 Home-Ec Classes Cook Prize Dishes Home-Economics students displayed exhibits at the District Meeting in Panama City and at the North Florida Fair. Win- ning first-place prizes were Tommy Hinson for a cake. Vonder Youman for a decorated cake, and Darrel Wells for a pecan pie. Winning second-place prizes were Tommy Hinson for cinnamon rolls. Michael Russ for pecan lassies. Lynn Johnson for a sweet potato pie. and Anthony Hopkins for a cake. Receiving honorable mention for cookies were Thawana Shaw and Jimmie Austin. The Home-Ec Department also cooked the welcoming dinner for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Mrs. Ella Reed and Stella Dixie examine the parts of a coffee pot. Mrs. Anna Paul shows Ella Walter the uses of a sewing machine. Students gather around Mrs. Irene Green while she explains a homework assignment. Mrs. Harriet Bryant discusses the day's work with Carl Daniels. 47

Industrial Arts Constructs Floats Work! Work! Work! Mr. Jerome Gilmore, instructor of Indus- trial Arts, and Mr. Reginald Anderson, intern, stressed the importance of work throughout the entire school year. The students, with the help of Mr. Gilmore, constructed the Miss Shanks float for Shanks' and Havana's homecoming parades. They also constructed the Miss Homecoming float for Shanks' homecoming parade. Other helpful projects included setting up and repairing the weight lifting equipment in the field house, and building trash barrels and distributing them around the school to encourage cleanliness. A new project for the students was the printing of names on T-shirts. Another exciting part of the year was the building and shooting of rockets. ROTC Participates In Area Parades Sergeant Major Leon Roy helps the cadets with a problem. Master Sergeant James Lowe and Tiajuana Fennell discuss the upcoming schedule for the ROTC Department. Master Sergeant Lowe gives final pointers to the color guard. Under the leadership and teaching of Sergeant Major Leon Roy and Master Sergeant James Lowe. 142 students became ROTC cadets. Cadets practiced once a month to prepare for the annual inspection in March. The boys drill team and the girls drill team participated in various parades including Shanks' Homecoming Parade, the Pecan Festival Parade, and the Community Action Parade in Quincy. In March, a military ball was sponsored by the ROTC Department for cadets at Shanks and Carter-Parramore. 48
