PRESENTED BY THE CLASS OF 1956 JAMAICA PLAIN HIGH SCHOOL JAMAICA PLAIN, MASSACHUSETTS -ipmaira Plain Branch Library Jsmaica Plain Branch Library 12 Sedgwick Street Jamaica Plain. MA 02130-2897 We Dedicate Rosanna M. Dowd Hazel W. Ruggles our 1956 Yearbook to Miss Campion, Miss Dowd, and Miss Ruggles who, to our regret, have retired from Jamaica Plain High School this year . We have missed the careful teaching of Miss Campion whose splendid scholarship and rich background brought life into our work. We will miss, too, her able direction of Class Day activities. We have missed the boundless energy, artistic appreciation, and thorough schol- arship of Miss Dowd which made her classes interesting to us . The time she spent on individual pupils and pupils, in general, testified always to her kindly interest in the betterment of our school . We have missed the buoyant graciousness of Miss Ruggles . Hers was a dual per- sonality. This was reflected In her love of the classics, her desire to inculcate this love in her pupils, and her genial interest in their everyday experiences. The National Honor Society, sponsored by her in our school, is a tribute to her appreciation of schol- arship . We congratulate these teachers at the conclusion of successful years of teaching and wish for them many years of joy and happiness. G.C. 4 My Congratulations John B . Casey Headmaster to the members of the Class of 1956 on the completion of their high school career. You are fortunate to be entering the business world at a time when great opportunities for employment exist. I hope that the virtues of industry and integrity, which we have tried to develop in you, will remain with you throughout your life . Your courses of study were designed to teach you to work and to learn the value of overcoming difficult assignments. The friends you have made in this school, both teachers and pupils, should serve to teach you the value of getting along with people . This school world in which you have been living should prepare you for the world of industry, higher education, and home building which you are about to enter . This year, we are dedicating the Yearbook to three members of the faculty who have retired: the Misses Frances R, Campion, Rosanna M. Dowd, and Hazel W. Ruggles. They were all wonderful teachers who gave their time and talents to the youth of this city for a great many years. To each of them we extend our hope for a long, happy, and well- deserved period of rest. You, the Class of 1956, could do no better than to model your lives after these fine teachers. 5 Front Row, L. to R.: Miss Buckley, Miss Chesley, Miss Dricoll, Miss Demp- sey. HIGH School offers opportunities for well-being physically and socially, as well as mentally, Jamaica Plain High with many pleasant memories of our past activities . We leave The Busy Beaver Club, known to others as the Yearbook Staff, will always be remembered for its care- ful planning and calmness (?) on picture days . Groans issuing from the second floor corridor were from none other than our Clarion Staff on Deadline Week. If nothing else, our high school years have taught the appreciation of some of the better things in life through our many Forums . Our scientific talents were aired in the Science Fair, and, in our last yt jr, a chance to blow up the lab came in the form of the Chemistry Club under the supervision of Mr. Best. A more serious opportunity was given to the students in Junior Red Cross. Here we dressed dolls for sick children and filled gift boxes for the needy in Europe. Our own girls were models in the Miss Simplicity show and, later, you should have seen our own creations . A Under social heading, Jamaica Plain High offers some opportunities for students to get H better acquainted with each other. Despite many bruises, fun was had by all at the skating H parties sponsored by the Key Club. After the bowling tournaments, we all had trophies to display, even if the majority of them were sore muscles. The Key Club dances at the H Y.M.C.A. will always be remembered, especially by the boys who were outnumbered P three to one. The highlight of any school ' s activities is the Prom. In our Sopho- W more year, a few of the more daring m embers of our class ventured forth, return- ing with fascinated looks in their eyes, stating that they were going to attend m next year ' s Prom if they had to ask their fathers. As Juniors, even more m of us were seen arriving with our sophisticated airs and best boyfriends. By January of our Senior year, the question heard most often was m Whom are you going to the Prom with? Every year the boys and girls participate in exhibits and judging: Christmas Greens and Flower Sales, Mr. Crowley; Live Stock Judging, Mr. Donaghy; Spring Flower Show, Mr. McGuckian; Poultry Judging, Mr. Wendler. Here are only two of the interesting ex- hibits of the year . 54 Merchandising THE CO-OPERATIVE MERCHANDISING class concentrate on a big Christmas display in the Retailing Room 106. This is a big project: making signs, harmonizing colors, and arranging merchandise in proper balance and good proportion. After Thanksgiving, both Junior and Senior Merchandising pupils are dismissed to work full time for the month of December in similar Christmas settings. Their projects are many: selling dolls, men ' s ties, doing pretty gift wraps, stock work, running errands, and keeping records for buyers. After this Christmas rush, most pupils are glad to return to school; however, they have gained experience invaluable for future employment . 55 Graduation Ushers Seated, L. toR.: Virginia O ' Byme, Elinor Siciliano, Elizabeth Kimpin- sky, Gloria Caporizzo . BOND voiced his appreciation for the fine Elgin watch he received from the Football Team and Cheerleaders . Although the team did not show much in the way of victories in 1955, they tried to show their appreciation to a fine coach. Our hats off to Mr. Bond, a great coach! J.F. THE ' 54 hockey season saw many players returning from last year ' s squad: John Maxy Macozek, Ronald Atta-Way Foo, Mellow Red Morrison, George Hall, Neil Healey, Bill Scanlon, and Steve Baby-Bruin Theodore. With these stars Mr. McGuckian placed great hopes in newcomers James Pasha Talanian, Gerry Sloan, Dave Walsh, and Dainis Scratch Lauris. Since the team was made up of so many inexperienced boys, the squad didn ' t register too many wins but hoped for a brighter ' 55 season. The standout of the year was Maxy Macozek. As a reward for his athletics ability and sportsmanship, he was elected to the District-League All-Star team which defeated the City AU-Star 4-0. This year, 1956, Mr. McGuckian was blessed with many returning veterans: Captain Neil Healey, Baby-Bruin Theodore, Gerry Sloan, Pasha Talanian, David Selmer, and Scratch Lauris. Promising new stars were Jack Dempsey, a freshman goalie, Ev Costa, Andy Flynn, Dick McCormick, Frank Hart- ford, and Bill Day. This year the team picked up tremendously undefeated and untied in five games. As a result of this splendid showing, the hockey sextet tied for first place in the District League. At present, Mr. McGuckian is aiming for the District Championship. With Dempsey and Walsh in the goal; Theodore and McCormick, Center; Sloan and Hartford Skating the right; Talanian and Costa, the left wing; Captain Healey and Lauris, backed up by Flynn and Selmer, at defense. Nice going Boys! Keep it up! D.L. Left to right: Joe Gallagher, Ed Dolan, Mr. Bond, Ed Quinn, Chuck Lynch. TRACK at Jamaica Plain High has always been a most successful sport. The runners as a team and as individuals, through the past three years, have ac- complished feats to rival those of other schools larger than ours . One record set by the cross-country team in the ' 53- ' 54 season may be tied but never broken. We placed five runners for a perfect score of fifteen: Steve O ' Flanagan ' 54, Eddie Quinn ' 56, Ed Manton ' 54, Ed Geishecker ' 54, and Lee Crowell ' 56. In the same year, the indoor team placed second in the District Championships, losing top honors in the final relay by three points. The same year saw Eddie Quinn break two records in the District and ' Regimental 600 yard run . The following year was a good one, as we placed third in the State Champi- onship. Individual honors went to Joe Gallagher, who placed second in the 300; Charlie Lynch, fourth in the 600; John Joyce, fifth in the mile; Fran Mazzie, fifth in the 1000; and Eddie Quinn, first in the 600. When the District Championships again rolled around, it found us running a close record, again losing in the final race by two points. Individual winners were Ed Dolan in the B 440, Bob Collins in the C broad jump, and Eddie Quinn in the B half mile. In the spring, a mile relay team composed of Joe Gallagher, Ed Dolan, Chuck Lynch, and Eddie Quinn surprised the experts as they swept the State Relay title at Belmont, to round out a successful season. In 1956, the boys did a creditable job as they compiled sixteen points in the State Meet at the Boston Garden, enough for second place among twenty- four schools. Joe Gallagher was awarded two medals as he placed second in the 300 and was involved in a tie for first place in the high jump. Fred Baskin was fifth in the 1000, and Eddie Quinn was second in the 600. Our relay team, sparked by Pee Wee Brooks, Lionel Woods, and Ed Dolan placed second to complete a successful endeavor on the part of the team. In all, there are six records held by boys from Jamaica Plain High that date back to 1949. They are sure to remain standing for some time and proudly rep- resent the Purple and Gold in the city record books . Tom Flynn, Adam Krauss, Jay Sylvester, Dick Romaine, Dave Frawley, Bill Goodwin, Joe Feeney and the able captain, Whitey Maclntyre have stayed with the team through the years. Whitey Maclntyre, Bill Goodwin, and Dick Romaine have been the most consistent scorers, averaging about fifteen points a game. Jay Sylvester and Joe Feeney have been a great help to the purple and gold defending the basket. We are all very proud of the team, for we know that they did their best to win for J.P.H.S. W.McM.
