Whites B.S.—A T State University Driver Education is a unique and vital part of education and serves as a building block to the total learning process. The objectives aim to develop citizenship, worthy home membership, and wise use of leisure time. The State of North Carolina was wise when it introduced driver education in the public school systems. Here, under the guidance of three capable instructors, the student is provided with actu¬ al “behind-the-wheel” instruction. Of course, this training is preceded by classroom instruc¬ tion. 38

AFJ Academically oriented, Air Force Junior ROTC is primarily designed to enable high school stu¬ dents to become better informed citizens on the challenges and opportunities of aerospace. In addi¬ tion, it is intended to develop leadership capabili¬ ties in the student and to introduce him to the magnitude of the national defense effort. It is also designed to promote habits of orderliness, personal honor, self-reliance, and discipline. Each school has a retired Air Force officer as an instructor and may have one or more retired NCOs serving as assistant instructors. 40
