Student Council Is Democratic Body Under the leadership of Mrs. Lithia McGill, the James A. Shanks High School Student Council was an example of de- mocracy in action. Representatives from each senior, junior, and sophomore homeroom were elected, and met Tuesday and Thursday mornings before school. Student Council offi- cers. voted into office in a school-wide election, were Kim Shaw, president; Carla Frye, vice-president; Sharon Maples, secretary; Timothy Starke, treasurer; Willie Shaw; sergeant-at- arms. Terrance Milton; parlimentarian. and Victor Sweet, busi- ness manager. The Council served as the intermediary be- tween faculty and students. Representatives discussed possi- ble rule changes and policy decisions and reported back to the Council, thereby helping to build a working relationship be- tween faculty and students. The Student Council served also as the sponsor for many of the school's foremost activities. Members raised funds for and organized the Homecoming Parade. Spirit Week, the Miss Shanks Pageant and other school activities. Receiving a motion during a Council meeting is Kim Shaw, president. Dancers Participate In County Events Sponsored by Mrs. Constance Long, the Shanks High School Modern Dance Club participated in three engagements: the Greensboro homecoming activities, the Miss Shanks Pageant, and the Fashion Extravaganza. Members of the club practiced daily for two weeks prior to each performance. Dance leaders for the Modern Dance Club were Derrick Dudley for the male dancers and Chaunda Harris for the female dancers. Mrs. Constance Long demonstrates a basic dance position.
