Administration Strives For Better School Environment Being an administrator at James A. Shanks High School required much time and effort for Mr. Carlos Deason. principal, and Dr. James Brown, assistant principal. Both had many individual responsibilities, but worked together to make improve- ments. Mr. Deason s efforts were projected toward providing a comfortable learn- ing environment for students. This duty included seeing that well-trained teachers were available, and that there was a suitable curriculum. Dr. Brown's main obligation was student control and discipline. Students were made aware of rules and expectations early in the year. A humanistic approach was taken in discipline, and parents were encouraged to become involved. Tasks such as acquiring text- books. scheduling assemblies and activities, and preparing transportation reports were among Dr. Brown’s duties. Both administrators anticipated many additional changes, and came to the conclusion that in the long run they would be to the students' advantage. In the meantime, students were encouraged to set goals and work toward excellence. As part of his daily responsibilities. Mr Deason balances receipts. Preparing an attendance report for the county office are Mr Deason and Mrs. Faye Kyllonen. Dr. Brown organizes materials for the school progress report. 35
