DEDICATION TO MR. MATTHEW MEALY THE GOLDEN YEAR The Golden Year, the title of the Yearbook of the Class of 1963, and a symbol of happy' years, prefigures, we hope, many golden years of retirement for our Mr. Mealy, a truly dedi¬ cated teacher. Following graduation from Brookline High, Mr. Mealy ma¬ triculated at Boston College, receiving his Bachelor’s and Mas¬ ter’s Degrees from that great educational institution. He was appointed an instructor in Mathematics at Mechanic Arts High School in 1920, and was promoted to Junior Mas¬ ter at Jamaica Plain High School in 1922. Five years later he was named Acting Head of the Mathematics Department. Sub¬ sequently, he was formally selected as the permanent Head of the Mathematics Department, the position he efficiently con¬ ducted until his retirement in 1962. In addition to his teaching duties he served as coach of both the hockey and the swimming teams from 1923 to 1931. From 1946 to 1949 he assisted our famous coach, “Jim” Duffy, and contributed to the good name and fame of the Jamaica Plain High football teams which won acclaim throughout Boston. Compasses, rectangles, triangles, and circles, he leaves be¬ hind in the classroom, but he takes with him the best wishes of thousands of graduates who are better men and women, advanced in knowledge and character, through his sincere devotion to duty. Those of us who are now in our Golden Year hope that, like the gay daffodils of the poet Wordsworth, we may — “Flash upon his inward eye Which is the bliss of solitude;” And enrich his memories for many happy and pleasant years of retirement. 4

HEADMASTER’S MESSAGE The Class of 1963 has chosen an apt title of its final chapter as “The Golden Year.” The value of gold is en¬ hanced by refinement of the crude ore. Applied to school life, the analogy is a significant one because the senior year is the culmination of the refinement — scholastic, social, and ethical — that the school unremittingly strives to achieve in the lives of all its pupils. This refinement embraces the sum-total of the ideals and values which, by practice, give the life of each person its own distinc¬ tive character. From the wisdom gained by long experience the school is deeply conscious that the values which enrich the lives of boys and girls who mine its treasures are true gold — skill, faithfulness to responsibility, loyalty, relia¬ bility, personal integrity. The school which graduates such citizens is proudly confident that its service to com¬ munity and country is of incalculable worth. Recent critical events, which will become a golden page in American history, confirm the truth that pos¬ session of the qualities mentioned will enable us to face honestly difficult situations and to make courageous de¬ cisions. By so doing, we shall bless not only ourselves, but our country as well, and live in a future marked by many, happy golden years. EDWARD F. BRICKLEY Headmaster VALEDICTORY TO THE HEADMASTER AND MEMBERS OF THE FACULTY OF JAMAICA PLAIN HIGH SCHOOL We of 1963, on leaving your kind and sincere direction will look back on the years under your guidance as the truly golden years of our lives. The class came to Jamaica Plain High with Mr. Brickley’s elevation to the Headmastership, and is the first class to have felt his influence as Headmaster, coupled with that of a growing faculty, during all of our High School years. Golden were those years, and golden, we hope, will be the future, because of the training received, and the sincerity and dedication of our teachers. We hope, too, that in the future, as in the past, the true gold which we have mined — the friendship, the trust, and the respect of every member of the faculty, will help us to better succeed in our post graduate careers.
