Science Department Adds New Courses To Curriculum The Science Department, headed by Mr. Carlos Gaskin, offered additional courses at school during the new seventh period. Courses offered included science re- search. botany-zoology. Biology II. and physical science. Students were allowed to take the class in the morning from 7.00-8:15 or in the afternoon from 3:30-5:05. The seventh period gave the students the opportunity to gain an extra credit for graduation and a chance to advance their learning in the science field. Students also participated in the local science fair which was held in the Shanks gymnasi- um. the regional science fair, which was held at Florida State University, and the state science fair, which was held in Melbourne. Florida, on April 11-14. 1984. Students had to cope with physics, chemistry, physical science, and biology classes. Labs, formulas, chemical bonds, dissections and endless tasks were famil- iar to science students. Realizing that they were preparing for the future, students took on the many challenging lessons that were placed before them. The faculty members included Miss Allison Burns. Mrs. Deborah Waldheim. Mr. Ricky Bell. Mr. Gaskin, and Mr. Ricky Ardley. t iuu mil. Cecil Smith's attention is elsewhere as Beverly Jackson looks into the microscope. History Highlighted By Law Education And Voting Week The main purpose of government and history is to help prepare people to be productive citizens and to live in this democratic society, stated Mr. Carl Daniels, chairperson of the History Department. Along with Mr. Daniels other teachers were Mrs. Rebecca Campbell. Mrs. Lucy Rollins. Mrs. Alma Byrd. Mr. Don White, and Mr. James Pelham. American government, world history, and American history were offered. The department also helped conduct student elections by borrowing voting machines from the county. Students became enthusiastically involved in Law Education Week during the week of February 20-24. Christopher Walker seems interested in what Mrs. Byrd is explaining to him. Helping Terry Gilyard and Terry Williams with their government class work is Mr White Mrs Rollins' explanation helps Vancheria Brun- son better understand world history. Mrs. Campbell helps Frankie Willis with a ques- tion on American history. 47
