Business Gains New Department Head Mrs. Rena Jackson served as the new head of the Business Education Department. The Business Department also gained a new instructor, Mrs. Lena Jones. Business courses offered this year were Typing I. Typing II. Typing III. office practice, bookkeeping, business English, business math, and record keeping. The student of the month competition was sponsored by the Business Department. To become student of the month, a student had to have at least a “C average in all courses, and be taking at least two business courses. The opportunity to become student of the month encouraged more students to become interested in business courses. Mrs. Lena Jones checks exam papers after a long day of testing. Foreign Languages Gain New Course French was added to the Foreign Languages Department this year. Mrs. Nannette Lawrence, foreign languages instructor, taught her students by going into detail about the way of life of the French and Spanish. She did this because. The philos- ophy of teaching the language is only one aspect of the culture of a people. The many facets of the way they live, such as their music, religion, and home life, are seen by students through the experiences of people their own age. Students in foreign language classes did not learn by simply sitting in a classroom, but they also participated in various outside activi- ties. including a field trip to St. Augustine and visits to Mexi- can. Spanish and French restaurants. The students also cooked and ate meals that they prepared during class hours, and shared in Christmas pinata parties. Mrs. Lawrence slays after school lo help Millard Brown with his Spanish. Mrs. Lawrence goes over Spanish musical ballads. Marilyn McGhee and Hanh Bui discuss the day’s French assignment. Industrial Arts Constructs Floats Work! Work! Work! Mr. Jerome Gilmore, instructor of Indus- trial Arts, and Mr. Reginald Anderson, intern, stressed the importance of work throughout the entire school year. The students, with the help of Mr. Gilmore, constructed the Miss Shanks float for Shanks' and Havana's homecoming parades. They also constructed the Miss Homecoming float for Shanks' homecoming parade. Other helpful projects included setting up and repairing the weight lifting equipment in the field house, and building trash barrels and distributing them around the school to encourage cleanliness. A new project for the students was the printing of names on T-shirts. Another exciting part of the year was the building and shooting of rockets.
