AFJ Academically oriented, Air Force Junior ROTC is primarily designed to enable high school stu¬ dents to become better informed citizens on the challenges and opportunities of aerospace. In addi¬ tion, it is intended to develop leadership capabili¬ ties in the student and to introduce him to the magnitude of the national defense effort. It is also designed to promote habits of orderliness, personal honor, self-reliance, and discipline. Each school has a retired Air Force officer as an instructor and may have one or more retired NCOs serving as assistant instructors. 40

Physical Education The late President John F. Kennedy was never more correct when he said that physical education is one ot the most vital parts in a child’s education. . ROTC Air Force ROTC was authorized when dent signed into law the ROTC Vitalization Act of 1964 (Public Taw 88-647) in October of that year. The first major legislation affecting ROTC since 1916, the Vitalization Act modernized the colle¬ giate ROTC program and was the basis for the Ju¬ nior ROTC program. Previously only the Army had a high school ROTC program. Now all three ser¬ vices were to have it. Junior ROTC is basically a three-year program, but can be expanded to four years to accomodate military institutes. Each new school introduces the course at the 1 Oth grade level. 41
