Athletic Department W,J. Furcron 9 Athletic Director This should be an occasion for me to say something to you about the Dudley athletic program. However, instead I would like to pay tribute to just one of our athletic groups; not to shun the others, but because of the greatness of this particular squad. This group is the 1967-68 football team; the team of teams. The team didn’t have the best won and lost record in the history of teams, but I do believe that if we were to compute the averages it would have the best record in dedication to assignment and responsibility, the best in loyalty, the best in attitude, the best in sportsmanship, the best in making contributions “be¬ yond the call of duty.” The team was acclaimed by many as the best drilled and the most disciplined high school team they had ever witnessed. On behalf of the football coaching staff 1 would like to take this opportunity to say to you, the members of this mythical team, that we will always remember you as the guiding light and standard bearer that other Dudley athletes should follow. To say that we enjoyed working with you will not suffice. The sorrow brought by your absence next year, the next, and the next, may be somewhat expiated in that we’ll know that wherever you are, you will be making a contribution to some worthy cause. We extend best wishes to all of you. 224 a

Football Team The Panthers of Dudley ended the season with a 7-2-2 record. This was the team labeled as the most ex¬ plosive offensive threat in the state. The Panthers amassed 3,714 yards in the total offense during the year. They also scored 280 points during the course of the season while their opponent s scored 130. While the offensive unit played the part of a sparkling explosion, the defensive team was an example of a diamond in the rough. The defensive unit received little publicity but they served as the foundation of the team. The Charlie Howard, Rifton Daniels, Herbert Jackson, Albert Crawford combo was too much for most teams to handle. Many times they were in the opposing backfield before the ball was. And that great offensive unit was something. It was capable of scoring at any time and from any place on the field. They averaged 13 first downs per game and they also averaged 25 1 yards rushing and 121 yards passing per game. The offensive unit was also aided by the great place-kicking of John “Duck” Guy who is becoming the best place-kicker in Dudley history as he accounted for 24 points via PAT’s and one FG. Big Games of the season were the 19-7 victory over Grimsley, the 51-0 victory over Carver, the 41-14 victory over Walter Williams, and the 34 to 12 victory over Page. The Panthers tied Smith for the Central 4-A conference’s championship but was defeated by Fike High of Wilson in the state playoffs, 21-14. We left the old NCHSAC conference as co-champs and we still played the part of champions in the Central Four A ranks. Dudley was truly one of the most feared gridiron teams in the state. 226
