C. unit, commanded by an able staff of cadet omcers, has just completed the most successful year in its history. The Unit is organized as a company under the command of Captain Carl Julstrom with Lieutenant Barton Hufton as his adjutant. The R. O. T. C., participating in the Squad, Sec- tion, Platoon, and Company competitions has made a most remarkable showing. This is directly due to the fact that most of the cadet officers have co- operated to the fullest extent with the instructor, Sergeant V. Ackerman, in the intensive campaign of instruction which he initiated at the beginning of this past semester. Each cadet officer is given a special department in which he must instruct the cadets. In this way the cadets receive more special- ized training, and as a result Bowen's R. O. T. C. stands among the highest in the city. Special at- tention has been paid to extended order drill and rifle marksmanship, which heretofore have not been required. Due to this thorough intensive training one of the cadet officers, Edwin Sawyer, has been appointed to the position of cadet Major on the Brigade Staff. Bowen Band Bowen's R. O. T. C. Band, at the present time, consists of fifty members, an increase of four times the original number four years ago. Since their organization under the direction of Captain john Q. Steinbach, the band has accomplished many great feats. In june, 1928, they took second place in the annual band competition at Soldiers' Field, and took second place the following spring in an- other contest held at Stagg Field. Last April they gave their first semi-annual concert in the audi- torium, which, by the way, was well attended. Their second concert was held Thursday night, january 22 of this year. at which the new uniforms were formally introduced, and letters given to veteran Band members. The Band received their new uniforms of pur- ple and gold just before their last appearance, after a stupendous drive by the P. T. A. which had begun the previous year. Caps, belt cords, insignia, and capes are still lacking, however. Since the Band has received its new uniforms, they have played for many institutions and large organizations. The Home for Incurables, The Clean-Up Campaign, Kiwanis Club, a preliminary concert, Chicago jubilee, and several others were among those entertained. The Band also took part in the annual Band competition at Stagg Field and made a very fine impression upon listeners as well as judging critics. Pvge ninely-eigbl The Band letters previously mentioned were pre- sented to thirteen of the Band members, several of whom are now alumni. The letter is a B with a lyre in the center denoting music. Those who received letters were: Albin Zabka, Arnold John- son, Paul johnson, Gordon johnson, Lyle Tronjo, Delbert Bueschel, james Edmunds, Harold Bro- berg, David Crago, George Lorimer, Harry Beck- with, Walter Carlstedt, and Bill Urbanek. Letters were also presented to Band members at the concert which was given shortly following the Stagg meet. The commissioned oflicers in the Band this semester are Cadet Captain George Lorimerg Cadet lst Lieutenant Walter Carlstedt, who is also drum majorg Cadet 2nd Lieutenant john Rowell, Cadet 2nd Lieutenant Herbert Weidman, and Cadet 2nd Lieutenant George Halloran. The Band is increasing in number each year, and incidentally is participating in more events. These musicians have made wonderful progress since thirteen boys met once a week in a small room in the park four years ago. The present band of over fifty members meets every day in its own portable, receiving full credit each semester, and participat- ing in all events as a full-fledged school organi- zation.
