FOREWORD Today, along the shores of Lake Michigan, stands a fairy city within a city, entertaining thousands within its midst with the wonders of a century. The peak of progress which modern civilization has reached in the last few centuries has been concentrated in a comparatively small bit of territory and exhibited in a novel and revealing manner. The exposition of a Century of Progress held in Chicago in the summer of 1933 will long be remembered as an outstanding event by the visitors. Their memories will be of strangely beautiful buildings designed according to a new modernistic art scheme, of novel ideas in entertainmentg of exhibitions of progressg of strange people, languages, and customs, all combining to form a lasting impression of beauty and interest. Chicago's World's Fair exhibits the Progress of a Century, and the spirit lying behind it is identical with that spirit and courage that went to build. In a period of greatest privation when the entire world is suffering from severe financial depression and a resultant social and cultural depression, Chicago's I Will spirit is still existent and still faces and fights all obstacles confidently. Especially among the younger generation is that spirit apparent. They are ready and willing to receive the burden of the world on their shoulders and carry on to overcome conditions and reach new heights of progress. In the hands, brain, and spirit of the high school student of today lies the future of Chicago and the rest of the world. U3
