Victory !! That ' s Our Cry N. Withrow, G. Scales, D. Howell, L. Young, C. Withrow, M. Young, D. Ellison, B. Thornhill Have you really noticed those beautiful, energetic girls with the sore throats and scarred knees, who lead us in cheering during the basketball and football games? These girls help the athletic teams immensely by adding moral support to the fighting Panthers. Under the direction of Miss G. E. Dye, these girls have won a place in the hearts of athletes, students and fans alike. We salute the Dudley Cheerleaders. We are the Mighty Panthers!! Dudley cheerleaders take time out to pose. 237

Baseball Team Kneeling: G. Howard, K. Bennett, H. Murdock, F. Wright, J. Troxler, A. Jessup. Back Row: L. Williams, L. Boone, R. Smith, H. Morehead, M. Hall, J. Guy, D. Mitchell, J. Huntley (Mgr.). Heavy bats and sticky gloves seem to be always on the Dudley Baseball team. The team last year posted a 15-2 record. The team advanced to the state playoffs but lost to E. E. Smith of Fayettville in the semi-fi¬ nals. This year the team will have many lettermen returning. They are Stahle Vincent (Third base average .579), John Troxler (Center field average .266), Freddie Wright (Center average .377), Alphonso Jessup (Outfield average .407), and Reginald Smith (Short Stop average .382). But the team will greatly miss last year’s MVP (Attorney H. Frye Award Winner) Finwood Thompson a pitcher that produced a 6-1 record. To take his place W. H. Whites and A. F. Swann are grooming a fine looking prospect, Garcia Howard. 236

Jimmy Smith Speedy Jimmy Smith The fastest man on Dudley’s campus or any other campus, for that matter, is Jimmy Smith. Here are some of his track accomplishments. 1. In the triangular meet at William Penn, he won the 220 yard dash in 22.4. 2. He won the 220 yard dash in the city—country track and field meet in 21.9. 3. In his first trip to the state meet, he placed fourth in the 220 yard dash. 4. Last year he won the W.A. Golds- borough MVP award for track and field. We may expect big things from Jim Smith in the world of track. Golf Team The Dudley Golf Team un¬ der the direction of J. A. McKee and H. W. Holley per¬ formed quite well in their second year of competition in the central Four-A. In the Sectional Meet of the North Carolina High School Ath¬ letic Association held at Blair Park, High Point, the Pan¬ thers lack of experience eliminated them from further competition in the State Playoff. Our leading four¬ some compiled such course scores as listed: Joe Meadows-84. Melvin Thompson-88, Jerry Gregory-88, Billy Covington—92. The golf team participated in three meets during the season. They won two. Joseph Meadows was the team low medalist on the season with an 84 average. He also won the J.C. Tarpley MVP award for the year. 238
