Growing in Change The words Dear Ole Dudley High have echoed through many decades and will continue to echo for many more. But the Dudley we once knew and loved has become a new Dudley that will change even more, and will be matched only by a newer Dudley yet to come. With this change has come: A new administration --which stands boldly in a noble tradition, but --which thinks decisively, moves deliberately, and acts wisely as it rushes forward to meet the challenge of a modern world A new faculty --which, equipped with new ideas and new techniques, has converted long, drawn out traditional methods of learning to clear, concise, modern methods --which explores the resources of recent minds to provoke the new and the unthought of --which challenges these minds to experiment, to test, to know and to understand An entirely new student, a product of an entirely new age, --who holds tradition in noble regard --who respects human dignity and human differences --who, eager to learn, seeks to master the precepts and ideas of a restless and uncertain time, a time where the old has become obsolete, and the new is yet undefined We salute thee, Dear Ole Dudley, with your new image and renewed strength. May you continue to grow and move forward with confidence to prepare the new generations for the eternal pursuit of excellence. 2 CONTENTS Dedication..........................................4 Admin ist ration....................................5 Faculty........................................... 17 Seniors.......................................■. . .37 Traditional ring................................38 Outstanding Seniors.............................40 Superlatives ...................................74 Juniors............................................77 Sophomores ........................................97 Queens............................................117 Organizations.....................................131 Notable Events....................................185 Sports, ..........................................207 Senior Profile....................................229 Patrons...........................................243 Sponsors . ..............•........................247 D To our beloved mentor, coordinator and compiler--George W. Gant--we proudly dedicate this, our second volume of his handiwork. Versatile, affable and enthusiastic, he has the un-common touch of making fun out of work. Small wonder, then, that he executes the multiplicity of jobs needed to make a volume like this a reality, without once losing his relaxed technique. In genuine esteem and appreciation do we dedicate the 1967 Panther Year book to Mr. Indefatigable Himself--George W . Gant. E D I C A T I O N 4 AD MIN 1STR A T10N P. J. Weaver Superintendent Our superintendent, P. J. Weaver, is most adept in his profession. It is his wish and his desire that this, our permanent record, he one of long remembrance to the student body and to the community at large. Success, growth and excellence is his ultimate hope for Greensboro Dudley Senior High School and its graduates. 6 7 ‘SUCCESS WORKS FOR YOU AFTER YOU HAVE WORKED FOR IT. Chester L. Bradley--Asst. Swann HIS horn, who don't EDUCATION SENIORS DUDLEY SENIORS CHOOSE TRADITIONAL RING Prior to the school year 1966-1967, each graduating class had selected its individual design for a class ring. As a result, the class rings differed from year to year. During recent years, however, students and faculty advisors discussed the possibility of selecting a standard class ring that would be appropriate, durable, beautiful and reasonable in price. In October 1966, the Class Jewelry Committee consisting of officers of the 1967 Graduating Class, the Principal, Faculty Advisors to the Committee and Class Jewelry representatives from Josten's made definite plans for the adoption of a standard class ring for graduates of the Dudley Senior High School. Josten's of Owatonna, Minnesota, which has served our school for many years, had its craftsmen design a special ring that met with our specifications . The ring was then displayed for the benefit of our student body as well as the remainder of the faculty. After a few minor changes were made, we adopted the ring that is being displayed on the facing page. 38 SENIORS SELECT TRADITIONAL RING 1967 39 OUTSTANDING Leadership James Russell v Academic French Cynthia Richardson Richard Fields Spanish Thelma McDowell Service Linde 11 Mills Academic Gail Yates Academic Beverly Lanier Business Fxlucation Janice Ingram 40 SENIORS Service Athletic Fred Avery' Reginald Trip 1 in Lawrence Clanton Service Aaron Rogers Academic Edwin Clover Linda Alexander Patricia Alexander Val Alexander Joseph Allen 42 Shelia Barksdale Sandra Barfield Vivian Barrett Beverly Beard Ruby Blount Claude Boone Eva Bracken Larry Bratcher Bobby Bryant James Bullard Barbara Burnett Rosalind Byers 45 A Idea n Clinard Sabra Cochran Luther Cofield Ella Copeland 46 Carol Daniels Dwain David Gwendolyn Davis James L. Eva is a senior and has aspirations for college. We think she will make it. Gary Eugene Gant, son of Mr. Mrs. George W. Gant, won his title by raising $86.00 in the Yearbook Fund Drive. He is a sophomore who is getting the good ole Dudley High Spirit early. He told us that he could have gotten much more money if he had not been playing football in the evenings. What a fine effort!! MISS PATRON no OUR STUDENT COUNCIL-OR The Student Council, composed of representation from each class, has the important role of passing bills pertaining to student body activities. One of the tasks that this organization undertook was the selection and crowning of a Homecoming queen. The Council sponsored two elections one in the early fall, and a more exciting and prolonged campaign in the spring for school officers. At Thanksgiving the Council collected donations from students and distributed bountiful Thanksgiving baskets to various families in the community. In a similar manner, the Council gave gifts to each member of the janitorial staff at Christmas. Dudley Modern Dance Group has been in existence for ten years. Under the direction of Miss Georgenne E. Dye, its twenty-seven members learn to express themselves with grace and charm through dancing. The dance group enables talented young ladies to discipline not only their bodies, but their ethics and personalities. The girls have to put into action unselfishness, loyalty, and school pride if they are to have harmonious group relations. Their ability to put aside thoughts of personal fame results in worthwhile experiences for the audience and performers. The school is definitely proud of this artistic contribution to the school, community and state. Above all, it is especially proud of the dedicated young ladies who have made the dance a favorite cultural pastime for Dudley students. 180 181 THE PEP CLUB Remember . . . Beep, Beep. Ah, Beep. TRADITIONAL SCENES The Blue C Our retired school transportation was purchased around 1948. Sinci that time, it has served dutifully our sports, dramatics, debating, and music departments. Through the mechanics department head, the bus was kept on the road for 18 long, hard, years. The bus, known to the line of student bodies since its beginning CAREER AT DUDLEY as the Blue Goose, was purchased from the Re-harbcth Methodist Churcf) for $800. ABOUT D.H.S. CAMPUS By retired Although the Goose was aged when we purchased it, its breakdowns were few. The most memorable one. I'm sure, to Mr. Macomson and the players at that time, was when the Goose conked out on High Point's road-side, by way of Concord. The bus was towed in at 7:00 A.M. the next morning. This was a long remembered, laughed about, as well as talked about experience. The Blue Goose travelled extensively throughout North Carolina. Its first trip was to Winston-Salem in 1948. Its last taken in 1966 was to Burlington. Asheville was the Gooses' longest trip, and the War Memorial Stadium, her shortest. Repairs were done on the Goose to keep her going, but none of these were because of accidents. So, as the Goose retires, her image is, and always will be a cherished memoir in all Dudleyites’ hearts. 187 FACULTY DINNER WONDERFUL! Furcron--Director of Athletics The athletic staff extends thanks and appreciation to the many patrons of our athletic games. Thanks for your interest and help in supporting the Dudley High School Athletic Program. The extent to which we are able to reach the desired goals which we have set up for the Dudley interscholastic program depends largely upon the interest, attention, and contributions shown and made by the community. Through our athletic program we are trying to provide a wholesome environment for our youth whereby they might gain valuable experiences that will make life more meaningful. We hope that the Dudley athlete develops dependability, cooperation, perseverance, endurance, courage, a healthy body, emotional stability, sportsmanship, and an appreciation for academic excellency. 206 -1966-67 STATE CO-CIIAMPIONS- FIRST ROW: C. That year we were State Runner-up. The team showed great desire, determination, and cooperation. The coaching staff thought that the togetherness displayed by the team was one of its major landmarks. Reginald Triplin set a school record by catching five touchdown passes in one game. Senior tackle Harvey Clanton was also outstanding for the Panthers. Both Reginald Triplin and Harvey Clanton made the All-State Team. Stahle Vincent represented the other half of the record; he threw the passes to Triplin. The Panthers are looking forward to a good year in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association next year. Several outstanding juniors arc returning: Albert ( rawford, Stahle Vincent. Frank Davis, James Smith, Robert Williams, Rifton Daniels, Charlie Howard, Murdock Brothers, Danny Bethea, and several others. 208 Kickoff . . . Practice . . . Halftime . . . Band ... Hughes (Mgr) The 1965-66 baseball team came close to making it three straight State Championships; they had to settle lor runner-up. Ligon of Raleigh won the final game. 1966-67 should be a year of rebuilding with so many stalwarts lost through graduation. Austin, R. Fields, D. Bratcher The Panthers started off the 1966-67 season running. Elmer Austin, Stahle Vincent, Reginald Triplin. Elmer Haygood, Walter Johnson. Aaron Rogers, and LaMonte Armstrong combined to give the Panthers nine wins out of the first twelve games. The team has great speed and utilizes the fast break to average over 75 points per game. The cagers arc hoping to go all the way this year. Speed and shooting ability make up the long suit for the Panthers. The starting five, led by Elmer Austin, arc shooting in the double figure. The team moves the ball well and is approaching the average made by the great Panther team that played during the Hudson era. Richard Fields, Louis White, David Bratcher, Ted Shoffner, Robert Haith, and Michael Revel gave the starters all the competition they could handle. 222 ACTION IN BASKETBALL Coach has finished talking before the game starts and sends as bench watches patiently waiting chance to get in.
