The Second World Cruise of the USS James C. Owens was no exception. On the return voyage from the Far East, it seemed that every square inch of available space was stacked from deck to overhead with personal treasures! Each item was Worth infinitely more than the original purchase price because of the memories and association attached to each one. - Nevertheless, we acquired treasures of even greater worth than those bought with yen, centavos, shillings, lire, pesos and dollars. Long after these material reminders have been broken and discarded, we will cherish the priceless memories of the many friendships made with shipmates and with the people of many lands. It is hoped that in the pages which follow, you will discover and re-discover some of the greatest treasures of the cruise. . . reminders of some of the people you met, places you visited, good times you enjoyed, and shipmates with whom you worked. In this battle courageous men of Torpedo Squadron EIGHT, attached to the USS HORNET, played an inspiring part. One member of this famous squadron, LT. JAMES C. OWENS, JR. , had already distinguished himself in prior engagements, receiving the Navy Cross and a Presidential Unit Citation. Now, posthumously, another honor was bestowed upon him: a ship of the line to bear his name. Thus it followed that on 1 October 1944, a sleek new destroyer was christened at the Bethle- hem Steel Company's San Pedro Shipyards, The USS JAMES C. OWENS DD '776 . After a brief fitting-out period and subsequent shakedown off the coast of California, the OWENS was chosen for escort duty in the Pacific, screening heavier units and transports to Pearl Harbor, Eniwetok, Ulithi, and Okinawa. In July of 1945, she was assigned to a fast striking force of cruisers and destroyers which was dispatched to the China Sea, and there took part in the War's first major anti-shipping sweep in that area. ' The close of hostilities found the JAMES C. OWENS at Okinawa as a member of the FIFTH Fleet. Then, as part of the occupation force, she entered the homeland of the enemy at Wakayama. After brief duty: in Japan, the OWENS was ordered home, and transiting the Panama Canal, entered the Atlantic Ocean for the first time. For some time afterwards, the ship was used on training cruises off the East Coast. General assignments followed with her making appearances at Gal- veston, New Orleans, and Pensacola'for various holiday observances. - In June of 1946, the OWENS was attached to Destroyer Squadron TWO and later in company with Task Force 41, made a Mediterranean cruise, calling atAlgiers, Trieste, Venice and Taranto. Another cruise to the Mediterranean was made in June 1948. It was on this cruise that the OWENS first operated under the United Nations Flag, patrolling the waters off Palestine. The JAMES C. OWENS was plucked from the fleet in early 1950 and left idle at Charleston, S, C., in the Mothball Fleet , until September 1950 when the outbreak of warfare in Korea brought about the recommissioning of the OWENS. CDR ROBERT B, EARLY, USN, took command of the newly activated vessel and proceeded to organize the ship and crew for duty with the fleet. Having performed admirably in such operations as OXTAIL AND LANT FLEX 52, the OWENS was chosen for duty in the Far East, where for the second time, she operated under the United Nations Flag. During her tour of duty in the Far East in 1952 the OWENS operated with Task Force 77 QThe Carrier Task Forcejg and Task Force 95 fThe Blockade Forcej. While serving as commander of the .Task Element bombarding Songjin, the OWENS received sustained counterbattery fire from enemy shore installations which damaged the superstructure and resulted in personnel casualties. After the OWENS completed her 1952 tour of duty in the Far East, she returned to the States viathe Mediterranean with Destroyer Division 261, making a good-will tour enroute. Upon arrival in Norfolk, August 19, 1952, Commander John C. Spencer, USN took command of the OWENS, The ship was then returned to DesDiv 221, operating out of Norfolk until her over- haul period in February 1953. After refresher training at Guantanamo Bay Cuba during June and July 1953, the OWENS, to.. gether with the other ships of DesDiv 221 departed Norfolk 25 September 1953 for duty in the Far East, where she served for a third time under the U. N, Flag, Arriving in Yokosuka, Japan on 10 November 1953, the OWENS served, as on her previous tour' Offiutyv With Task Force 77, and Task Force 95. The Korean Armistice being in effect, the operations of the OWENSbecame that of on station training, and a precautionary force to insure against violation of the Armistice on the part of the enemy. On 11 March 1954, the OWENS and other ships of DesDiv 221 departed Yokosuka Ja f . , pan or the home port of Norfolk, returning by way of the Panama Canal. Stops enroute were made at Midway, Pearl Harbor, San Francisco Long Beach Balboa Ha d K - - in Norfolk on 1 May 1954. , , , Vana, an ey West' arrwmg .4 9' ALooK at the LOG-... 25 September 1953 27 September 1953 27 September 1953 5 October 1953 5 October 1953 8 'October 1953 11 October 1953 15 October 1953 15 October 1953 19 October 1953 19 October 1953 25 October 1953 26 October 1953 30 October 1953 3 November 1953 6 November 1953 10 November 1953 Departed Convoy Escort Piers, Norfolk, Virginia Arrived Bermuda 108007 Departed Bermuda 117001 Arrived in Gibraltar 110001 Departed Gibraltar Arrived in Naples, Italy Departed Naples Arrived Port Said, Egypt for Fuel Departed Port Said Arrived, Aden Protectorate Departed Aden Arrived in Ceylon Departed Ceylon Crossing the Line Ceremony Position: Lat. oo0oo'0o , Long. 105O41'00 Arrived in Manila Departed Manila Arrived at Yokosuka, Japan 10 November to 11 March 1954 - Naval Operations in the Far East 11 March 1954 16 March 1954 17 March 1954 20 March 1954 24 March 1954 29 March 1954 2 April 1954 3 April 1954 7 April 1954 17 April 1954 20 April 1954 23 April 1954 26 April 1954 26 April 1954 28 April 1954 1 May 1954 with visits to Yokosuka, Sasebo, Kure, J apang Okinawa, Inchon, Korea Departed Yokosuka, Japan for-the States Arrived at Midway Island Departed Midway Island Arrived at Pearl Harbor, T, H.
