman year, this year, rather dim in our memory now, was the one in which we first beqan to make the friendships which we were to keep durinq our school years, and perhaps all our lives. It was in this first year that we began to earn our Tau Pi Alpha credits, work for National Honor, and join the other organizations open to freshmen, As Sophomores we became more familiar with school lite and began to venture opinions at Student Board meetings, attend football games, senior plays, and join the choruses, Yesg we were establishing ourselves on a firm base for our next two years. ln our lunior year many of us had the honor of beinq elected into the National Honor Society, we earned our 'Tau Pi Alpha keys, and began to hold offices in various clubs. Then came our senior year, and it was just as wonderful as we anticipated. There was the thrill and suspense of senior elections: the presentation of the senior play, A Letter to the General? our football team's placing second in the South Side competition: our social committee sponsoring the senior hay ride: and as the end of the semester drew near, there was our Class Day Program, the Senior Award assembly, in which the outstanding students were honored, and last but not least, the highlight of our social events, the new and patriotic Victory Prom which was held in our school gym. We certainly have had a wonderful Senior year and now, as qraduation draws near, the best wishes of our entire senior class go out to several oi our fellow classmates who are now in the Armed Forces. . On Ianuary twenty-eighth, 1943, when we gain our coveted diploma, we leave Bowen: but the knowledge and character we have obtained goes with us to guide us through our entire lives. Class Motto A oem cannot be polished without rubbing, and a man cannot be perfected without tria1s. Class Colors Red, White, and Blue. Class Flower Red roses, white carnations, and blue cornflowers. Vice President Helene Krainovich. Secretary Richard Schulz. President Sophie Popovich, Editor-in-Chief Mildred Markusic, Treasurer History ot the Class oi Iune '43 '43 entered. From this l-lazy was the world into which our class of Iune freshman year blossomed a class of 368 younq men and women prepared to u hold the diilicult steps in a world ol turmoil. P The first three years gave us our basic training while the fourth and most 'm ortant year placed us in certain degrees on the scale ot ability. Our senior 1 D year was memorable, Socially we experienced such events as the senior ' ' t' oi 1 ction the suspenses ot the class notable election, the various ques ions ee . the senior prom, and ever so many other important items. Educationally, ' it tl derstandinq the outside chaos, we worked harder and more e icien y. Lll'l There were more subjects in accord with the war atmosphere such as pre-flight and a more strenuous physical program, Throughout the tour years the goals of the football and baseball teams, th tame of the Choral clubs, and the school paper have drawn the class to- e qether to a common cause which has made Bowen outstanding. Unforqetable were the calls to our younq men from our country to serve in our army, navy, marine and air corps, and here they anxiously awaited their chance to defend their beloved rights. In each individual character was tound one typical American feeling-to hope lor the best and to prepare lor the worst. Zawacki L. Zieqler B. Zinke S. Zmiqrocki M. Zupan When classes re-opened in September, 1942, everyone was shocked to learn that Eleanor Krupa had met with a fatal acci- dent during the summer months. When cheer and encouragement were being sought, Eleanor was the one most likely to provide it. Her heart-warming smile was an assurance of a sunny and cheerful disposition. As president of the Sub-Dehs from February, 1942, to Iune, 1942, she led them through many delightful and beneficial pro- grams. Any task she undertook was a success due to the eager- ness with which it was undertaken and the yielding of her untirinq efforts to make it a success. She was a member of the Honor Club for three semesters, ond, undoubtedly, she would have received high honors at the Senior Award Assembly. The memory of her sweet nature will always be in our hearts, and will be an ideal inspiration for one aiming toward the height of a genial personality, ' x 5- Page forty-nine ,., V .' T V! Betty Booth and Helen Paun, worked busily over the dummy and galley sheets, while Kathryn Davis handled the financial situation. Sellinq the books to the senior class was cleverly managed by Estelle Beda. Typing the material to send to press, was ci job well done by Mary Ivcmcich, Mary Kristovich. and Dorothy Ierich. Busily running to and fro collectinq ads was Mary Iandrich. with the help oi Loretta Rozek, Bertha Grevin, and Isabelle Gronkiewicz. Clicking the camera constantly was Frank Hlaner until Uncle Sam ren- dered his call, and from there, Eugene Chmura carried on the work as success- fully as did Frank. The artistic touches here and there in the book were created by Ioanne Brody and lack Terrazas. The larqe section of sports is clue to the hard work ot Ray Campbell, Ed Durbin, and Phyllis Fattore. Division representatives, Sophie Yuzwiak, Ursula Ianny. Theresa Burke, Alice Pietraczek, Vivian Kuehl, Dolores Brown. Iennie Schlak, Ada Smith, Gloria Guse, Violet Mazar, B. BASEBALL After such a successful season as last year, when Bowen was represented in the Finals for the City Championship, baseball has taken on a new lease and shows equal promise oi great success this year, although all but three of last year's team graduated last Iune. Coach I. B. McGinnis has a very strong organization again this year, and hopes are very high for aonther Sectional Championship as well as being a contender for the City finals. In Charles Koney. Bowen boasts of one oi the best performers at second base in Prep circles, We have seen for many years. ln accomplishing the feat of entering the City finals, Bowen defeated the strong Lane team by an overwhelming score. This team was the favorite, but it made no difference to the Bowen team. The only team besides Harrison to defeat Bowen last year was Calumet, Giving Bowen 14 wins against 3 defeats for the season. Much is to be expected of Eugene Thomas, Casimir Lewandowski, Marco Ialcovich, Dan Deianovlch and Art lrayta and many other newcomers for this year's showing. I-lere's hoping for another successful season for the boys. Pag -eventy-six n I' FOOTBALL TOP ROW: L. Pekelsma, Coach, R. Modura, I. Tompulis, T. Collins. l. Pelnza, G. Triplelt, R, Hwastechi, A. At other times during the season, however, an exceptional plague of iniuries riddled the starting line-up, and a lack of good reserves prevented the team from demonstrating its true caliber. Nevertheless our gridders ended regular South Section play in a tie for second place with Morgan Park, with Fenger once more taking the title. The seasons tabulation oi league contests listed us with tive victories and but one defeat. In the season's opener our green squad splashed through to a 6 to 0 victory over a determined South Shore team. Co-Captains Bob Brigham and Bob Plevo were the main factors in this battle. Our second game found the squad riddled by injuries as it squared off against the mighty Fenger eleven. With lohn Booth and Wallace Kilinski side- lined with injuries and the co-captains, Plevo and Brigham, not up to par physically, the Titans found little difficulty in romping to a 61 to O victory. That the fighting spirit was possessed by our lads was demonstrated by their ability to spring back and knock oft Harper 18 to O the following Saturday, although key players were still side-lined. Walter Iakubowski, stellar halt-back bore the brunt of the oifense aiong with old reliable Brigham. The following game was a night affair with Parker at Shewbridge Field. Iohn Booth, finally recovered from his severe back injury, returned to active duty and on the first play of the game roniped sixty yards to score standing up. From this auspicious beginning our warriors carried on to a final victory oi i9 to 7 proportion. ' f Wage-Seventy 'ytzen -.f ., - ,G 1. 3 In a non-league encounter the squad invaded Muskegon, Michiqan to test the state champions and, although deteated 21 to 6, demonstrated that when they were in good physical shape they were able to play real football. Paul Papas, watch-charm guard, amazed the Muskegon fans with his detensive ability while Iohn Booth electrified them by sprinting 96 yards to chalk up one ot the longest runs on record. Hyde Park furnished the opposition in a league game the following Satur- day. Bowen's 25 to 6 victory was made possible mostly through the stellar play of Claude Mazzocco, Bud Ivy, Nick Babich, and George Camalick. Hirsch then tested the Bowen Powerhouse and was convinced by the 38 to O score that the power was there. Mike and George Lalich, Bob Plevo, Paul Papas, Claude Mcrzzocco, Iohn Booth, Walter Iakubowski, and Bob Brig- ham all demonstrated exceptional ability in this last league contest. Plevo, Booth, and Brigham all were mentioned in various All-City teams, while Claude Mazzocco was elected to captain the 1943 eleven. COACHES E A. Rosinbum I. BASKETBALL Although the basketball season at Bowen was not as successful this year, both the Iuniors and Seniors were the nucleus of a much improved team and should make basketball history next season. Each game of the past season showed improvement over the previous one and a working combination which should be invincible next year. Coach Buchanan's untiring effort with the com-4 paratively new material he had at hand was shown by the way the boys fought for every point in every game. Bowen's wrestlers are fine examples of true sportsmen and excellent wrestlers, putting every ounce of their enerqy into the fight to win for Bowen. Our wrestling team this year was cheered to victory and through defeat by what was possibly the bestattended wrestlinq season of any school in Chicago. They watched Bowen's team beat Hirsch 35-9, Morgan Park 24-14 and battle to keep other teams down to such winnings as 18-16, 21-18, 23-13, and 25-ll for the meets with Parker, Chicago Vocational School, Calumet, and Fenqer. Two of these meets probably would have resulted in victories but for the absence due to illness of Dick Dykma, our fiery 125-pounder, who took third place in the city meet. Another notable of the city meet was Ray Cyborski, the captain of the wrestling team who took fourth place in the 145 pound class. Richy Krohn, our regular 115 pound qrappler added weight near the end of the season and competed in the 125 pound division in the city meet where he won his first two bouts and finally was defeated in the quarter-finals. In addition to the league meets our boys engaged Mt. Carmel Hiqh School in two practice tilts and defeated them quite handily on each occasion. With six regulars returninq for next year and several promisinq rookies the outlook is for an even better record in 1943-44. Page Eighty-tivo , ' ,X i .' TRACK Due to the tact that Bowen is not equipped with adequate track facilities our track team was unable to do the riqht amount of practice to produce a win- ninq team. However, Coach I. B. McGinnis was able to get a very representa' tive group of boys together to represent us in the indoor meet, most cf which are new boys. The outdoor season should be even more successful because of the tact that the boys can be out of doors for their work. A very promising group of boys will join the squad at this time and put Bowen in the winning column. MANAGERS P. Spencer R. Iackson TRACK 'F Iurelc R. Oban WRESTLXNG SWIMMING C. BOWEN BRANCH I The Branch I was established in 1931. When Bowen became very crowded. the Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Bogan, decided to send a portion of Bowen's first and second year students over to the building now known as Bowen Branch I, 9258 Houston Avenue. Miss Mary E. McNichols was selected to open this portion of Bowen's High School, and she has directed its activities since. This little Colony ot Bowen is a very busy place. Its students enjoy every kind of extra-curricular club. They have their unit of Bowen's Honor Club, of Hall Guards and of the great Bowen Student Board. At this time they have been helping in the War Effort to the best of their ability. They have been working to capacity. The boys and girls send cookies to the U.S.O., Centers downtown and on 87th street weekly. They found it easier to get students to bring eggs, butter, milk, etc., than to get them to weekly, bring individuafbakes, so, the Home Economics Department, under the direction of Mrs. Hazel Simon, send i500 cookies, baked in the Branch Kitchens, to the Centers. Another very important contribution to the War Effort is the work done by the Bowen Branch group of forty girls who give their services to the South Chicago Hospital. They are called Student Nurses Aides and they, under the direction and help of the Red Cross, do such jobs as carrying trays, taking care of patient-bathing, making beds, folding bandages, and giving room service when patients ring for such service. Bowen Branch has subscribed exceptionally well to the War Bond and War Stamp drives. They brought in 2000 pounds of steel and old iron and l03 pounds of copper and brass for the School drives. These are only a few of the many efforts our Branch is making to help in the GREAT WAR EFFORT. .ie Eighty seven ' t i 'I, fi. .-,Q Y vs .... A . Pig Mns. OLDI-lAM'S DIVISION TOP now. L.
