Guidance Mrs. Juanita Goldsborough Virginia State A T State University North Carolina College University of N.C.--G American University John D. Henry B.S. A T State Univ. M.S. A T State Univ. Two philosophies, that of the school and that of the guidance services of Greensboro City Schools, dictate the guidance program at James B. Dudley High School. The program is based upon the premise that each pupil is unique. His abilities, his capacity for growth and his worth as an individual is accepted. Guidance services are an integral part of the total educational program and are designed to help all pupils make adequate adjustments. These services assist the pupil in gaining self-understanding as a basis for solving his problems and for developing a plan for himself, which is consistent with his abilities, i nter¬ ests and aptitudes. Encompassing as they do the total child, these services must always be a part of the evolving and developing educational program. Gui¬ dance, all aspects of it, is a continuous process; and the responsibility for gui¬ dance services is shared by all who come in contact with the student from the time he enters until the time he leaves the school system. The program of guidance services aids in the optimal development of each pupil so that he may become a mature, happy, efficient and responsible person. It contributes to his development by helping to place him in the best possible school environment and helping him to develop self-understanding and self-ac¬ ceptance. Guidance, then, is concerned first with identification of student po¬ tential and, second, with the development of a program which will provide op¬ portunities for realization of that potential. Consequently, the concept of guidance services is dedicated to working co¬ operatively within the total educational program and with other resource agen¬ cies so that each pupil may gain maximum benefit from the educational program offered at Greensboro Dudley Senior High School. 66
