Experience Gained Through Wrestling Shanks' wrestling program, which entered its second year, proved a favorite for football players in the off-season. Daily practice sessions under the supervision of Coach Harold Kelly helped to produce a powerful and well-trained group of ath- letes. The team faced few opponents in scheduled meets, but the practice and knowledge of wrestling provided a great deal of practical experience. Ten classes made up the team, ranging from 101-227 pound class to the unlimited weight class. Qualifications for being on the team were keeping a good grade point average, being able to wrestle within a specified weight class and a desire to work to achieve perfection. Tigerettes Rank Second In State The state volleyball tournament was held in Titusville. Florida on November 20. 1981. The Tigerettes defeated Vanguard 15- 12. 16-14 and lost to Titusville 5-1 5. I 2-1 5 in the tournament. They were second in the state in Class I-3A. The Tigerettes enjoyed a winning season under the direction of Coach Leola Francis, as district, regional and sectional champs. The Junior Varsity record was 2-6. Team members who deserved recogni- tion as outstanding players were Linda Stokes. Rutha Black. Esther Harper. Tammy Woodard. Angela Washington and Sharon Brown. Volleyball Team members include: Front Row Sandra Washington. Tammy Woodard. Second Row Cassandra Milton. Debra Love. Stephanie Brown and Angela Washington. Back Row Linda Stokes. Stanley Card and Esther Harper. Mrs. Francis peers through her crystal volleyball to see the future of the team. The team rushes onto the court hand-in-hand as a show of unity. Angela Washington. Esther Harper and Mrs. Francis look on as something attracts their attention. 73

Weightlifting Adds To Sports Programs Grunts and groans were but a few of the sounds which es- caped from the weight room during practice sessions. The weightlifting team practiced daily to build a strong team. Coach Ricky Bell demanded hard work from every team mem- ber. Weightlifting, added to the athletic program to provide the football players with an outlet for their energy and strength, consisted of nine weight classes ranging from the I 14-pound class to the heavy weight class. The team partici- pated in seven matches and one tournament. Qualifications for being on the team were a good grade point average and a desire to work hard for the good of the team. HAMMS The strain of making a heavy lift is clearly shown on Ricky Reed’s face. Eric Sanders demonstrates the proper technique for bench pressing. Wright lifting team members are Anthony Oliver.
