The words of Benjamin Franklin are particularly applicable and precise when they apply to the school activities of Mrs. Blanche Taylor Grant. She is always punct¬ ual, exacting, and very meticulous. She hurriedly enters the classroom to prepare for the day ' s work. Every geometrical concept, every proof, every theorem takes on a new and deeper meaning as she relates them to her students. Her presence is al¬ ways felt because she has such a sincere sense of dedication to the students of James B. Dudley Senior High School. Henry B.S. A T State Univ. M.S. A T State Univ. Two philosophies, that of the school and that of the guidance services of Greensboro City Schools, dictate the guidance program at James B. Dudley High School. The program is based upon the premise that each pupil is unique. His abilities, his capacity for growth and his worth as an individual is accepted. Guidance services are an integral part of the total educational program and are designed to help all pupils make adequate adjustments. These services assist the pupil in gaining self-understanding as a basis for solving his problems and for developing a plan for himself, which is consistent with his abilities, i nter¬ ests and aptitudes. Encompassing as they do the total child, these services must always be a part of the evolving and developing educational program. Gui¬ dance, all aspects of it, is a continuous process; and the responsibility for gui¬ dance services is shared by all who come in contact with the student from the time he enters until the time he leaves the school system. The program of guidance services aids in the optimal development of each pupil so that he may become a mature, happy, efficient and responsible person. It contributes to his development by helping to place him in the best possible school environment and helping him to develop self-understanding and self-ac¬ ceptance. Guidance, then, is concerned first with identification of student po¬ tential and, second, with the development of a program which will provide op¬ portunities for realization of that potential. Consequently, the concept of guidance services is dedicated to working co¬ operatively within the total educational program and with other resource agen¬ cies so that each pupil may gain maximum benefit from the educational program offered at Greensboro Dudley Senior High School. 66 Marvin Watkins--Dean of Boys B.S. Bennett College M.S. North Carolina College James R. Jarrell B.S. Winston Sal em Teachers Perdue University A T State University The Library Reaches Out The Library reaches out in many ways--for thinkers who seek fuel to fire their thinking, for hungry brains and idle ones that need satisfaction from the thoughts of others, for new ways to do old things. The depth and height and width of these three dimensions make a thing real. Our library collections represent many points of view, treat many subjects, and suit many tastes. What constitutes good library service?--it is not books alone. It is a complex combination of people and ideas. First, always, are the people: readers who find a new life in books; scholars who seek wisdom in the ideas of others and more accessible to those who need them. The ideas-- the other element in this compound--are not embodied only in type on paper but are found on films and tape and discs as well. It is the reach for what is beyond our placid daily routine, our placid unchallenged think¬ ing, that lifts us to new and greater dimensions of life and thought. Spurred by Jusserand ' s Admonition that ' the future is not in the hands of fate, but in ours; we must plan for times ahead. Our successors will expect this of us as we expected it from our predecessors. And our plans should be based on the faith that together the books, the hardware, the librarian, and the reader will light up the future, as they have illu¬ minated the past. Through modern advances in science and technology, the library has not limited its collection and service to books alone. Such audio-visual media as pictures (clipped from newspapers and magazines), reproduc¬ tions of art masterpieces, slides, filmstrips, motion p icture films, charts, graphs, maps, phonograph records, tape recordings, and trans- parancies are some of the vivid and concrete sharing of people ' s ideas of today. These media are useful to every phase of the school ' s curriculum as well as the extra-curricular activities. They provide knowledge for rec¬ reational and cultural purposes. 69 Mrs. Angeline Smith M.A. Benedict College Further study at University of Minnesota. Mrs. Barbara Wells M.A. Atlanta University Mrs. Luvenia Milling A.B. Talladega College Further study at University of Wisconsin. Stimulated by the intensive work done last year to satisfy the evaluation criteria, the English Depart¬ ment is expanding and improving in several direc¬ tions. During the summer the three teachers work¬ ing with NEA ' s Composition Project at Dudley, were part of an institute in advanced composition at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Aspects of composition tackled in the institute were logic, semantics, and transformational grammar. Among the plus values from the summer ' s experience are a broadening of teacher competency in eliciting more participation in class discussions (a MUST, preced¬ ing each writing assignment) by raising stimulating questions and serving more as a consultant--when called upon--rather than dominating the discussion. Again, aspects of writing are now tackled as such, rather than attempting the fused approach generally used. The new school year has seen the launching of an Honors English Program on all grade levels. These classes involve greater depth and enrichment than are possible in the regular English classes. Though, at present, there is but one section at each leavel, the program, hopefully, will grow and eventually become the feeder to Advanced Placement English, which is a college-level course for stu¬ dents with exceptional ability. Cooperative work between teachers of American literature and of United States History (one teacher in each area) is being done currently and informally. Perhaps bona fide team teaching and a course in the Humanities are in the making. Hopefully, this is so. At any rate, this is a new emphasis in this Department. Finally, several members of the Department are studying innovative techniques being presented as in-service training by North Carolina’s LINC. The study is under the caption Project Change and is being taught by one of North Carolina’s talented young writers, Miss Sylvia Wilkinson. The techniques being projected are of particular worth in achieving a versatility of approach to literature. Mrs. Nelle Coley, Chairman B.S. Bennett M.A. Columbia University M. Ed. When traffic fails to flow smoothly and efficiently, destruction, disfigurement, and death result which affect the lives of every American. The driver is the key to the solution of our traffic problems. Unfortunately, drivers are not as good as they should be. This is especially true of young drivers. Lack of training is the reason many motor vehicle operators do not drive efficiently and safely. Driver Education, then, is essential for making beginners good drivers and experienced drivers more competent. Efficient driving performances will bring about broad social advances and many personal benefits to each of us. It is obvious, therefore, that we all should become more actively concerned with traffic safety. 87 The Air Force Junior Reserve Officers ' Training Corps began its second year of operation at Dudley. Proudly sporting new lookascots of orange, yellow and red, the corps con¬ sists of 122 boys in the sophomore, junior and senior classes. Theory of Air¬ craft Flight, Propulsion Systems of Aircraft, Air Navigation and military Aero¬ space are a few of the wild blue yonder subjects offered. Increased extra curric¬ ular activities are contemplated. Not only did they take the pictures, but they de¬ veloped, printed and enlarged every picture on their own time and in the school dark¬ room . Of course, they began as rank amateurs. Basketball Dudley ' s basketball has so far posted a 2--9 record this year as they enter a rebuilding stage. Seniors dominated last year ' s team so that this is the first year of actual competition for such standouts as Kenny Tapp and Lawrence Williams. Kenny Tapp has had the most productive sea¬ son as he clipped the nets for 23 points against Parkland. Lawerence Williams had a high of 20 against Hillside. Williams is also the leading re- bounder. 227 There’s No Rebound Fellars Look’s Easy Doesn’t It Scorecard Hillside 70--55 Dudley 66--59 J. Coaches: Alton Swan, William H. Whites. Baseball As the Panther Baseball team changed conferences the going got a little rough for the team. This Year ' s edition of heavy batters and sticky gloves seems to be impres¬ sive . Back to continue their attacks on the diamonds are Claude Boone, last year ' s At¬ torney H. Frye MVP award winner, Garry Russell (pitcher 4 won 3 lost), Reginald Smith (outfielder), Reginald Booker (shortstop) Abner Donnell (2nd baseman) and Gar¬ cia Howard (pitcher). 229 The Dudley Wrestling Team is showing great improvement over last year’s team. We have a potential sectional champ in Ricky Smith the team captain. With the help of this year’s Sophomores and Juniors our record will improve next year . Ricky Smith Dudley ' s main hope in the re¬ gional ' s and possibly the State. Posting a record so far of 8 wins and 11 losses. Ray Crosby is a Ju¬ nior contender. He posted a record of 4 wins and 3 losses. He ' s a possible letterman. 230 Track 100 Yard Dash 880 Relay Team The Track Team, which will definitely show the loss of Speedy Jimmy Smith, seems to be making a strong effort to go all the way this year. R eturning are Lawrence Williams in the low hurdles and a member of the 880 relay team. Along with Williams will be Ray Crosby and Alton Rogers in the 440 quarter mile which will add to the strength of the team. In addition with these speed¬ sters will be Connie Herbin and Larry Patterson in the 100-200 yard dashes . Me - Kee and H . W. Holley per - formed quite competitively for their third year of Cen¬ tral Four-A conference. We had one player to go to the state (even though he was un¬ placed) to return this year. Again this year the lack of Golf enthusiasm seems to be the problem. Tennis Team--SITTING; Kim Poe, STANDING left to right, Waldo Martin, Leonard Lassiter, Mr. Higgins (coach) Lionel Hod¬ ges, George Bridges. Tennis Team The Tennis Team now in their 2nd year of competition seems to be coming along with a lot of improvement. This year Waldo Martin and Kim Poe will be fighting for the number one position. The only problem with this years team is the lack of experience. 234 -BanKIW tit- Patrons Ackms, Mrs. Doris Adams, Miss A, Faye Adams, Mrs. Amanda Adams, Mr. Billy Aikens, Mrs. Mary Aldridge, Mr. Roy Alexander, Mrs. Alexander, Mr. Daniel Alexander, Mrs. Phyllis Alexander, Mrs. Sabina Allen, Miss Betty jo Allen, Mrs. Christine Allen, Mrs. Dorothy Allen, Mr. Frank Allen, Mr. George Allen, Miss Rosemary Allen, Mr. Solomon Allison, Mr. £ Mrs. Alrnon, Miss Petty Alston, Mrs. Charolette Alston, Mr. David Alston, Mr. Harvey Amaker, Mrs. Joyce Amick, Mrs. Pauline Amos, Col.
