Helen Miragias, Treasurer; Arthur Zahn, Vice-President; Albert F. Landrigan, Advisor; Edward F. Brickley, Headmaster; James Mahoney, President; Lillian Cronin, Secretary. 2 J[tt2gtrald 1917 - 1963 “The Just Man Shall Be in Everlasting Remembrance. ” 3 HEADMASTER’S MESSAGE Our era is one of enormous historical signifi- cance. Giant strides in the social, economic, and physical sciences make our times truly revolution- ary. These advances are due to the extraordinary drive and resourcefulness — the potentia — of our people, qualities prophetic of the eventual fulfill- ment of the goals and ideals that we are still struggling to attain. This Year Book’s theme — “Potentia” — and its dedication to the memory of our martyred Presi- dent Kennedy, shall remind the Class of 1964 that in each of us is a mine of incalculable potentiality for good — that it remains our daily responsibility to tap these inexhaustible resources with courage and enthusiasm for service to our fellow man. These were the ideals that dominated the thoughts and actions of our late President. Through the continuing inspiration of his heroic virtues, we can, by imitating them, improve our own lives and strengthen family, community, and country. EDWARD F. BRICKLEY Headmaster VALEDICTORY TO THE HEADMASTER AND MEMBERS OF THE FACULTY OF JAMAICA PLAIN HIGH SCHOOL We the Class of “64” sincerely appreciate the message of our headmaster, Mr. Brickley, which is inspiring and appropriate. We are grateful for the earnest efforts of the faculty of Jamaica Plain High School for awakening us to the realization that developing our creative instincts and intellectual inclinations is essential to our becoming constructive contributors to our country. It is truly fitting and most proper that we manifest our deep regard for our late President, John F. Kennedy, by emulating his ideals with the same courage and enthusiasm that he displayed and exemplified for our nation’s good. Appropriately we use the title, Potentia, Power: that which we students have to give, and we must, and that which Mr. Kennedy gave and that to the ultimate degree. In seeking material for this symbol they found some very interesting information about Jamaica Plain. At the time Cromwell captured the island of Jamaica, in the British West Indies, the name of that part of Boston was changed to Jamaica Plain. It is undoubtedly a slander upon the good people of this locality to assert that it derives its name from their fondness for Jamaica rum — and that they preferred it “Plain.” Our seal has a significance, of course. The elephant’s head is taken from the crest of the Eliot coat-of-arms and symbolizes strength, dignity, and prowess. The band on the shield represents, in heraldic symbolism, a plain, while the wavy lines represent water. These too, have significance because the original name Xaymaca, given Jamaica by the Arawak Indians found on their island by Columbus, is supposed to imply “an overflowing abundance of rivers.” Instead of the family motto, of the Eliot’s, the Yearbook commit- tee placed “H. Jamaica Plain S.” on the heraldic rib- bon. The seal has been modified to fit the ring structure of all classes since 1941, and has been adopted as the official seal of Jamaica Plain High School.
