History Highlighted By Law Education And Voting Week The main purpose of government and history is to help prepare people to be productive citizens and to live in this democratic society, stated Mr. Carl Daniels, chairperson of the History Department. Along with Mr. Daniels other teachers were Mrs. Rebecca Campbell. Mrs. Lucy Rollins. Mrs. Alma Byrd. Mr. Don White, and Mr. James Pelham. American government, world history, and American history were offered. The department also helped conduct student elections by borrowing voting machines from the county. Students became enthusiastically involved in Law Education Week during the week of February 20-24. Christopher Walker seems interested in what Mrs. Byrd is explaining to him. Helping Terry Gilyard and Terry Williams with their government class work is Mr White Mrs Rollins' explanation helps Vancheria Brun- son better understand world history. Mrs. Campbell helps Frankie Willis with a ques- tion on American history. 47

Foreign Exchange Student Enhances Language Classes The entire faculty and staff welcomed Ricardo Leon Bidart Yanez. a foreign exchange student from Buenos Aires. Argentina, as he began school on January 9. 1984. He lived with a Gadsden County family for three months. Ricardo and many other exchange students from abroad came by the Open Door Exchange Program which was sponsored by a non profit organization endorsed by the federal govern- ment. Along with assisting Ricardo. Mrs. Nanette Lawrence kept students busy with many activities. Students had the opportunity to go on several field trips to acquaint themselves with Spanish and French cultures. They also learned their foreign vocabulary by acting out skits and dialogues. French and Spanish students participated in the Foreign Language Fair held at Florida High on December 23. 1983. Competing with other Big Bend Students was difficult, but Alan Morgan and Joel Parramore placed first in French III. Pamela Young. Brenda Clove, and La tony a Peoples lead the competition by placing first in French I. Spanish II students ranked high in their division with Baron Thomas placing second. Byron Thomas placing third, and Glenn Fngle placing fourth. Mrs. Lawrence shows her class Films of many foreign countries. Ricardo Yanez shows Bill Carman and Regina Butler his home. Argentina, on the map Continuing to broaden their horizons. Alan Morgan and Joel Parramore discuss the French Fair. 48
