Raise Bill Causes Changes For Guidance Counselors This year brought about many changes due to the RAISE bill enacted by the state legislature. This bill extended the school day and increased the number of math credits from two to three, while also increasing the credits needed in science from one to three. Mrs. Sharon Elias and Rev. Elbert L. Sheppard reviewed all student records in order to make sure the students were taking the newly-required courses. The guidance counselors also helped students use the CHOICES comput- er which enabled them to find the career fields in which they were qualified. Checking the results of a student 's program from the CHOICES computer is Rev. Sheppard. Mrs. Elias sets an appointment for counseling with Debra Perry. Using an available source of information for fu- ture occupations, the CHOICES computer. Ter- rance Simmons responds to a computer question. 38

Raise Bill Causes Changes In Students’ Requirements Coordinating registration and scheduling, arranging field trips and overseeing in service were responsibilities of Miss Bettye Ponder, curriculum coordinator. To alleviate the paperwork problems involved in scheduling and registration, staff members used the office computer. Miss Ponder spent many hours smoothing the way for educational innovations including educational television, video tapes, and the seventh-period classes in mathematics and science. With the advent of the seventh period, many courses were offered before and after school to prepare for the changes caused by the Raise Achievement in Secondary Education Bill passed by the Florida Legislature. The bill affected the present juniors and sophomores for the 1984-85 school year, requiring successful completion of a minimum of twenty- two credits in grades nine through twelve. The aides’ main jobs were to help teachers with duties related to remediation for the state and county skills in mathematics and English. Helping to raise low Criterion Referenced Test scores through clerical and reinforcement tasks kept Shanks’ three aides busy. Students were mini-tested on campus by Mrs. Judith Parramore if they failed State Student Assessment Test skills. Miss Anna Me Griff reviews work to be used in remediation classes. State skills are perplexing to Bobby Jamison, but Mrs. Ora Bethea helps him to master them. Miss Bettye Ponder enjoys comparing computer printouts. Mrs. Judith Parramore administers a test to Craig Jackson. 37

1 Educational Television Is Installed In Classrooms A new television system connected with Leon County 's educational network was installed in many Shanks classrooms. The librarians assumed responsibility for scheduling programs and transmitting video tapes from Shanks' Media Center. Mew books were purchased for the young adults who attended Shanks. The main purpose of the library was to support the academic goals of students and teachers by providing print and non-print materials. In addition, the library encouraged students in their search for knowledge and academic and personal interests. The card catalog was also updated in an effort to assist the students in finding materials. A Read In was held during American Education Week. November 14- 18. During this time, all students, faculty, and staff members read quietly for thirty minutes each day. Mrs. Alma Allison researches a topic for a stu- dent. While reading the newspaper. Marvin McMillian catches up on current events. Educational television is an innovation Mrs. Su- zanne Carlton helped to instigate. 39
