Math Courses Are Improved Society has acquired a need for technological advancement. Today ’s high school students are headed into an era of unprecedented competition. The eight-member Math Department continued to expand to meet the needs of a technologically- advancing world. Math analysis, taught by Mrs. Leola Francis, was added to the wide variety of courses offered. Other classes were business math. Algebra I. Algebra II. Algebra III. geometry, traditional math, and remedial math. Seventh period classes were offered before and after school to prepare students for the changes brought about by the RAISE Rill. A new teacher. Mr. Albert Vealey. was added to the faculty. Returning to the Math Department was Mrs. Willie Ruth Williams who taught Algebra II and general math. Mrs. Francis returns homework to At Brown. Surrounded by students. Mrs. Elaine Richardson explains results of their quiz. Willie Mae Sweet seeks help from Mr. Vealey. Science Department Adds New Courses To Curriculum The Science Department, headed by Mr. Carlos Gaskin, offered additional courses at school during the new seventh period. Courses offered included science re- search. botany-zoology. Biology II. and physical science. Students were allowed to take the class in the morning from 7.00-8:15 or in the afternoon from 3:30-5:05. The seventh period gave the students the opportunity to gain an extra credit for graduation and a chance to advance their learning in the science field. Students also participated in the local science fair which was held in the Shanks gymnasi- um. the regional science fair, which was held at Florida State University, and the state science fair, which was held in Melbourne. Florida, on April 11-14. 1984. Students had to cope with physics, chemistry, physical science, and biology classes. Labs, formulas, chemical bonds, dissections and endless tasks were famil- iar to science students. Realizing that they were preparing for the future, students took on the many challenging lessons that were placed before them. The faculty members included Miss Allison Burns. Mrs. Deborah Waldheim. Mr. Ricky Bell. Mr. Gaskin, and Mr. Ricky Ardley. t iuu mil. Cecil Smith's attention is elsewhere as Beverly Jackson looks into the microscope. Mrs. Waldheim writes out a class assignment on the hoard. During class. Miss Burns demonstrates the use of a microscope. 45
