For the encouragement, the advice and assistance rendered us by the various members of the faculty in our endeavors during the past four years at jamaica High School we are most grateful. X'Ve particularly wish to acknowledge our indebtedness to Mrs. Edward C. Chickering, Mr. joseph Lundari and Mr. Morris Perman for their aid, advice and cooperation in the various problems which have confronted us during our high school course. the Senior Advisor to the boys of the gradu- ating class, one of his proudest achievements is his election as Senior Leader of the Arista. XVe are proud to have so worthy an individual as our leader. His qualities of leadership, guidance, consultant and teacher have been a remarkable aid to the senior classy His fairmindedness in all problems has been an inspira- tion. Mere thanks could never compensate for the hard work and sincerity of effort that Mr. Lundari has shown for our wel- fare. We are genuinely grateful, Mr. Lundari. 5 MRS. EDVVARD C. CHICKERING The girls of the senior class con- sider themselves most fortunate in having a person of such admir- able character as their advisor at such an important period of their life. Your example has been an inspiration. Yve shall not forget your excellent guid- ance when our problems were quite complicated. We realize that your advice has been inval- uable. Your method of present- ing your opinions has been almost like a parent in gentle- ness. As a teacher we have acquired a sincere affection for you because of your genuine desire to aid us. The very fact of your activity in the Parent and Teachers Organization displays your sincerity of purpose. All the girls of the senior class wish to express their most earnest thanks. MR. MORRIS PERMAN Mr. Morris Perman in the ca- pacity of Senior Class Advisor has been invaluable to us. He has guided us in the various li- nancial problems, supervised the production of this yearbook and assumed the responsibility for the success of its publication. As well as being untiring in his efforts along literary lines he is an athletic enthusiast and also finds time for recreational activi- ties. The senior class wishes to express its deep gratitude for all this effort on your part so that their graduation shall be a SUCCESS. '45 3

TO THE GRADUATES OF JUNE 1945 Dear Girls and Boys: i One of the easiest things to give is advice. ln my many years as principal, I have preached a good deal and given a great deal ol advice-some good and doubtless some bad, but all with good intentions. Now that you are about to leave, I hope you will bear with me and let me preach lor the last time. lt is a sermon on dependability. Many of you will go into the business world, some to college, and a good many boys into the armed forces. Wlherever you find yourself, you will be under some older person who will rate you on your dependability. An employer con- siders the reliability of his employeesg a banker makes a loan largely on the reputation for dependability of the person seeking the loang an officer picks the man for a special job who can be relied on to do the job well. The history of human achievement is in large part a record of the acts of men who could be depended upon. Fortunately, dependability is a personality trait which can be acquired and no one is too young to develop it. It is a trait which you can't buy, borrow or steal, yet it is something which you can lose easily. I hope in the years to come it may be said of everyone ol you, His word is as good as his bond. Now that I have preached my last sermon to you, let me congratulate you all and wish you the best of luck. Sincerely your friend, CHARLES H. VOSBURGH 1'rim'ipal, jamaica H. S.

DR. FDXVARD C. CHICKERINC Those ol' us who are members of the Class of june 1945 have had only a short four years, during which time we have known Dr. Edward Conner Chickering, but there are thousands of alunmae and alumni of jamaica High School who still talk about the wonders of being in his classes in Latin and Greek. 1Ve can say thousands since, although the hand of time has not made much of an impression upon him, Dr. Chickering has been teaching i11 Jamaica High School for forty-seven yearsg he came here in September 1898. Not only the school was small, but the town of Jamaica as wellg and he has been able to see both grow tremendously. During these many years he has endeared himself to great numbers of people. Dr. Chickering was born on February 19, 1875, in the town of Exeter, New Hampshire. His father was a professor of Speech at Amherst College and later was in charge of the Department of English Language and Litera- ture at the University of Vermont. Probably as a result of this, Dr. Chicker- ing has always been an example of the use of impeccable Fnglish diction and speech and has therefore had such lasting influence upon the English of the students in his Latin and Greek classes. His early education was at the Phillips Exeter Academy from which he was graduated in 1892-and to which school he has already returned for his fiftieth reunion. For his hrst year of college training, Dr. Chickering went to the Univer- sity ol' Vermont: then he transferred to Yale University and received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1896. The following year he studied at Harvard and was awarded the degree of Master of Arts in 1897. 4 3
