Shanks' Spiking Tigerettes Rank Second In District James A. Shanks' Spiking Tigerettes for the 1983- '84 school term ended the season with fourteen wins and sixteen losses. Practice hours were scheduled Monday through Thursday. usually from 3:30-5:30p.m. Tournaments participated in included the Robert E. Lee Invitational in Jacksonville on October 8. the Governor's Classic Invitational in Tallahassee on October 21-22, and the District Tournament on November 3 at Lincoln High School where they received second place. Captain of the team was senior Jozell Graham, and co-captain was Cassan- dra Lee. Of the eleven players. Monica Bradwell and Jozell Graham were the only senior athletes. Jeffrey McGriff was the team s trainer, and Terry Williams was the scorekeeper. With the 6-2 offense being run. Mrs. Leola Francis coached the Tigerettes through victory and defeat. Sharon Smith gels a spike in on the opponent. During a break. Coach Francis reviews tech- niques with her players. Members of the 1983 '84 Volleyball Team are Front Row Iris Jackson. Jozell Graham. Four Shanks Track Members Selected For AH Big Bend Shanks’ track team consisted of thirty-nine males and eighteen females with each person participating in one or more of the following events: hurdling. pole vault- ing. discus-throwing, sprinting and jumping. The track team, under the guidance of Coach James Pelham, and the cross country team, coached by Mr. William Garrett trained vigorously to obtain their goals of excellence in field events. The boys' cross country team, consisting of Wayne Collins. Earl Jackson and Alfonzo Banks, completed a successful season with Collins and Jackson being selected as All Big Bend runners. The girls' two mile team also had two members. Rochelle Walter and Lalanza Mathews, selected as All Big Bend winners. Other members of the girls’ team were Sonja West. Sherry I Shirley. Sandra Harris and Ja wanna Bethea. The first track meet of the season, an indoor event in Gainesville, took place on February 10. The sophomores had a track meet of their own against Carter-Parramore on February 21 and a varsity meet on February 24. The season culminated in state competition against area schools and a select number of out- of-state schools. Girls shot putters and high jumpers are Kneeling Jawanna Bethea. Kelly Malik, and liajuana Fen- nell Back Row Joy Milton and Artesa Washing ton. Boys shotputting team members are Kneeling Madison Johnson. Lyndon Williams, and Tim Wright Standing Clint Farlin. Weightlifting Team Works Hard To Improve Record Nineteen members of the weightlifting team put in hours of strenuous work during the off season to improve their football program. Coach Ricky Bell was the director for the 1983- 84 school term. Practice was held during sixth period and after school to provide the football players with a way to keep in shape and to help produce a powerful and well-trained group of athletes. The team consisted of nine weightlifting classes ranging from a 114-pound class to a heavyweight class. Members participated in four matches and one tournament. Nine sophomores, three juniors, and seven seniors made up the team. In order to remain on the team, members had to maintain a good grade point average and be willing to work hard. Demonstrating his weightlifting ability is Ray- mond Ward. Members of the weightlifting team are Front Row Lyndon Williams. Rodney Martin. Andrew Bethea. Michael kenon. Gary Russ. Kelley Thornpkins.
