Counselors Quest To Solve Problems Mr. Elbert L. Sheppard and Dr. Jean Marr. counselors in the James A. Shanks Guidance Department, tried to develop a program that met the needs of all students. They helped in the counseling process by serving as consultants to parents and teachers in understanding the individual student. They also smoothed the transition between schools, encouraged parents to get involved in school relations, and helped students to secure jobs or plan for college after graduation. The Guidance Department played a key role in administering the State Stu- dent Assessment Test. Another function of the Guidance De- partment was to encourage academic superiority by sponsor- ing the Beta Club and the National Honor Society. Dr. Marr checks over a student's cumulative folder.
