The twenty-member newspaper staff had only Five members from last year's staff. The newspaper staff went on two different trips to Tallahassee. On one trip, they went to the Civic Center for a journalism workshop. On the other trip, they toured the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University Journalism Department and the Tallahassee Demo- crat. The newspaper consisted of eight pages and cost about S175.00 to print. The students selected stories, laid them out. and took them to the Gadsden County Times to be printed. Angela Harris, and Tovetto Williams. Under the supervision of Elder E.L. Sheppard, the National Beta Club held its annual induction on December 13. 1983. Twenty five new inductees and forty-eight returning members partici- pated. These students had to maintain the characteristics of leadership, char- acter and service, and make honor roll at least twice a semester. On May 10- 11. 1984. several Beta members attend- ed the National Beta Club Convention in Orlando. Florida. During the year, the Beta Club sponsored several major events including a school campaign to increase sophomore performance on the State Student Assessment Test and a program to encourage academics by awarding students who made honor roll with a day off from school or a party. The purpose of the Nutrition Committee was to plan and provide tasty, nutritious, and eye-appealing meals for students throughout the year. The club met each club day to meet its goals which were to serve at least nine- ty-five percent of the students enrolled at Shanks and to provide a pleasing atmosphere in which students could enjoy their meals. The cafeteria became more pleasing to the eye when it was remodeled by the addition of new booths, tables, and chairs.
