Team Practices For Area Track Meets Hurdling, throwing discs, pole vaulting, and running distances were events in which the James A. Shanks Track Team partici- pated at track meets held in Florida. Some of these meets included the Florida Relay in Gainesville, the North Florida Relay in Panama City, and the Kiwanis Relay at Florida State University. Under the guidance of Coach James Pelham, sev- enty-five students practiced sixth period to form the track team. The team sold candy to buy new uniforms. Cross Country Teams Learn To Endure « ' Ail Under the direction of Coach James Pelham, the Boys’ and girls' Cross Country teams were runners-up in the district competition held in Panama City. Cross Country.’’ Coach Pelham said, is simply long-distance running competition ideally held on golf courses or other hilly, soft terrain. It is considered to be a test of endurance and strength. The boys' team, which consisted of ten members, was required to run three miles, while the girls' team, which consisted of nine members, was required to run two miles. However, both teams ran over three miles each day in training. The teams participat- ed in eight cross country competitions. On his fifth lap around the new track is Millard Brown. Antonio Jackson strives to keep his lead ahead of Edward Moore.
