English Department Improves Curriculum English courses emphasized writing through the State of Flor- ida's newly-instigated writing program. In the program, stu- dents in their terminal year of English were required to write one composition per week. Teacher loads were reduced to accommodate individualized instruction. An outgrowth of the program was the state-sponsored program to recognize initia- tive and distinction in education, in which students participat- ed. Mrs. Sarah Martin, an instructor at Tallahassee Community College, taught a college preparatory English course which gave the participants high school and college credits. Other accomplishments of the English Department included the Spelling Bee. the Declamation Contest, and the annual Christ- mas program. Mrs. Annette Flournoy helps Gary Mobley to adjust to the new equipment. Mrs. Sarah Martin and Rileen Wilson talk to the class about English. Mrs. Geraldine Black ponders a response from a student. Mrs. Lucile Smith discusses the daily assignment with her class. 37
