Weightlifting Adds To Sports Programs Grunts and groans were but a few of the sounds which es- caped from the weight room during practice sessions. The weightlifting team practiced daily to build a strong team. Coach Ricky Bell demanded hard work from every team mem- ber. Weightlifting, added to the athletic program to provide the football players with an outlet for their energy and strength, consisted of nine weight classes ranging from the I 14-pound class to the heavy weight class. The team partici- pated in seven matches and one tournament. Qualifications for being on the team were a good grade point average and a desire to work hard for the good of the team. Experience Gained Through Wrestling Shanks' wrestling program, which entered its second year, proved a favorite for football players in the off-season. Daily practice sessions under the supervision of Coach Harold Kelly helped to produce a powerful and well-trained group of ath- letes. The team faced few opponents in scheduled meets, but the practice and knowledge of wrestling provided a great deal of practical experience. Ten classes made up the team, ranging from 101-227 pound class to the unlimited weight class. Qualifications for being on the team were keeping a good grade point average, being able to wrestle within a specified weight class and a desire to work to achieve perfection. The team members, who were chosen from the fifty-eight girls who tried out. practiced Monday through Thursday afternoons after school.
