Students Practice During Classtime Teaching students to play instruments more effectively was one of the responsibilities of Mr. Charles Burns, band director and music teacher. Students practiced after school and during class for halftime festivities during home football games. Leading the band in the Shanks homecoming parade, the Florida ASM University homecoming parade, and the Havana homecoming parade, was the responsibility of Drum Major Timothy Hughes. The band also performed during special school assemblies. Mr. Charles Burns directs the band during class. Glynn Sapp. Curtis Bridges, and John Washington practice during classtime. Edward Dixon. Timothy Hughes, and Jeffrey Logan lead the band in parades. 49

ROTC Participates In Area Parades Sergeant Major Leon Roy helps the cadets with a problem. Master Sergeant James Lowe and Tiajuana Fennell discuss the upcoming schedule for the ROTC Department. Master Sergeant Lowe gives final pointers to the color guard. Under the leadership and teaching of Sergeant Major Leon Roy and Master Sergeant James Lowe. 142 students became ROTC cadets. Cadets practiced once a month to prepare for the annual inspection in March. The boys drill team and the girls drill team participated in various parades including Shanks' Homecoming Parade, the Pecan Festival Parade, and the Community Action Parade in Quincy. In March, a military ball was sponsored by the ROTC Department for cadets at Shanks and Carter-Parramore. 48

P.E. Provides For Varied Activities Volleyball, football, tumbling, square dancing, basketball and softball were a few of the sports activities taught. Coaches Joseph Barnes. Ricky Bell. Constance Long and John Everett taught rules as well as sportsmanship. P.E.. an elective for juniors and seniors, was a required course for sophomores. Gym suits were available for purchase by all students in the co educational classes. Students were graded on their class participation as well as on written examinations. Daily routine included dressing out and doing warm-up exercises before starting the day's activities. Coach Bell goes over the schedule while Ray Alexander. Leasdell Russ and Darion Robinson look on. Mrs. Long and Coach Everett plan group activities. Calvin Long shows his tumbling ability in a handstand. Coach Barnes makes out lesson plans. 50
