At the end of the day, in a moment of dis- couragement and indecision, I look out of my window and see a bright light shining in my neighbors house across the fields. It immediate- ly calls to mind mans accomplishments in the world of science since the days of the kerosene lamp I hear the nl htly transport plane flying overhead, like a brr I feel small and inadequ ate Then I suddenly react, heart and soul, to the brilliance of a star that outshlnes all other lights I take courage I find inspiration in thoughts and feelings that transcend the ma terial things of life Next day, I awaken and go forward with new determination, new zeal, new goals in living I lose self in sacrifice and service I see a new day a new world Man is at peace with himself and his fellowmen I am you, young man, young woman, opening new books, and looking out upon new fields and new horizons I see the mountains ahead and move forward resolved to climb, as long as I have strength Dr Greenawalt When Tom Paine was a soldier in Wash lngton s ragged, starving army, he wrote the 1111 mortal lines, These are the times that try mens souls Today this nation faces a crisis that may be worse Inflation and Communism are the twin erils of our times The former diminishes our a lllfy to buy because money sinks ln value while prices rise, the latter IS a virus that may take generat1ons to overcome Communism thrives on disease, poverty, and hunger, and seizes every opportunity to expand by trickery or force There IS no alternative but to spend billions to arm ourselves and our allies Communism is many things, but most of all t IS the fanatic belief that individuals do not mat ter, that the government should be supreme, that liberty is a farce, and God is an mvention I have confidence that you of this genera tion can meet the crises of our times by courage, initiative, ambition, hard work, imagination and dogged determination Mr Russell Roddy , . 7 ' YI X ' I YI 1 . u . n . a u n , i 9 Page 6
