gg Denise Brown Selected As i Miss Shanks For 1983-'84 A FANTASY OF YESTERDA Y BECOMES A REALITY OF TODA Y. was the theme for the 1983- 84 Miss Shanks Pageant. On October 21. 1983. a fantasy became a reality for Denise Brown who was chosen as Miss Shanks. Denise displayed her talent in the pageant by performing a humorous dialect. Sleepin' at de Foot o' de Bed. Her attendants were Angela Harris. Natalie DuPont. Bernadette Bryant. Robbie Yeomans, and Cynthia Davis. In order to compete for the title, the contes- tants had to have met the following requirements: must have a C average, must be active in school activities, and must be free of office discipline. The pageant, sponsored by the student council, consisted of talent, evening gown, and ques- tion-and-answer competitions. During the intermission, the audience was enter- tained by several dance routines presented by the Modern Dance Club and vocal selections by Peter Lawson. Evette Lawson. Roderick Palmer. Sonja Swain. Janelle Robinson, and Carl Sconiers. The competitions were judged by Mr. John Black. Dr. Lillie King, and Mrs. Cheryl Simmons. Statistician for the occasion was Mr. Anthony Farlin. The mistress of ceremonies. Lori Bouie. was a former Shanks student and first attendant of the 1978-'79 Miss Shanks court. Cynthia Da vis participates in Homecoming '83. Tigers Get It Right During Week Of Spirit Activities During the week of November 7-11. 1983. Shanks students participated in Spirit Week activities. The excitement began on Monday with Punk Rock Day. Tuesday was Class Day and the seniors dressed up. the juniors wore red and blue and the sophomores dressed as young children. Wednesday. Slave Day. saw the seniors buy the juniors and sophomores for fifty cents. Thursday was T-shirt and Slogan Day. The Tigers held a pep rally in the gym on Thursday night and followed it by a bonfire on the rifle range. On the last day of Spirit Week, the students had Color Day with everyone wearing orange and black. During the entire week, a spirit chain contest was held in the cafeteria. The seniors bought the majority of the links. On Friday, a parade was held at 4:00 p.m. and the homecoming game took place at 8.00 p.m. During halftime, the homecoming queen. Joanette Barnes, was crowned. The entire Shanks family helped to make Spirit Week a success. Joy fills Karl Harris' face as he shows off his designs on Punk Rock Day. Tired and weary. Kenneth Thomas takes a break on Dress up Day. Tangela Moore. Gregory Taylor, and Jozell Graham chat happily on Punk Rock Day. Getting into the spirit before the homecoming game are Eric Allen.
