Q Dear Friends of the Class of January 1952: As your Principal I wish to add my congratulations to those of your officers and advisors upon your achievement of a significant milestone in your lives. Gradua- tion from high school is most assuredly a real accomplishment and your diploma is your certification that we, of the faculty of Jamaica High School, believe in you and are willing to present you to the world as the product of this school. We must all sense that we are passing through an era in which standards of life are changing. Most of us have luxuries that were unheard-of a generation ago. One of the tragedies of our era is the fact that, in the pursuit of a living which will include these luxuries, many people lose their sense of values. In witness to this fact I might cite the recently uncovered corruption in public life, in business, and in collegiate sport. It is most important for you to remember that your diploma is an endorsement of your character as well as your scholarship and that the simple old virtues of reliability and honesty still have a place in the life of the second half of the Twentieth Century. It is my hope that your Jamaica High School days have given you high standards of reliability and integrity that will endure throughout your lives and prevent you from being engulfed by the more sordid aspects of the materialism of our age. I Sincerely yours, MAURICE D. HQPKINS Principal, jamaica High School Six ff Qt 36,64 of Confmfa Poem . . ..... . . Prineipal's Rlessage . . Essay . . . . . Advisors ......... YEARBOOK Editors . According to the dictionary the word flapper'i means a worldly-wise and frivolous girl. The whole idea of the flapper era was pleasure and good times. Everything moved at a fast and furious pace. People seemed intent on crowding as much living in twenty-four hours as the day could hold. People expressed their emotions in wild and furious dances, like the 'Charles- ton, the 'iShimmy, and the nBlack Bottom. The younger generation ran wild and many parents got gray hairs before their time. The word uflappern itself was applied to a young lady with an I've-just-come- from-under-a-steamrollern figure. She made goo-goo eyes at young men from under a hat resembling a Roman helmet. Her main occupation in life was to see how many parties she could attend and how many pairs of shoes she could wear out. The areal fast boys wore racoon coats and Chicken Inspector badges and you were a real 'ihepl' kid if you knew where a Speakeasy was. In those days, it was a common sight on week-ends to see Erskines filled to the windshield with old Ngrads' dressed in racoon coats like their sons, heading up to the old alma mater for the big football game. Big executives and beardless freshmen would be screaming at the top of their lungs for their favorite U. to score the win- ning touchdown. Everyone who could manage it, saw Rudolph Valentino as The Sheik. He was acknowledged to be one of the greatest matinee idols in Hollywood history. When he glided across the Hoof in a tango while Huttering those eyelashes, women of America were enraptured. Dixieland blues was the only kind of music most people listened to. There was a kind of hypnotic magic about its wild rhythm. With its blaring horns and pound- ing drums, Dixieland was guaranteed to 'fsend you. In sports this was America's ugolden eraf' She produced some of her greatest athletes during the uroaring twentiesf' Red Grange and The Four Horsemen were the rage in football. Jack Dempsey, according to the older generation, could have beaten Joe Louis. Babe Ruth's sixty homers in one season has withstood rabbit balls and Gil Hodges. Everything was building up at a fast and furious rate. 'LThe Flapper Era couldn't last forever. Things came to a sudden and abrupt end with the big crash in 1929. Herbert Hoover, then President, was blamed for the depression. He be- came as popular as rent week. The gay times were no more. It was some time before we recovered from the financial crash, but in a sense we haven't recovered from the c'Flapper Eraf, People still dance the Charleston,, at parties and Dixieland is still enjoyed by the public. Soine of the old movie stars are returning, thanks to TV and the movies, If this keeps up, I might have to go out and buy Ll rzieoon coat and uCliic'ken IIlSlJl'l'tOI',I button. MARC OLDEN Eight AW X I .xdvluidor is arewe Dear Seniors, The Class of January 1952 is one of the smallest classes to graduate in recent years, having a reg- ister of less than three hundred. This is caused by the new annual promotion scheme in elementary school, and by the loss of nearly one hundred members who graduated in three and one half years. After graduation the members of the class will scatter to various paths of endeavor-many to higher education, many to the business world, and some to the Armed Forces. One of the rewards of teaching, intangible fer ,pf W- -f sw. -. '.-L.v'J4-gsm-..,gm,3f', 'ti 5- - 11 though it may be, is association with so many fine young people who are growing up to take their W' places in the world. YVILLIANI HOLLIS Dear Seniors, , Congratulations! It has been ' in- -kg VX j....,,,..,X deed to work with so cooperative and courteous a , group. This class is a product of a liberaltlcgiwtipnfbs As a result we believe that your sens f right, duty, and honor has been sharpened, that intan- gible known as personality has been agected favor- ably: and that you are better able to assess and pass judgment on the events of the day. My parting thought to you is to continue in the path we have channeled for you. Carry on with the habits of industry we have tried to inculcate. I'm confident, to paraphrase the words of Franklin, your invest- ment in knowledge will always pay the best in- tffrest. DAVID WOLFF A Dear Seniors, Congratulations on the successfiql completion of your high school career. lt is customary to give the graduate advice. Don't blindly follow the voice that shouts the loudest. Be yourselves, keep your individuality and maintain ai diseriininating and critical mind. In that way you will serve yourself and America well. My best wishes for ai full, and happy life. We hope that you will derive pleasure from it now, and that someday, somewhere, when high school joys and sorrows have been left far behind, you may relive those days through the pages of this yearbook. The Beaver Staff, worthy of its name, worked industri- ously and with enthusiasm. Dr. Steinlein's patience and foresight guided us through those trying days. When mere words would defeat our thoughts, we can only say that our gratitude is heartfelt. Now that you are graduating and filled with dreams and aspirations, we, your co-editors, would like to extend to you our last wish for health and happiness. RICHARD WHITE 139-33 86 Ave, Jamaica Business Bowling Club, Ass't to Teachers What a guy! Thirty-nine we 0 elflfl0CI Cl,Cg Ever since it was founded, this country has had a revolutionary impact on the world. Our democracy was born into a world of absolute monarchies. The idea which we made a living reality then spread throughout the world, and the days of the 'cdivine right of kings were brought to an end. VVe have always been a chal- lenge to tyranny of any kind. We are such a challenge today. Our ideals prevailed against the despotism of the nineteenth century. We must help it prevail against new and more terrible dictatorships of the twentieth century. In the battle for men's minds our ideology is stronger, more appealing, more dynamic than any totalitarian force. The world longs for the tolerance and mutual adjustment which is characteristic of democracy. Our desire to promote the growth of freedom in the world has one strict limita- tion. We will not-indeed, we cannot-impose liberal ideas on other nations. Democracy cannot be forced on people. It has to grow out of conviction and ex- perience, it has to be voluntarily tried and accepted. Other ways of life can be imposed by force and terror, but democracy and freedom thrive on knowledge and understanding. The theories of democracy, therefore, stand or fall by their own inherent worth, by their value as an answer to man's needs and desires. This value has to be demon- strated, to be proved by persuasion and example, to be told and explained. If free- dom is to grow, its meaning must be proclaimed to the world. During the second World War the United States government undertook for the first time to present to the rest of the world a full picture of our American democracy, its character, its problems, its purposes, and its achievements. This it attempted by means of documentary films, Voice of American broadcasts, Amer- ican books and periodicals which were distributed to the four corners of the earth. War is a hateful and futile phenomenon. It settles nothing and its consequences make almost as heavy a burden for the conquerors as for the conquered. Democra- cies are essentially pacific. Where people have a voice in establishing policy, where thought is not in chains, and opposition untrammeled, aggression is inconceivable. If the whole world accepted and practised the democratic principles which are ours, there would be an end to wars. Twice in recent years nations have felt the sicken- ing blows of unprovoked aggression. We are determined that this shall not happen again. lf there is anything certain today, if there is anything inevitable in the future, it is the will of the people of the world to make this earth a home where there is free- dom from fear, freedom from want, freedom of religion and freedom from aggres- sion. lt is up to us, the youth who are graduating this year, to keep foremost in our thoughts these ideals and principles, so that we can do our utmost to preserve pence and democracy for posterity. MARII URI li FROG li L .i'l0l'ty f fw cf Y! x :1 f' 14:5 37119 GOQZS g FRESHMAN-THERE'S A LONG, LONG TRAIL A'WINDIN' One dark, chilly morning, we suddenly awoke from our serene elementary school dreams faced with the realization that we were ready for 'fbigger and betterl' things. Thus we embarked upon our expedition into the wilderness, our credentials Celementary school diplomasj tightly clutched in our hot little hands. With antici- pation of a glorious future, we joyously stepped into our canoe, commonly known as the Q1952. It was while wandering through the vast unknown of Highland Avenue that Billy Mack was first struck with his noble ambition to become Police Commissioner. There were, of course, many perils which we were compelled to overcome. One of our greatest obstacles was the ice-covered steps leading up to Jamaica High School. However, Karen Wefer and Ruby Eaton heroically set to work scraping these steps with what was eventually to become their Girls' League pins. Thus they saved the lives of many an aspiring young explorer. A gust of wind nearly blew us off the steps. Glancing backwards, however, we discovered it was not a gust of wind but Mickey Lewis already breaking all speed records trying to 'cbeat the bell. Taking a second look, we noticed Mary Ann Cooper running after him, weighted down with his books.. The Freshman year came to an eventful finish with a huge bonfire at which the Freshmen gleefully burned their handbooks, civics textbooks, and revealing yellow program cards. SOPHOMORE-'ROUND THE BEND Our expedition continued as jules Klajaper assigned Nancy Horin, Lois Gans, and Rita Hlibok the task of exploring the dense jungle, now called the Leaders' Locker Room. Our three pathhnders asked lllargie jacobs to accompany them. In preparation for her later position of Editor-in-Chief of the Hilltopper, she kept an efficient log of their journey. Alike Salamone, in charge of a scouting group, commissioned Dick Hurch to blaze a trail to the tower. Once there, Miss Hughes claimed Dick for her own, and he has been beating the drums ever since. Our eanteens were running dry. Artie Gould, Bill Conlon, Lois Alellen, and junkie Brozen discovered the pool. While hastily jumping in, they came to the rude awakening that the pool was also bone dry, The New York water shortage was felt everywhere. With a year ol freshman experience under their belts, Honest john Korlzen- dorfer and Smiling Artie .S'tez'e11.v set up a trading post. Their largest profit came from selling used elevator passes to the new freshmen. One still night a shrill whistle echoed from the hills. lt was Mr. Sweeney beckoning us to our first year in history. and thus we set forth on our journey into our junior year. Forty-two JUNIOR-BLUE SKIES The smoke signals coming through the door of the boys' room proved to be love letters from Big Chief Irv Vernick to his favorite squaw, Pocahontas Karp. While trying to go up the down stairway, Bops Morelly collided with Roger Rystrand and she has remained that way ever since. As pioneers in their struggle for better things janet Friedman, Tony LaMastro, and Millie Norris were awarded the Red and Blue badge of courage which is now known to mankind as the Arista pin. Since a caller was needed for our Saturday night square dance, Margie Frogel was coached by Miss Konigsberg and started her public speaking career. Ellie Sohwick, joan Moskin, Wally Pazelowski, and Pat Wolkiewie: found this a good time to further their political campaigns by giving away free cider. Varsity gals Marie Sehlaweidt and Helen Hettich taught us all the newest steps. The hour was growing late and the dawn of our Senior Year was approaching as we all set out for home. SENIOR-THE END OF THE RAINBOW hir. Wolff, as chaperon for the senior lap of our journey, greeted us one morning at sunrise with the happy news that senior hats would arrive the following week. Due to Indian raids, Margot Weitz and Maxine Gischner rushed into enroll- ing room ten minutes late. VVhile Anneliese Horst was doing a war dance, Marty Goold donned her war paint and became the best looking squaw in the senior class. The second period bell rang and, as if at a signal for attack, bedlam broke loose in the main hall. While most seniors were around the campfire eating their dinners, the luckless basketball team, headed by AI Pesky, was having its practice. They did, however, get back to the settlement in time for a powwow led by joel Goldstein. He was ably assisted by Celeste Laprn and zllarian Sehatsvr of the cheering squad. Awaken- ing early the next morning we were told by Mr. Geller that Senior dues would be less if we sold more ads for the YEARBOOK. We were haunted from then on with horrid thoughts that some poor seniors were walking the streets day and night trying to sell these same ads. U'Ve were almost sure of this when we saw the sleepy. bedraggled look on the faces of joan. Goodman, Bob Roeding, and Barbara Borten.j As graduation time drew near and anticipation grew high, we all began to worry about Regents. The YEARBOOK and Hilltopprr staffs, however, were more concerned with meeting deadlines. And as we left the school on graduation day the last thing we saw was Rikki Glasser tightly clutching the names and addresses of all the seniors so she could send them the long-awaited YEARBOOK. SMn. a Fifty VVith the coming of Spring the ice will thaw, and form a melting pool, Thus do we enter the changing world, and bid farewell to school, The ice creates falls over which there rise, hopes sincere as psalms, These hopes may be young and soaring high, but they'll reach the water's calm. The forest stream ripples and whispers its dearms, to this a world of old, Not so the youth with his precious dreams, with pride they are joyously told, A serene little pond at the end of a storm, is like youth as he senses life's meaning, His anger calms and peace soon reigns, for the mist of confusion is clearing, The air and the water are perfectly still, as the pond reflects Godls treasures, And the golden rainbow that was hidden before, can give to youth such pleasure, The ice and the rain, the stream and the pond. with their dreams form an ocean of power. Youth shrill drink deeply of future dreams, that will bloom with each day and hour.
