I am sure the permanent record of the year will be treasured by the student body of the Dudley Senior High School. I commend you on your efforts and wish you every success in producing a Yearbook of the highest caliber. P. J. Weaver Superintendent 22 R. Thorpe Jones Assistant Superintendent for Business 23 Our Principal . . — F. J. Brown — While Franklin J. Brown takes over the reigns of responsibility as principal of James B. Dudley High School, let us pause and look at the man whose shoulders have been burdened with such a tremendous task . . . He brings with him a record of service that is the envy of many of us. His rich experiences in the classroom and in the capacity of assistant to the principal cannot help but benefit him in this his greatest task. His concern for mankind, as has been exemplified in the community and here at school, gives a sense of belonging and a desire to move forward. His great leadership ability encourages us to respond courageously to the need, opportunities, and responsibilities of our age. He was born to be a leader. 24 . His Assistant C. L. Bradley Chester L. Bradley, Dudley’s new assistant principal, has had rich experiences in public school life in North Carolina. Three cities, Greenville, Sedalia and Greensboro have been enriched by his presence in their classrooms. As a Biology instructor, he was well liked by his pupils and regarded by his superiors as a top flight teacher. As a football coach, he produced a record that is, to this day, the envy of many. His one desire, to be kept in touch with youth -- their problems and achievements, is sufficient to qualify him for the task that befronts him. 25 Mr. Chester L. STANDING: Walter Johnson, Rathcl Thompson, Elmer Haygood, Aaron Rogers, Coach, Mr. W. J. Furcron. The school year 1964-65 left the Panther Cagers with a 15-7 record which was considerably below their .800 won and lost percentage record established over the last s6ven years. This year for the first time ever the Dudley basketball team started the year off without a letterman on the squad. Nathaniel Sanders had to fill the shoes of the likes of William Gilmer, freshman sensation at A. T. College. Junior Walter Johnson, fresh up from the Junior Varsity, had to assume the role of floor general without any previous experience. The squad learned quickly and began to show promise early in the season. 166 FOOTBALL TEAM FIRST ROW: Lewis Walker, Samuel Sharpe, Herbert Jackson, Reginald Triplin, Capt. , Frank Johnson, Capt., SrMi?1 i1?”?? Jerome Cant, Nathaniel Sanders. SECOND ROW: Asst. Mgr. John Hughes, William Lee. Robert Williams, William Nelson, James Garner, Frank Davis, John Trexler, Charlie Howard, Melvin McNair Phillip Staples, Asst. Mgr. , Claude Boone. THIRD ROW': Coach Furcron, Melvin Pennix, Wayne Neal, Bobby Bryant. Harold Murdock, James Russell, Melvin Thompson, James Smith, John Marks, Jacob Chapman, Clyde Boone. Mgr. , Aaron Rogers. FOURTH ROW: Freddie Wright, William Richmond, Stable Vincent, Bernard Harris, Jesse Chambers, Paul Nichols, Rifton Daniels, Asst. Mgr. , Jeffrey Evans. Dudley was blessed with the finest crop of sophomores in a decade. Injuries prevented the Panthers from having a winning season. Bright spots during the season, along with good looking sophomores, was the homecoming victory of 21-6 over highly touted New Bern and the 30-6 shillacking on Second Ward. The victory over Charlotte settled a three way tie in the Western Division, giving Carver the nod over West Charlotte and Second Ward. Phillip Staples played end, halfback and ended the season at fullback. He picked up over 100 yds. in three games at the fullback position. Frank Johnson was outstanding during the whole season and was selected on the All-State Team in addition to playing in the Shrine Bowl game. Jerome Gantt also made the Shrine Bowl game. Junior Reginald Triplin did an outstanding job at end and should develop into an outstanding athlete his senior year. 167 The Intramural Program at Dudley is a valuable phase of the regular Physical Education Program, pur Program is geared toward the abilities and skills of the entire student body and consists of voluntary participation in games, sports and other activities. It is a laboratory period for sports and other activities whose fundamentals have been taught in the Physical Education class. It offers competition for the entire student body, the strong and the weak, the skilled and the unskilled, the big and the small. Outstanding basketball players from the Senior, Junioi and Sophomore Intramural Basketball Leagues: STANDING: Aaron Rogers, James Smith, Frederick Cornelius, Dwight Earle, Bernard McNeil, B. W. Higgins, Director. KNEELING: Vernon Hughes, LaMonte Armstrong, Giradeau Bynum, Walter Rankin, Clarence Lambert. 168 The Dudley High School Baseball Team was successful in winning the State Championship this year, (1965). We believe that loyalty, faithfulness, and a moral obligation to duty gave us the team effort we needed to win this championship. KNEELING: Manager, Jeffrey Evans, Walter Herbin, Melvin McNair, Rivers Mills, Phillip Staples, Walter Wal-drum, Robert Haith. STANDING: Asst. Coach, J. A. McKee, Tommie Gregory, Aaron Rogers.
