Students Conduct Research Projects Research programs led several Shanks students into local, regional and state science competition. Senior Kim Shaw re- ceived a grant to further her project at Florida ASM Universi- ty during the summer. To finance science fair participation, students sold chocolate bars. Local science fair competition was held at Shanks on February 25-26. Winners advanced to the regional fair at North Florida Christian School in Tallahas- see on March 25-26. Lake City hosted the state science fair in April. Mr. Carlos Gaskin makes an assignment for his class. During a video-tape. Mrs. Benita Wiggins points out items of importance to her students. 41

Students Discuss Voting Procedures Students at James A. Shanks High School prepared for elec tions by discussing voting procedures. When asked about student voting, Mr. Carl Daniels, head of the Social Studies Department, said. If Democracy is to survive, citizens of the future should vote. He also stated that a nation is only as strong as its participating citizens. Black History Month was observed in February. Mr. Daniels stated that along with the nation as a whole, the Shanks High School family took part in the annual celebration of Afro-American History Month. Mr. Daniels talks to a very attentive class. Mr. James Pelham listens to answers the students give before giving a definite answer. Mr. Don White shows the class his new bulletin board.
