The Student Council, representative of all groups in the school, worked as a media- tor between the student body and the fac- ulty in order to create a more harmonious school atmosphere. Officiating over the sixty-member group were President Eric Sanders. Vice-president Felischa Redding. Treasurer Roderick Palmer. Secretary Stephanie Faison. Assistant Secretary Carolyn Johnson, and Parliamentarian Gregory Harris. Voted on by the entire student body, the Council officers had to maintain a C average and be free of office discipline. Each homeroom elected two representatives. The Council kept quite busy during the year with many ac- tivities that included the get acquainted dance, the election of homeroom officers and student council representatives, the Miss Shanks Pageant, intermural basket- ball games, the Valentine's dance, the Christmas dance, the Mock Miss Shanks Pageant, and the Student Council honors banquet. The Council planned several fund-raising activities in order to attend district and state meetings and to donate to charitable organizations such as Mus- cular Dystrophy and the American Heart Association. Mrs. Lit ha McGill and Miss Shirlean Thomas were sponsors for the or- ganization. Meetings were held on Tues- days and Thursdays from 8-.10 a.m. -8:25 a.m. Performing at the council-sponsored Miss Shanks Pageant are Sonja McSwain and Peter Lawson. Senior representatives are Front Row Angela Riles. Chinita McCall. Gloria Brown. Breela Robinson. Bernadette Bryant. Patricia Hinson. Angela Harris, and Carolyn Johnson. Back Row Mrs. McGill. keeping the choir on the up heat. Michael Mason accompanies the choir as drummer. Dedicated to perfecting the choir's overall qualities. Dr. Brown spends hours selecting music. Roderick Palmer enhances the songs by playing the synthesizer. Under the direction of Dr. James W. Brown, the James A. Shanks Gospel Choir performed in churches, sur- rounding schools and on several pro- grams in school. Although the choir was only one year old. Dr. Brown had great hopes for his young enthusiastic group. The seventy-member group made a great impression in the school's extra-curricular activities. Kathy Woods. Janelle Robinson, and Cla- rence Bryant were soloists for the group. The singers were accompanied by Peter Lawson on the piano. Roderick Palmer on the synthesizer. Lawrence Hall on the bass guitar, and Michael Mason on the trap set. The choir's aspi- rations were to get a better equipped sound system and to become more re- nown in the area by performing on tele- vision. Mrs. Mary Lewis was the spon- sor of the group. Practices were held Saturday afternoons from 3:00-5.00. 77
