Class Hlstor Our high school days are over Four years have passed and the hard work and fun of those years are only memories However here for a few brief moments we can make those days live again On September 5 1950 in an establlshment known as Mercersburg Hlgh School stood a group of forty seven boys and girls of mysterlous 1dent1ty Thetr arrival was not heralded by trumpets welcoming committees miracles or prophetic signs for the illustrious class of 1954 was on the bottom rung of the ladder and had a long climb ahead However the excitement of the new experience soon wore off The class settled down with plans of preparing themselves for the coming days for we had to fall in line with the other classes and elect class officers The winning personality of Clair Hembaugh gave him the presidency As his running mate in the position of vice president was oe Taylor Shirley Ward was elected class secretary while Linda Benchoff and Ray Hollenshead became the financial chairmen Mornings grew colder and our thoughts turned to the fall sports Soccer season arrived and two of our boys Ray Hollenshead and Benjy Kieffer proved them selves capable of making Coach Hoch s team Cheerleaders were selected to help develop the winning spirit in the Keystoners and we were overjoyed to find that five freshmen g1rls were victorious IH the try outs for the squad As the fall season progressed Coach Byron selected the girls el1g1ble for basket ball Among them were ten freshmen Th1s choice proved that cheerleading and Soon we were bustlmg about preparing for the annual operetta which was a success and we settled with a sigh back mto the monotony of classes and home work Spring appeared and once again excitement was in the air This time the May Day celebration was the cause This was the first year that we were to have repre sentatives m the court so we were quite excited The May Day fest1v1t1es were a success with our help and so our first year ended with a flourish September 1951 brought the Class of 54 back 1n a cloud of self confidence for no one is as important as a sophomore We were no longer Mercersburg High School students for Mercersburg and Lemasters had become a jointure We were now members of the ames Buchanan omt High School but we were still the outstanding class of the school A few members were missing from the group but the loss of old friends was off set by the novelty of a new girl from Germany Lilli the new student proved to be a great friend to all Everyone enjoyed her company and the help they could give her with her studies and her speech The sophomore school spirit began to express itself in both studies and act1v1 ties Nancy Sheffield led the way when she was chosen for a supporting role in the Junior Senior Play This was the first and only time that a sophomore proved capa ble of being 1n this annual play At the close of the fall season we once agam looked forward to Thanksgiving and Christmas vacations After the holidays most of our time was taken up 1n preparation for the oper etta Willie Naturally it was a success for once again a sophomore had the lead mg feminine role Page 28 O - 9 , , ' ' u n . n 1 , I - , . . , . , . . , , .
