Shanks students who were en- rolled in the Gadsden Vocational- Techni- cal School had the choice of joining either the Distributive Educational Club of America or the Vocational Industrial Club of America. Both clubs taught the students how to express themselves, work with oth- ers. and make contributions to society as individuals. All members were required to maintain at least a 1.5 grade point average each six weeks. The purpose of the VIC A Club was to teach students leadership roles within their school and community, while the purpose of the DEC A Club was to teach young men and women about careers in retail sales. The DEC A Club took several trips to Tallahassee and sur- rounding areas to learn to set up window displays and store arrangements. Officers of the VICA Club were president. James A. Shanks' junior varsity cheer- leading squad for the I9S3-'S4 school term consisted of nine members. Cap- tain of the squad was Renita Bowman with Benita Griffin assisting her as co- captain. Other members included Tra- cey Clayton. Andrea Dixon. Debora Lewis. Michelle Peoples. Gwendolyn Randolph. Shalondra Sinclair, and Ton- jii Wiggins. Enthusiasm and spirit were characteristic of each individual. Prac- tice was held daily during sixth period, and occasionally after school on Tues- days. Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Pep rallies, parades, and basketball and football games were just a few activities in which the cheerleaders were in- volved. Fund-raising projects included selling candy and spirit buttons during homecoming week, and sponsoring car washes and dances. As sponsor of the squad. Mrs. J.L.
