Innovations Introduced In Shanks’ English Department The English Department. headed by Mrs. Geraldine Black, adjusted to a number of innovations. Among these changes were the R.A.I.S.E. bill, the composition pro- gram. contests, and educational television. The R.A.I.S.E. bill required that all students, beginning with the 1985- '86 graduates, have four credits of English. The composition program required that every student write one composition a week. The program's purpose was to increase the students' ability to write. Some of the contests in which students became involved included the declamation contest, the spelling bee. the Soil and Water Conservation Contest, the Exchange Club Speak- ing Contest, and the Pride Contest. Two educational televisions were added in the department. With these innovations, the English Department members presented educational programs broadcast from Tallahassee. Also offered at Shanks was a Tallahassee Community College course. The course, taught by Mrs. Sarah Martin, gave the seniors taking it the opportunity to earn college credit in addition to their regular credit. Students received college credit for the modes of communication, interpersonal communication, writing fiction and public speaking. Mrs Black interprets a confusing literature story for Alfonso Banks.
