LAI I W r IP 15 Dedication “The highest of distinctions is service to others.” King George, IV Rarely enough are we able to express our sincere appreciation to those among us who have become such a vital part of our lives that perhaps we develop a natural ten¬ dency to take them for granted. This may be easily understood if that person may be relied on to be a capable leader, a faithful worker, and a true friend. For his years of work with and for the students of Dudley High School, we wish to express our often unspoken gratitude to a highly distinguished man— Chester L. Bradley 16 F. J. College Home A closer liaison between the home and school might be more pronounced in the Home Economics Department than in any other single department in the school. Emphasis is given to working together 36 Economics democratically, to establish values, to making intelligent choices, to managing resources-time, energy, and money, and to developing homemaking abilities as well as skills for gainful employment. Mrs. Vashti Goodman, Chairman B.S.—A T State University 37 mmsm Driver Education Alton L. Swann B.S.-A T State University Herman W. Holley B.S.-A T State University William H. Whites B.S.—A T State University Driver Education is a unique and vital part of education and serves as a building block to the total learning process. The objectives aim to develop citizenship, worthy home membership, and wise use of leisure time. The State of North Carolina was wise when it introduced driver education in the public school systems. Here, under the guidance of three capable instructors, the student is provided with actu¬ al “behind-the-wheel” instruction. Of course, this training is preceded by classroom instruc¬ tion. 38 Physical Education The late President John F. Kennedy was never more correct when he said that physical education is one ot the most vital parts in a child’s education. Dudley’s Physical Education program meets the needs of every student through team, individual and dual sports, rhythmic and gymnastic activities, and interscholastic sports. Jonathan A. Furcron B.S.—Hampton Institute M.S.-Pennsylvania State 39 AFJ Academically oriented, Air Force Junior ROTC is primarily designed to enable high school stu¬ dents to become better informed citizens on the challenges and opportunities of aerospace. In addi¬ tion, it is intended to develop leadership capabili¬ ties in the student and to introduce him to the magnitude of the national defense effort. It is also designed to promote habits of orderliness, personal honor, self-reliance, and discipline. Each school has a retired Air Force officer as an instructor and may have one or more retired NCOs serving as assistant instructors. 40 . ROTC Air Force ROTC was authorized when dent signed into law the ROTC Vitalization Act of 1964 (Public Taw 88-647) in October of that year. The first major legislation affecting ROTC since 1916, the Vitalization Act modernized the colle¬ giate ROTC program and was the basis for the Ju¬ nior ROTC program. Previously only the Army had a high school ROTC program. Now all three ser¬ vices were to have it. Junior ROTC is basically a three-year program, but can be expanded to four years to accomodate military institutes. Each new school introduces the course at the 1 Oth grade level. 41 Mrs. Julia Richmond, Chairman A.B.—North Carolina College M.A.—North Carolina The Music Department Music courses and activities are enjoyed by many Dudleyites. The curriculum provides for experiences in band, orchestral, choral and general music. Pep and Jazz bands provide entertainment for athletic events. The band, orchestra and choral society present programs and concerts and participate in contests and fes¬ tivals. Highlights of the music department are the Spring Concert which features the crowning of Miss Dudley High and the Greensboro City-Wide Festivals. It should provide an opportunity for all students through their knowledge, skills, attitudes and accomplishments to become more useful members of the home and com¬ munity, more intelligent consumers, and more valuable citizens ot our country. Its aims and objectives are: 1. To develop in each student a measure of skills and knowledge in the use of the common tools, ma¬ chines, materials, products, and processes of industry. 2. To develop skills in the production and use of sketches, schematics, graphs, diagrams, and draw¬ ings. 3. To develop discriminating consumers of goods and services. 4. To develop wise and worthy use of leisure time. 5. To develop an understanding of the world of work and abilities of students to make occupational choices in terms of their interest, aptitudes, and capacities. 46 Special Education As in every realm of education the aim of the special teacher is two-fold to aid the student in realizing his abili¬ ties and to aid him in developing his abilities in the direction of a future job. Mrs. Barbara Chavis B.A.—Bennett College Mrs. Joyce Wagner B.A.—Converse College Art Department The Art Department of the James B. Dudley Senior High provides varied enrich¬ ing art experiences for the students through their creative work with a variety of art me¬ dia and materials. The studio work attords students an understanding of the principles of design, helps to develop an appreciation for art and to broaden their knowledge of art history. The art program is elective and is organ¬ ized in four sequential courses. Students in the advanced courses may prepare to con¬ tinue in art after graduation. SIGN l r ACf ft ft© Pride and confidence mingle with uncertainty as the class of 1968 comes to graduation exercises. Friends and relatives come to say congratulations’’ and to wish us well. After the good wishes we are left on our own, armed with the countless things we have learned and encouraged by the spirit of pro¬ gress instilled in us at Dudley. Patrol members are a select group of responsible Dudley citizens. Chosen by a faculty committee, patrol applicants are given a period of training during their junior year and begin serving during their senior year. The Safety Patrol has as its main concern the safety of all Dudley Students. Patrol members can be found at the ends of every hall during class changes. Their job is to keep students moving quickly and quietly to class. Recognizable by their white belts, they can also be found in the cafeteria during lunch time where they discourage would-be-line breakers. 142 A sports program for girls of extra-curricular activities is sponsored by the Physical Education Department. Sports days and invitation activities are organized. Awards (inexpensive tokens) are presented as a distinguishing work of achievement. This is done in accordance with the policies of the association. Purpose: To offer a variety of sports for partic¬ ipation that will contribute toward development of girls by organizing after school activities in physical education. Officers: Deborah Graves President Deborah Ellison Vice-Pres. Barbara Lyles Secretary Gwendolyn Carter Planning Committee: Treasurer Gloria Poteat Joan Goode Shelby Graves Tervilia Reaves Dianne Ellison Advisors: Mrs. L. D. Elarris Miss G. E. Dye Chairman 143 Marshals Render Valuable Services The lights are up; the doors are open; the play, the dance, the music, the coronation—in short—the pub¬ lic program at Dudley is about to begin. If you pick your favorite, or choose them all, and head this way, you are certain to be greeted and made comfortable by a Dudley Marshal. This is our sophisticated name for the school ushers. We picked this name because we are a sophisticated group! We are in the focus of the spotlight always, and we do not mind, because we are always prepared tor close scrutiny. Our grooming is tops: clean bodies, immaculate dress, a crisp and just-right uniformity. We are never over-done, tor we maintain an easy and acceptable image. Since walking is our business, we do this with dignity, beginning with good posture, and following through with a briskness that gets our job done with dispatch. Incidentally and p erhaps accidentally (though not really so) we are a good looking group! Would you like to know our secret? Good grooming, immaculate clothing, and bodies that don’t slouch will make anyone good to behold. Come to Dudley as often as you like. We love having you, for service is our business. 144 OFFICERS President . Louis White Vice-President.Robert Haith Secretary.Mildred Thornhill Asst. They work hard, spend long hours ' in rehearsal, and try to give their best in performances for the student body and the community. Their work in drama helps them grow in poise, self-confidence, and in self-realization. They contribute much to the life of the school and, in doing so, find their work stimulating and rewarding. 147 m ffi mss . ■ ?v. | 1If m mm ' Jfe i J Greenboro Youth Council The Greensboro Youth Council, known as the GYC is a Junior City Council. It is composed of represen¬ tatives from each high school. The purpose of the GYC is to serve the youth of the city. The GYC acts as a line of communication of the youth’s needs and desires to the adults of the city. 148 Junior Achievement Club In this picture of a Junior Achievement Company is at work. This is the Carolina Western Company. It is made up of students from different high schools in the city. They are discussing a product which will be made and sold. Junior Achievement began in 1919 in Springfield, Massachusetts when Horace A. Moses, then president of Straithmore, acted on his belief that urban youngsters could profit from a kind of “Learn by doing” ex¬ perience that 4-H Clubs gave farm youth. Today there are more than 6,500 JA companies being organized each fall in hundreds of towns and cities in the United States and Canada. In JA you will get “on the job” experience, you have a chance for personal development, and for in¬ creasing leadership, ability. Many regional, local, and national awards are given in recognition of continu¬ ing their education. Junior Achievement gives you a head start-its up to you to take the initiative and make that head start count! 149 Varsity Club Monogram, these athletes have banded together to further promote athletics in the school. This affords the varsity men an opportunity to have a voice in the administration of athletics. By exhibiting good fellowship, fostering good sportsmanship, and encouraging the development of a proper school spirit among all the students of the school they have become a valuable part of the Dudley family. Certainly it is a task too big for one person or even for one class; we have frequently asked for and have always received assistance in our ef¬ forts. That’s why we want to say Thank You — To Mr. Brown for his cooperation and encour¬ agement, to our teachers for their help in picture¬ taking, sales, subscriptions, and patrons. Cadet Lt. Col. Simmons is top student commanding officer. An Honor Roll student and active in campus organiza¬ tions, Simmons interests cover a wide area, ranging from sports to art. Albert Crawford has distinguished himself as a scholar during his years at Dudley. A finalist in the National Merit Scholarship competition, Crawford is a regular on the Honor Roll. Outstanding in sports, he was selected for the All-City Football Team. Interested in the arts as well as the sciences, Albert writes creatively and plans to major in math at N. C. State University. Beverly Bradshaw can be found in the Principal’s of¬ fice every day during her free time. A valuable assistant to administration, faculty, and students, she is always busy delivering reports, and notices and seems to thrive on this bee-like existence. ■9BS KKwSSsSjw 200 the Class of 1968 Harold Murdock is the epitome of action. Aside from his gridiron chores, he finds time to serve as a Student Council member, and Presi¬ dent of the Dudley Jaycees. A member of the NHS and a Cadet Major in the AFJROTC, Mur¬ dock has the honor of a nomination to an appointment to the Air Force Academy. Romell Hedrick possesses an explosive combination of talent, good looks, and personality. A songbird of merit, she has sung professionally for several years and is a member of Dudley’s choir. This fall she represented Dudley as feature singer in a group appearing on the “Our Side” television show. Ambitious as well as talented, Romell seems destined for success. If you see her everytime you turn around, it’s because Christine Cockerham is one of the busiest girls on campus. Though she has had the enor¬ mous responsibility of the editorship of PANTHER 1968, Christine has managed to keep up her scholastic average, perform with the dance group, and the Majorettes. Stable Vincent’s athletic prowess has won him honors on the football field, the basketball court, and the baseball dia¬ mond for the past three years. His intellectual prowess matches his athletic skills and innumerable colleges and universities are trying to win his hand for next year. 201 Gwenella Lamberth is outstanding for hav¬ ing maintained a B average, being elected Vice-President of the National Honor Society, Chairman of the Beautification Committee, President of her homeroom, and executive member of the Student Council. In addition to these achievements she has a warm person¬ ality and fine love of her fellow students that makes her a popular as well as brilliant stu¬ dent. Herbert Jackson is distinguished as having gained rank of AFROTC Cadet Major because of his superior qualities of intellect, character, per¬ sonality, and leadership ability. Herbert’s easy going manner has won him a firm place in the hearts of his fellow students, and marks him as a young man who is bound to succeed. Ronald Tatum’s administrative and lea¬ dership talents have underscored his poten¬ tial as an organizer and leader. He has been a member of the Patrol Force, the Octagon Club, and plans to further his education either at A T State University or Guilford College. Brice Smith’s ambition to become a lawyer and his lo¬ quacity seem to go hand in hand. In the summer of 1967 he participated in the Elks’ Oratorical Contest in Los Angeles, California, where he won a $1,000 scholarship. He was also in the World Peace Through World Law Study Speech Contest which took him to Washington, D. C. and and to the United Nations in New York City. Although Brice participates in numerous extracurricular activities, he remains an excellent student and holds the highest possi¬ ble student position—President of the Student Council. 202 - Youth of the Month , i, John Ann Washington was named Youth of the Month of November. However, instead I would like to pay tribute to just one of our athletic groups; not to shun the others, but because of the greatness of this particular squad. This group is the 1967-68 football team; the team of teams. The team didn’t have the best won and lost record in the history of teams, but I do believe that if we were to compute the averages it would have the best record in dedication to assignment and responsibility, the best in loyalty, the best in attitude, the best in sportsmanship, the best in making contributions “be¬ yond the call of duty.” The team was acclaimed by many as the best drilled and the most disciplined high school team they had ever witnessed. On behalf of the football coaching staff 1 would like to take this opportunity to say to you, the members of this mythical team, that we will always remember you as the guiding light and standard bearer that other Dudley athletes should follow. To say that we enjoyed working with you will not suffice. This was the team labeled as the most ex¬ plosive offensive threat in the state. The Panthers amassed 3,714 yards in the total offense during the year. They also scored 280 points during the course of the season while their opponent s scored 130. While the offensive unit played the part of a sparkling explosion, the defensive team was an example of a diamond in the rough. The defensive unit received little publicity but they served as the foundation of the team. The Charlie Howard, Rifton Daniels, Herbert Jackson, Albert Crawford combo was too much for most teams to handle. Many times they were in the opposing backfield before the ball was. And that great offensive unit was something. It was capable of scoring at any time and from any place on the field. They averaged 13 first downs per game and they also averaged 25 1 yards rushing and 121 yards passing per game. The offensive unit was also aided by the great place-kicking of John “Duck” Guy who is becoming the best place-kicker in Dudley history as he accounted for 24 points via PAT’s and one FG. Big Games of the season were the 19-7 victory over Grimsley, the 51-0 victory over Carver, the 41-14 victory over Walter Williams, and the 34 to 12 victory over Page. The Panthers tied Smith for the Central 4-A conference’s championship but was defeated by Fike High of Wilson in the state playoffs, 21-14. We left the old NCHSAC conference as co-champs and we still played the part of champions in the Central Four A ranks. The Dudley Wrestling Team has overcome many odds to post a fine record of 4 wins in 12 months in spite of the fact that they had to give us 10-15 points because of the failure to enter wrestlers in the 103 pound, 199 pound and the unlimited weight divisions. The victories came over such teams as: Atkins, Ben L. Smith, and Walter Williams or Burlington. The leading wrestler is Alfred Bost who wrestles in the 114 pound division. He has a record of 8 wins and 4 losses. Bost also serves as the Captain of the team with Rifton Daniels and Curtis Murdock serving as co¬ captains. Osbey Turman (95 pound division), David Williams (140 pounds) and Curtis Murdock (145 lbs.) have been impressive during the season, posting 7-5 records. The wrestlers are diligently practicing wrestling techniques in preparation for the tough competition ex¬ pected in the District Meet at Walter Williams High on February 16-17. If a wrestler finishes 1-2-3 in his weight division he is eligible to wrestle in the State Tournament February 22-23 at Parkland High School. The scoring system in wrestling is listed: Pin 5 points Decision—3 points Forfeit—5 points Disqualification—5 points 239 i f f ADVERTISING Patrons Adams, Mr. Walter Albony, Mr. B. W.
