l l x 5 X X l ll P X H Xl xilk Al -, ,J 'SJMTQ W3 l A 'tv t .5 meifelni f0I'l'l Sagebrush hugs the sand, awed by the vast emptiness of the sky, The desert, swept bare by a relentless broom, Cowers beneath the harsh wind, Its bareness unbroken except for a tiny silent village of mournful squatting buildings like dark blocks scattered by a careless hand. The town stretches feebly in the sun, sighs longingly for lost youth, and returns to a refuge of broken memories, Remembering the clanging of eager pickaxes that pursued a golden glint amidst the rock, The laughter of rugged men that rang out in mirthful bravado, The suppressed moans of patient women who had been robbed by death. The happy squeals of children at their play, The soft crooning of a mother rocking her baby to sleep, The shrill neighing of horses waiting for their riders, The wild strains of a fiddlels music that defied the frontier loneliness. Sunburnt days come and go and still the memories. . . Then suddenly the silence of years is shatteredg An evil mushroom looms in the sky and thunders its message with an ominous new sound. The wooden body of the old town trembles and is afraid. CAROLYN GAISER A-, Q fi fetttqa r Qti5i7f5MsT2W get X- i rmm.
