0 On 28 November, OWENS departed Malta to return to Naples for a tender availability from the. USS SHENANDOAH CAD-26j. After leaving Naples on 30 November, OWENS and USS BORDELON KDD-8815 proceeded in company to Izmir Turkey for a port visit from 3 to 7 December. In Izmir the ship was Med-Moored to the sea wall at Cumhuriyet Circle, very much in the midst of the city's port area. cu Af 5611 OWENS departed Izmir, on 7 December to continue operations with Task Group 60.2 in the Aegean Sea. On the evening of 8 December, the Task Group was diverted from its scheduled operations to go to the scene of the sinking of the Greek Ferry HERAKLION to join the search and rescue operations. The ferry was reported to have carried over 450 persons when it sank early that same morning, but the number of survivors already rescued was unknown. The ships spent the next twenty-four hours searching through an area heavy with debris from the disaster. OWENS si hted and recovered two of the twenty-one bodies that were picked up by ships of the Task Group, and transferred 8 . . them to the destroyer AETOS of the Royal Hellenic Navy. One bag Greek mail recovered by OWENS. Several SSXO gal drums sighted and sunk. Many empty life jackets and at least three empty liferafts sighted. 2. Count of bodies recovered l.6f7. 3X3 females 13f4 males. HHMS AETOS is in search area. 3. Press release with photos fwded ALUSNA ATHENS via cod flt 100B 4. Helo serch of advanest Island shore completed. Results negative. Shore line mostly very steep rock. 5. No further change. BT UNCLAS l.. Royal Hellenic Navy on scene SAR Commander has been directed to cease present SAR operations by his government with exception that two Hellenic ships are to remain on the scene until further notice. He has advised that assistance TG 60.2 no longer required. Therefore am terminating SAR ops. Will refuel task group this vicinity tonight. 2. Final count of remains recovered is 2lf3 as previously reported. Area was thoroughly searched today. Consider little liklihood of additional remains or debris of value still afloat in area. 3.
