Thirteen Returning Members Join Team Under the direction of Mrs. Constance Long, the Softball Team learned the fundamentals of softball, which included catch- ing. throwing, batting, and running. The team members, who were chosen from the fifty-eight girls who tried out. practiced Monday through Thursday afternoons after school. The girls, chosen for their softball ability and school enthusiasm, had choice of their position. The returning players were Diane Woods. Tammy Woodard. Rutha Black. Monica Graham. Weightlifting Adds To Sports Programs Grunts and groans were but a few of the sounds which es- caped from the weight room during practice sessions. The weightlifting team practiced daily to build a strong team. Coach Ricky Bell demanded hard work from every team mem- ber. Weightlifting, added to the athletic program to provide the football players with an outlet for their energy and strength, consisted of nine weight classes ranging from the I 14-pound class to the heavy weight class. The team partici- pated in seven matches and one tournament. Qualifications for being on the team were a good grade point average and a desire to work hard for the good of the team. Members Acquire Baseball Principles The baseball team, headed by Mr. Joseph Barnes, had various training sessions to enable them to play better. They learned the rules and fundamentals of playing baseball. The team opened its season with a game against North Florida Christian on March 5. 1982. Members worked at practice to develop skills. The most important rule stressed by Coach Barnes was to plan ahead in order to win. Anthony Daniels winds up for his famous fast ball. Leon russ warms up with daily exercises.
